  1. Frank Nub and The Nubz - The Natural Nubz Some consider this record to be the prototype for MTV Unplugged. I say who cares?
  2. The virus is rude. Needs to learn some manners.
  3. That would be a deal breaker for me, if I was going to be interested in the first place.
  4. Who are these horn players?
  5. It's not a problem, it's a question, but as it turns out, one I'm asking due to my faulty memory/reflex placing that note in an incorrect harmonic context. It IS a tenor Bb, but it's serving as a 4th in Eb (concert), not a minor third. It's at 1:17 in the usual clip. My style was always to use that note as either a flatted 3rd or a flatted 7th, but obviously Ben Webster speaks that vernacular far more fluently than I could ever imagine doing myself. So yes - my note is correct, your key is correct, and Ben, as always, is beyond reproach. And the question of how to do it to a tenor Ab is moot, because the answer is, you don't! Too bad he got followed up by Pres, with one of the most transcendent 12 bars of the 20th Century.
  6. I prefer the Dexter Gordon version. No lyrical conundrums. The only conundrum is, like, how far behind one beat can you play before it becomes on top of the NEXT one? Otherwise, the opening line loses me, "have yourself a merry little Christmas", yuck, cute, I almost always HATE cute, and this one is no exception, so, really, no preference.
  7. You overcome it the same way you do any virus - by "starving" it of places to live, replicate, and mutate. That's not particularly hard. What seems to be hard is getting a general population to understand that that's the only thing that really works.
  8. Yeah, I saw that one. And I don't give a damn about the "real" key nearly as much as I do finding out how to do the same thing to a tenor Ab as I can do to a tenor Bb. Can you help with that?
  9. Try ripping it and then burning it. see if the issue persists on the burn. I know, sounds crazy, but....
  10. People wonder why people are buying catalogs with no intention of ever releasing records. Well...
  11. This is a good record.
  12. Yes, as stated repeatedly. That shake is done on a tenor Bb, which in the key of Tenor G is the "blue note" flatted third. And it's not a trill, it's a shake. Tenor players all over the world do it as Ben does here. Dexter was also well known for it. You finger an A in the left hand, put all three fingers down in the right, use the right hand Eb key, and then work your jaw and throat to shake the sit out of it. For that matter, Phil Woods used it a lot on alto, and there's a few YouTube videos about how to do it. They didn't have YouTube when I was learning, so I had to go to the old guys to show me how it worked. Not all of them were willing, btw! If the actual key of this particular performance is concert Eb, that's tenor F, and the blue note/flatted third is an Ab. I've learned a lot of way to make different notes do different things, but a shake like that on an Ab is not one of them. Nor have I really noticed any other saxophone player doing it on an Ab. Not saying it can't be done, just saying that I don't know how to do it. That's why I'm asking you for a fingering, if you have one. Billie's OG key was F. Maybe she dropped it a whole step as she aged. But that's not my concern. Figuring how to shake an Ab the same way you do a Bb is.
  13. So how does Ben do that shake on a tenor Ab? Give me a fingering for that, please. I can do it on a tenor Bb all day long. But on an Ab?

  16. That Billy Childs thing seems a cut above the others here.
  17. Anybody can carry the damn thing.
  18. The Chambers Brothers The Lennon Sisters The King Family
  19. Does this get it? "Star Time" from The Nubians Of Plutonia. If you suint just a little, you can hear Tadd Dameron like a mo here.
  20. I used to think that until I started paying attention to Roy McCurdy...that's how that shit goes.
  21. Pediatric ICU is nothing to laugh about, though. A friend of my grandaughter spent two weeks in one/. That sucked for all involved. Fortunately my granddaughter was nearly asymptomatic, as were the other kids at the preschool. But that's one of those things where you don't know until you get there, and who wants to get there to find out? 26.5 %, only 1 in 4, but whose kid is going to be that one? Whose kid needs to be that 1? I'm not really crazy about the vaccinate all the babies thing, but neither am I thinking that kids can't get it, and if they do, hey, big deal. Statistics are one thing, specific realities quite another. In everything, a risk. All I know for sure is that per her parents, my granddaughter gets a shot for her 5th birthday present. Well, not just a shot, THAT'S not anyway to treat a kid on their birthday. Extra ice cream afterwards, on granddad!
  22. It's F, unless you know a way to get a tenor Ab to do that shake the way Ben does, in which case, please share! Otherwise, that's a tenor Bb (or a tenor A if you really want to get unmentionaably personal with the horn). Anyway, I daresay that added all together, I've probably played more blues in E than in F. Blues bands tend to guitar keys, jazz bands don't. Each has its unique flavor, as befits the musics.
