  1. Yesterday's Johnny Lyttle selection is most worthy for including People & Love, a great record that I had totally slept on until The Magnificent Goldberg advocated for it here a while back. Marvin Cabell!!!!

    Percy France

As a passenger or as a pedestrian? Serious question.
  3. Did you guys get Alamac over there?
  4. I've heard it, can't yet say that I "know" it. Yet.
  5. Hot House Flowers - never mind Wynton, listen to Bob Freedman!!!!
  6. The first set (white covers/busts) were indeed that. The second (purple covers/busts) not so much. And the ones after that were solid, full LPs. Regardless of that, hey: If there's a better < 15 minute 12" LP side in jazz (in English OR Spanish), I've yet to hear it!

Ah, that motor is in the middle of the record on top, I see. Another variable added...this equation is getting polynomial and may well become quadratic. At least there's a formula for that!
  8. The Spotlite Bird/Dial LPs were all rebundled into a super super deluxe Warner Brothers box set, in anticipation of a Charlie Parker biopic starring Richard Pryor that never got off the ground. One of those things where you had to carpe diem in a BIG hurry. Fortunately, I had a good paying summer job and a connection at a good record store, so I was able to. Some of the material was put out on Roulette, in the Echoes Of an Era series, but god only knows the provenance of that...however, there was one side of one of the LPs that was just four ballads in a row, and that still makes for one of the most satisfying listening experiences I know. There was also at least one Charlie Parker Records LP of Bird/Dial, which one would hope would have been of legit sourcing. But it was kinda reverbed up to no real good end. The Spotlite LPs, though were unsurpassed in terms of annotation, and equaled only by the WB box in terms of completeness (which makes sense, because the WB box WAS the Spotlite LPs).

Kevin - if it were the motor mounts, wouldn't the effect be constant, both from record to record, and within the record itself? Or are there other factors to consider?

Yeah, I would think that if the rumble was strictly coming from the device itself that there would be a consistency of symptom. What you're describing introduces another variable that seems to involve the record itself, to one degree or another, either directly, or as part of a chain of variables. With this in play, "blaming" just the turntable itself does not seem to be the way to go. Kevin's initial advice about isolating the variable is sound (no pun intended), now take it to the next level. Solve for X, baby!
  11. I like Spotify, but my habits are not such that I always have access to it when the need for casual background music or random sampling of product strikes. Besides, Arditti is not something I would consider engaging with as casual background music or random sampling anyway.
  12. I tried to buy this...will know by this time tomorrow whether or not I actually did...

But when you drop the needle on to start the record, does it begin right there? What is your tracking force? And does it happen to the same degree on every record, regardless of condition? Vinyl is indeed a delightful playground, but playgrounds are not designed for perfection, if you know what I mean.

Is the rumble only audible when the tonearm is actually on the record? Seems like a stupid question, but it's not.
  15. I'd like for somebody to do something, for sure. A lot of the things I look for appear to be a little (or more) pricey...
  16. Those Arditti folks can keep a listener busy...
  17. Strings are never a problem. Bad and/or hackneyed writing for them is.
  18. So what kind of charts is he likely to write? I hope more like Robert Freedman did for Wynton. That was great writing. Hope springs eternal.
  19. Who is Dave Rivello?
  20. Can we get a roundup of any/all other recordings that present Nichols compositions not recorded by him, either individual pieces or as an album concept? Didn't Roswell Rudd do two for Cadence? Are there others?
  21. Maybe George Butler sold the tapes to Columbia and then they dubbed Wayne out and made it a Percy Faith record instead. Maybe that's what happened to a lot of people and a lot of things. This music business thing, I imagine that it's not without its mysteries and Irs intrigues.
  22. Don't ask me how I got here, but hey, Percy faith rockin' the rhodes?!?!?!?!? AND the Mangione?!?!?!?!?!?
  23. Something like this?
  24. I heard the Wayne session described one time (perhaps by Cuscuna?) as a "funk" record. WTF do you suppose that meant?
