  1. 1st Joe Castro box set. Not a lot of "new" players (although I had a limited exposure to Castro himself), but just a delightful collection of players and circumstances that happened around his axis. the New Music String Quartet box (if that was 2020... I hate to say this, but....I don't know what all I heard for the first time in 2020, or what was in 2019 or 2018...it's all kind of blurring together right now...hope that's normal?
  2. No idea what that means, but is sounds awful! And probably is!
  3. I'd imagine that there are far worse fates in live than being tucked in at night by Dr.Jill Biden!
  4. Patricia Travers had an endorsement deal!

    Billy Hart Corner

Enchance. I got it wrong then, I get it wrong still. But either way it's a great record. I hope it made the 70s blog.

Enhance is still a classic. One of the stronger debut leader albu ms.
  7. Well, if it's a declared war, there's an American model for how to manage a declared-war economy. And there's also models aplenty how to manage non-declared war economy. What there's not too many American models for is actually/truly declaring a war and then not really fighting it. so is this going to be a war or what? Seems like it needs to be, we're getting attacked like it is...
  8. That exponential curve thing is a bitch. Anybody who was expecting otherwise is/was an idiot. Anybody.
  9. did the Disc catalog all go over into Folkways? Because if so, then the Cage stuff would now be with the Smithsonian?
  10. I am getting all up in that box this week. Ordered it during the summer(?), getting to it now. Ok my...one copy of THIS one for $550.00 I see lots of different types of music on Disc, but only these two are "classical". And both involve Cage + Ajemian. Ajemian did the OG Sonatas and Interludes on Dial, which is still my favorite. so...I want to hear these Disc records...somehow. Surely they're alive somewhere.
  11. that ThadMel Resonance thing was from him, correct? But didn't he release it first on his own, like as a bootleg as far as paying the parties goes? If true, that seemed kinda shady to me, like he should have known better. Then again, lots of people should know better, right?
  12. I'm looking for some kind - ANY kind - of a reissue of this thing. Anybody no of one, of ANY kind? It's got Maro Ajemian!
  13. Do you have the CD that's all Ives playing solo piano? Columbia released excerpts from it, but somebody put out a buttload of it. It's crazy, almost Cecil-ish in it's velocity, if not in it's precision. Very, VERY "splash-y". Well worth searching out! I had no idea that the guy lived to 1954, no idea at all.
  14. It's a "degree of separation" thing. Moses Asch released the very first JATP record, and then made a record of John Cage music on his Disc label. So, like straight line from Jacquet to Asch to Cage. I think it's delightfully hilarious!
  15. Well, Peter Asher struck gold, of course. But not until in the 70s, and at this point, who cares. But i will try to find time in 2021 to revisit that Cabbages & Kings thing. I remember being happily engaged the last time i listened to it, whenever that was.
  16. that would be marking the hall, not hallmarking!
  17. when you care enough to send the very best
  18. More music from the last century. But the line about "recorded under the supervision of the composer" takes me aback...I did not realize that Ives lived until 1954...I wonder if he ever heard Bird?
  19. I wish I could remember who was them and who was Peter & Gordon...I do agree with Felser tht their later work was worthy of interest. so what did Peter & Gordon do again? Lady Godiva? I don't know.
  20. I don't readily find a reissue of this? So...Ross Russell and Moses Asch both recording John Cage...do tell....
  21. I guess it bears reiteration that Chatahoochie Red was leased to Columbia by Max, as part of an agreement with the label he made with Bruce Lundvall. It was not and is not owned by Columbia, so any reissue would have to be initiated by the owner, which I would assume to be the estate.
  22. Real-time reminiscence here....there are no bad Max records. And I did like Pictures in a Frame. I had seen Max w/Odean in Newport/New York (at Carnegie) that summer and was not in the least bit let down that Billy was not in the band (and besides, I heard Billy with his own band that weekend doing an afternoon street concert). But...(you knew there was a but, coming, right?) compared to Loadstar and maybe In Tokyo (the only two I had heard by that band at that time, but whoa, WHOA). Pictures In A Frame seemed a bit of an "airplay" record, relatively speaking. Shorter cuts, a tighter presentation, etc. Nothing wrong with that, but at that time (and based on what I had heard from the band live), it just seemed a bit of a calculated presentation as opposed to a fully all-in one. And of course, it got no airplay, at least not here anyway. So, "real time" experiences are not just with the records, they're also having to do with live gigs, radio dials, all sorts of things. And of course, they're not replicable. Like the man (almost) said, when they're gone, they're gone.
  23. What indications do you have that Joe worked a lot as a leader in the 60s?
  24. Who is that alto player? Richie Cole's kid brother?
