Paul Bley had the musical temperament, but probably not the social one. But yeah, Paul Bley was ahead of most people, including Bill Evans, imo. But I guess Paul Bley was a quirky kind of guy! George Russell was not much of a pianist, btw, not in terms of working-musician type pianist. He knew it, but he wanted a working band, so he did it. I mean, Evans was predisposed that way, sure. And he was definitely rightguyrightplacerighttime for a few years. But without Russell....Everybody Would Still Dig Bill Evans, just not sure that it would have been the SAME Bill Evans. It might have been Yusef Lateef!

Evans worked a LOT with George Russell before joining Miles, starting in 1956(!). Evans was open to it, to be sure. but Russell the theoretician and "thinker" was really, really exerting a "pull" in those days, far beyond what he relatively meager recorded output would suggest. Again, Evans was open to it, temperamentally inclined, even, but I really don't think you have that Bill Evans without George Russell's shaping. The whole "modal" thing, Russell more or less put that bug in everybody's ear who had an ear to have it put in. And Miles knew Russell form the Birth Of The Cool Days. Not that Evans wasn't a supremely inspired vessel (at that time, anyway), but no George Russell, no KOB, that's a safe bet. No Bill Evans,, something else happens around "modality", just not KOB. It was going to happen, it was just a matter of how. In fact, given Miles' previous peeks into scalar-based improvisational structures, you might be able to say that Bill Evans was Miles' practical way to get George Russell without having to actually use/deal with George Russell - if he even could, which would not in any way be a given. That would be a very Miles-ian thing to do!

COVID-19 III: No Politics For Thee

Yeah, probably best to put all that on hold for a while, pool or no pool...no need to be friends with somebody who don't/won't give a damn about your personal safety. I mean, for real, this is not the time for "misunderstandings", especially ones htat result in hostile actions, be it throwing coffee or intentionally coughing/sneezing/whatever. I thought I was a misanthropic son of a bitch, but LORD have mercy, that kind of shit is just evil spirits at play. -
Alex Cintron 100% knew what he was doing. It's not like he grew up in Iceland or someplace and got pranked by his teammates while still learning the ways of the world.

If this was at a friend's house, was the friend not aware that workers were coming? Did said friend not set expectations with the landscaping company that sent the workers? There should not have been any surprises here. -
George Russell extended the lifespan of the jazz imagination by several generations. BIll Evans gave several generations an excuse. Big difference.

That's when you go fullfrontal hardcore on their sorry asses. They came into your space and did not respect it. Not only did they not respect it, the deliberately provocitated an a t of aggression. I would also go after the property owner and question her command of the situation as well. Friend or no friend, she needs to set the rules for her property and her geusts should know what to expect. This "personal responsibility" thing...I don't think that Americans (and I only speak of them because they are all I know), have been inculcated with that notion in even the slightest degree. If something needs done, we look to somebody else to do it for us. If it goes wrong, we blame them. If we are doing something for somebody else and it goes wrong, we blame the plan, like, hey, I;m just doing what I was told. This is very much a time where we all need to take responsibility - personal responsibility - for damn near every aspect of our behaviors, up to and including knowing what we are going to do to avoid the actions of others. You gotta be militant about this shit, not raggedly aggressive towards others, but militant about yourself. -

Exactly. People went and got their own jelly beans. -
Video is cued to begin with "Caldonia" but just for the first click. It's a pretty good show all the way through, though. Before that...who's the tap dancer who comes in at 39:04?

My answer then is "I think you might be bullshitting me to keep them all for yourself, but those aren't the only jellybeans in the world, I'll get my own, thank you. Bon apetit, bon chance, and au revoir". I mean, engagement with bullshit is only occasionally not an option. -

No, it should be #how much cyanide, and how do you know it's just 2?". People are too quick to stop asking questions. -

Or, you know, keep your safe distance, give your look, know who the idiot is, and just walk on by. Just keep walking the fuck on by. That shouldn't be too difficult to do for any self-disciplined adult. -

Or as it pertains to this incident, you're walking down the street and you see some crazyass MAGAnites out in their front yard having a cup of coffee with their arsenal by their side. Anybody with common sense would at the very least start walking on the other side of the road, if not walk over to another street altogether. But no, you not only keep walking your route, you stop to tell the MAGAnites what idiots they are. You're right, of course, but you already know that, and you already know that they don't give a damn what you think. And yet you do it anyway. You're a dumbass, then. And they are still idiots. So, uh, yeah, voluntarily compounding the insanity, thanks for leaving it worse than when you found it. Sorry, no sympathy here, for anybody involved. Herd needs to be thinned on all sides. Uh, maybe try either not going out so much, or being more selective about where you go out, or maybe even, god forbid, pay attention to what's going on where you are? Maybe, don't depend on everybody having good sense and giving a fuck about other people? Becuase, you know, what's any different about people now than they ever have been? Ass holes gonna ass hole, right? If I expect an asshole to suddenly be concerned about my personal safety, then...that's on me for indulging in magical thinking. -

I don't understand why it's so hard to just, like, look ahead, know where you don't want to be, and then make sure you don't be there. -
He's hardly alone in that regard, although Wide Hive has also been doing good work with him the last few years. He's a very prolific recording artist. There's been plenty to absorb for the last several decades, you just have to want to know about it and then want to get it. A lot of it has not been that hard to find, really. Some things, like that trio record, yeah. But a lot of it is/was available on Amazon or Dusty Groove, while it's in print, anyway. And that's the trick - get it while it's in print, carpe diem.
-
Wide Hive has been good about getting recent-ish Roscoemusic out, as has Nessa. There's a good selection to be had, and fine music to boot. People who want to "catch up", those labels are both good, readily available starting points.
-
WideHive & Delmark are American, and y'all not paying attention... Nessa, 2017: Nessa, 2018 and totally epic:
-
Chuck can sell you this 2015 gem, and you'd be sorely misguided to not let him: I actually (truth again) bought 3 copies and gave two as Christmas gifts to the member of the trio I had at the time. Very warmly received!
