    Hank Mobley

I wouldn't call his life wasted. He just didn't take care of himself. But he left a legacy. seems like he got done all he was going to get done. Kenny Kirkland, Hiram Bullock, those lives...I don't know if they had gotten done all they were going to get done or not, but they certainly got stopped while still in peak form. One wonders if they got done everything they had in them to get done. Maybe not. But obviously they got done all they were going to get done. That's a crucial distinction, imo. PC, Hank, even Bird, they got it done in the time they gave themselves. I used to wonder, what if Bird had lived, what if Trane had lived, all that, and finally, yeah, what if, that's really a stupid question, because, simply put, they didn't. So it's a question with no answer. So...think about things that can be done here and now. And if that includes building on Bird, building on Trane, good, do that, think that, and good luck to you. And please do take care of yourself!
  2. Tell you what, there were a lot of reasons to get Squeamish About Sammy, but underneath it all, the guy was an incredible old-school talent with an old-school mentality that you didn't half-ass ANYTHING. The older I get, the more I appreciate that, because...skills matter. And work ethic is a core character quality. Besides, an old Sammy was a thing to behold, singing and dancing and anything else he wanted to do. The guy started literally as a toddler and never stopped. The life experiences he had....whatever directions they took, he owned them all, so...you don't have to "love" him, but i think you gotta respect the hell out of him. There's things to be learned there, real things.
  3. Overall more than a "DUCK!!!" than a "heads-up", but if you're wondering about these type things, then you'll want to at least hear it.
  4. You know the album of Sammy singing with the Buddy Rich band, right? A little goes a long way, but on "Ding Dong, The Witch Is Dead", it does indeed go there. And on "The Birth Of The Blues"...it goes to the other there. Too bad about that. too bad they couldn't/didn't get Oliver Nelson or Gerald Wilson to write the charts. Oh well, they're all dead now, and tis is the decision they made. So be it.
  5. ...and nobody sells anything until they have something to sell.

  7. Cool, thanks. Seems like a good number of the big band broadcasts. i only have the Alamac (The Mighty Alamac) record of that. Not something that clicked right away, if you know what I mean, but I've not written it off yet, either.
  8. Anybody know this stuff?
  9. I'm looking forward to the California version of so-called "Swing To Bop" music, to the extent that it's going to be in there. I think there will be a lot.
  10. The best jazz is sung with Verve, they say. Nothing here contradicts that statement! 50 chicks not over 22. JOE WILLIAMS, you hush that talk!!!!
  11. This Bean label looks interesting... is it? https://www.discogs.com/label/1207826-Bean-2
  12. I still like the implicit festivality of this cover: kinda festivates right along with this one:
  13. What I would like to find ids the print ad that was in National Lampoon, a cigar smoking, fedora wearing cartoon crow with the caption something like i got some new blues for you....something like that,
  14. I should have it in my closet. Can't gt to it right away, but will. Stay tuned.
  15. They kept it loose, they kept things light.
  16. Urbie and Hawk did Wrapped Tight, but other than that...and that's not exactly full of "younger stars"... Barry Harris, maybe, in 1965.
  17. Festive? Maybe. Urbie Green? Definitely. Friends? Afraid not. https://www.discogs.com/release/1351437-Coleman-Hawkins-Reevaluations-The-Impulse-Years On, no parade mode. Never mind.
  18. Bill Shoemaker Wee Willie Keeler Keely Smith
  19. Three's liners in the front sleeve of the one I got. Disc in one, "pamphlet" in the other. You'd miss it if you weren't looking for it, I suspect.
  20. This is certainly one of the more interesting records I've heard from a "young player" in quite a while. The liner notes are a straight-up church tract! And the music flows, endlessly. Humble, but not meek. Quiet, but not insubstantial. Strong, but not overbearing or egotistical. If this one's not yet on your radar, perhaps it should be?
  21. There's a Shirley Horn record in there also, an interesting one.
  22. Surrender my ass - I'm playing this once and then moving it on to the next phase of it's life, Hopefully somebody out there wants to hear these songs more than I do.

    Joe Chambers

I bought that record last year-ish. It's really pretty good!
  24. You are indeed wrong about that! https://www.discogs.com/release/5783030-Dizzy-Gillespie-The-Verve-Philips-Dizzy-Gillespie-Small-Group-Sessions Album index: Norgran MGN 1050 Diz And Getz Norgran MGN 1083 Dizzy Gillespie And His Orchestra Verve MGV-8141 Diz And Getz Verve MGV-8173 Jazz Recital Verve VS-68313 Have Trumpet, Will Excite Verve VS-68328 The Ebullient Mr. Gillespie Verve MGV-8352 The Greatest Trumpet Of Them All Verve MGV8386 A Portrait Of Duke Ellington Verve VS-68401 An Electrifying Evening With Philips PHS600-048 Dizzy On The French Riviera Philips PHS600-070 New Wave! Producer's note: This set contains all of the recorded music from Dizzy's working bands from 1954 to 1964 during his years with Verve and Philips. Concurrently, he toured and recorded with his own big band, with Jazz At The Philharmonic and went into the studio with various all-star configurations with such guests as Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, Sonny Stitt, Stuff Smith and Roy Eldridge among others. The big band and all-star sessions have been well represented during the CD, but his working bands have not. We hope this set makes up for that grievous neglect.
