  3. an intriguing combination of ingredients:
  4. I've played 3-4 times. I like it (and word games in general), but never seem to have a window for it. I underestimate that it's just been bought by the NYT!

  6. Kid Conflickt - Momma Sang Pop, Daddy Drank Beer
  7. Oh well then, let me dig around and find that old down beat stuff. Big was "famous" for having BIG big bands, and I think that McIntosh was "famous" for writing for BIG instrumentations. I think that Vig even had an album on Milestone?
  8. First time listening in a few decades, and I like it as much now as ever, albeit for probably completely different reasons. Bruce Johnstone came to play. Hell, the whole band came to play. When people come to play, hell, that's all you can ask of them. How they do, that's their business. They're not gaming you, so enjoy the honest humanity in that
  9. Kenton came to use that "Flying V" formation, so playing in sax section would not have had brass behind you, except for when there were mellophoniums.
  10. Usually just the opposite for me, when I get into the music, I get into it as an enhancement to whatever else I'm doing. But one time somebody gave me a live bootleg cassette of Joe Henderson doing a longass "Invitation" and Joe was IN THE ZONE, just playing onandonandon, and when Joe got into that zone, I was always more than happy to follow him in. And this was a DEEEEEEEEP zone he was in. Next thing I know, I had missed my exit to get to the crib and was, like, 20 miles and 3 exits north. I didn't mind, because, hell, that's a DAMN good bootleg, and I did get home with the tape.
  11. That would make a really solid 3-on-2 Blue Note CD collection, if they (ever) did something like that.
  12. Horace Ott, man at work.

  18. Ladd McIntosh and Tommy Vig, did they collaborate at the time?
  19. Where do I know the name Ladd McIntosh? Early 70s, down beat? Lab-type band or something, like, massive instrumentation?
  20. Hugh Masakela also, now that I think about it
  21. But his first hits, the ones that actually had some punch, were on Bang! And then he was on Uni, which...who remembers Uni #strawberryWHAT?!???
  22. In real (before your) time, that guy was one of the more extreme crash and burn right before your very eyes pop artists of his day, even more than Elvis. At least Elvis half-ass tried to right some of his wrongs...
  23. Hell, that's pretty much all of them!
  24. Bill Barron!
