    Ric Ocasek, RIP

It's funny. I remember the band, I remember there being hits and videos, I remember liking them well enough, and I definitely remember the album covers and Ocasek marrying that gorgeous model (and staying married to her, hooray!). But I can't remember one bit of the actual music (not one!!!!), nor am I particularly curious to do so, seems to be enough to know that it happened then. Weird. Pop culture works in mysterious ways
  2. Wow. So he was asked to play as far away as possible from something that he didn't know where it was. And then he did not find what he was not looking for, two negatives cancel each other out and become a positive, which he then blames on critics rather than process, but he's happy enough to be able to complain that he has a name for it at the ready. I am amused, entertained, and enlightened without once hearing the music, and in fact feel that hearing it would be besides the point now that the meaning has all been extracted from the experience. Highly conceptual! My kudos to all involved, not the least of which is the data conveyor (you), without whom none of this would have been possible.
  3. I'll be happy when they'll sell me a HD DL on a per-transaction, non-subscription basis. My desire for such a product is occasional, and does not justify an ongoing subscription expense.

  5. On the early ones, it was because they were actually playing along with Jamey himself. So...think like Jamey if you want a love connection. I heard stories that on the Woody Shaw play-along, they were actually playing along with Woody himself. Never seen that confirmed, though, and even if true, no indication that Wood was being recorded while playing. But that's one of the better Aebersolds to play along to, imo.
  6. I'd think he would already know the changes to that one, so why did Mike Taylor refuse/wouldn't give him the changes? Why not just call the tune and then tell him to play as far away etc...which, btw seems to me to be a different directive than to avoid the changes altogether?

  8. Well..."as far away as possible" is (mathematically) a trtione, and I know you know how logical all that ends up being, right? But now I gotta ask - how would the dude know what to play as far away as possible from if he didn't have the changes to begin with? As far away as possible from what?
  9. I'm realizing lately that music for me is not a "thing" (although it certainly is that) to enjoy as an "identifier"as it is a method of personal communication (no matter what the message is). To that end, if I'm not hearing music "say" anything to me that draws me in at that level, it pisses me off, actually. Like, here I give you the time to tell me something I either don't know at all or already know but enjoy the way you tell it and...all you got for me is THIS? And yeah, it kind of pisses me off. I realize that might sound arrogant on my part, but the more musics I listen to that come from other places than a "jazz narrative", the more I realize that I don't have to spend my time listening to blahblah music just because it's "supposed" to be something I should like because it and I are of the same "type". If there's a cord to be cut, there it is, that one. And to counter that possible arrogance, all I can say is that if confronting all the great music that has emanated from all people of Earth, regardless of time and place, is not an at times cripplingly humbling experience, then....that's a problem. But not as much a problem as being expected to be down with the blahblah.

He looked dead while he was alive, so congrats for lasting so long!
  11. Nor me. It needs one more chug in order to be effective.
  12. The Gumbo Kings are a good band in the "neo-New Orleans" bag. Last time I heard them, they were fun. But Shelley is the guy you don't want to miss if you can keep from it. That's the real deal right there.
  13. Let's leave Vanna White out of this, ok? She's done no wrong.
  14. either I need to work on my German or you on your English...
  15. Seems pretty labor-intensive!
  16. Still, all roads lead to LeRoy Neiman. otoh, your process is perhaps a little Cage-ian, so maybe you're becoming a mix of Cage and Neiman...Warhol, maybe? Care to design a Johnny Griffin album cover?
  17. Our current culture seems to want there to be things without there being stuff. Good luck on that one.
  18. Well of course they do. There are no notes or combinations of notes that don't go together, there's only contexts that make them seem like they don't (or do). And even then, the meaningfulness of the contexts mean nothing apart from one's perceptions of them. Try watching a NASCAR race and a WNBA game superimposed on top of each other, and then tell me if you do or do not feel like LeRoy Neiman, at least a little bit.
  19. Seems to be a regular catalog item, just with a theme of DJs who play Dr. Taylor's many fine jazz records on their jazz radio jazz shows.
  20. Percy France looks like he had really skinny legs, Happy Birthday!
