  1. Wasn't sure if it was the most recent or not...I'd heard a lot of chatter about a 4 LP version and stuff, so I guess this is the CD iteration of that. Good! I've been going back and forth with both versions all day, and think that the "alternate version" pulls me in harder and deeper than the original. But that could change if I play it in the car a lot, like I said, I'm playing on as close to a digital equivalent of a car radio as I have, not by choice, it's just what fits on the table and keeps the sound out of the rest of the house while i work. Not complaining, mind you, it's not unlike the night porter gig at Burger King and having the overnight jazz FM radio on in the kitchen while I scrubbed the toilets...I could have used this record then, actually! And right now, I hear an ingredient - clearer, oomphier tympani!
  2. I guess I've got the latest iteration? A 2-CD set from Strut Art Yard? I'm finding that I like the "alternate version" best, got more...and less... ok, it's just a funkier mix. Of course, I'm listening on the worst possible combination of listening ingredients I have, but part of me says that that proves my point?
  3. Dunlop, although Riley gives a better showing live than studio. Old Socks New Shoes or New Socks Old Shoes?
  4. Yeah, I bought it, got it, but won't be opening it for a while. Too much stuff in front of it in line. But I fully expect to have slobberlove for it when the time comes, I mean, I had that with the original 2 LP, and then the 3 CD, and my slobberglands work better now than ever. If nothing els, buy it just so the fuckers realize that there's still a market for CDs. Can't let them get the notion that all they have to do is put out out boutique items for people who probably don't even know what to do when their record gets scratched or stuff like that.
  5. Alos, think of it as the missing link between Lee Morgan & Music Inc. or vice-versa.
  6. Am I wrong in thinking that there's also some silent footage? Or is that someplace else?
  7. Lee Allen?!?!?!?! I LOVE Lee Allen!
  8. You should have heard of Donald Garrett by now! but if not, you have now! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Garrett
  9. Which is odd, because the rest of that series is either full albums or compilations of the artist in question, not edited...except for one take of "Carson City Stage" on a Mulligan/Baker comp that...I don't know where that came from. But they kept at it with te samplers up until the very end! and doubling down on the editing!
  10. In Hollywood, anybody can play anything. It's the magical magic of magicistity!!!!!
  11. Pacific Jazz was Libty by then, but Richard Bock was still involved. I'm thinking that Pacific Jazz put out more samplers than any other "jazz label", so, these were just more of the same, and they are all reissues, so technically... That new Volume 2 is pretty good actually. It has a lot of stuff that even now is overlooked. I guess the question now is if the OG Vol. 2 also had any alternate takes?
  12. They did a Volume 2...which was also nothing like the OG:
  13. Yeah, Scott Hamilton keeps trying to evolve his voice. Those other guys seem to be more about refining it. Different game.
  14. The 1968 reissue of that sampler dropped some of those cuts! Maybe all of them?!?!?! The PJ JAZZ MILESTONES series was all reissued material (except for the Wes thing where they added strings?), but this has to be a first, reissuing a record with none of the original cuts on it!!!!!
  15. also not mixed particularly well, iirc?
  16. I would rule nothing out...Bacharach did a conduction gig here a few decades ago, and the guy who played the trumpet solos ton the ballads old me that Bacharach was rather...intense about how he wanted them to be played...the best I can remember was that he said he wanted them to be"...wispy, like smoke, like....HERB ALPERT". Now, I don't think that Alpert plays on the Dionne sides, I think those were all East Coast dates, but since you're talking about did Alpert get a few spots on records on his own label...I would not try to dissuade you from that notion, not at all. It seems pretty synergetic, actually.
  17. Depends on the band. Plush Toys or Lush Life?
  18. Among other thigs, it can be a CTI record for people who hate CTI records! Of all the Ra records where listening to the inside of the music takes you deeper to the point than does just staying on the surface, this one makes it easier than most. Then again, that's true of most all music, the surface is where they get your attention, the inside is where they keep it...to do what it will...
  19. It kinda seemed to me at the time that he was being "groomed" by Blue Note, he started getting meaningful sideman dates in kind of a "Joe Henderson" role. Gotta wonder what might have come from that if the label had not have gone where it did. Of course, once he got the gig with Herbie... But to your point, yeah, Bennie Maupin!
  20. They have prosthetics!
  21. Which Carl Perkins?
  22. Is that the tour that Ernie Watts did? Did he do the club date too?
  23. They did "Neighbors" &"Waiting On A Friend"? Who covered for Sonny? Bobby Keyes?
