aka Language (instrumental, as well as vocal)! All praises to Danny Barker.

Did Donald Byrd ever dance with Pepper Adams? Can that be proven one way or the other?

I can't deal with my wife's iPhone, everything about the muscle memory involved is totally counter-intuitive to me. She hands it to me to do something and I'm like, ok, where do you want me to go and how the hell do I get there from here? Don't have that issue with Androids. Same thing with computers, PCs make sense to me, stuff works the way I expect it to, very linear and "logical", Macs are, like, ok, if I was going to assume a bunch of stuff that I don't already know, where is everything going to be, what leaf am I supposed to look under, and hell, god only knows. I ain't got time for all that.. Different strokes for different types of brain wrings, I'm convinced. If you can make it do what you want it to do, use it, whatever it is..

Johnny Griffin & Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis - Ow! Live At The Penthouse
JSngry replied to mjzee's topic in New Releases
I have a copy of some material from this band at this place in this year, but the data gives the date as October 11. Wondering if that data is incorrect, or if these are different broadcasts. Either way, that's rule #1 of having stuff like this - if you get it for free and really like it, you are morally obligated to buy it if and when it is legitimately released. And I really like it. -
No Jimmy Buffington collection complete without it! (plus, it's a excellent performance equally well recorded, briskly "American" in a good way)

This. Also, my exposure to departmental budgets has always been that you spent every penny you have been given because "savings" are a signal that they gave you too much this year and you're letting them know that you don't need that much next year.

Selections from Don Gabor's earlier Continental label.

No, they didn't save any money. They spent it elsewhere. But it definitely got spent, not saved.

No, it's not only ever leveled at white men. It's leveled at "white culture" in general, male and female alike. And if you ever want to stop the idiocy, I think you have to begin by acknowledging the point that the world (and as much of the world as has been available) economy of the last several centuries has indeed been structured in a way that benefits (and to sustain that benefit) "white people" first, sometimes intentionally, sometimes inadvertently, but still, always.. After that, there's more than plenty room for nuances (for starters, the role of not just race but gender, and the role of "divide and conquer" in terms of intra-racial as well as inter-racial power dynamics), but the longer this basic point elicits defensiveness instead of acknowledgement...that's just going to make the "conversation" louder and stupider. All that is shifting, inevitably, McLuhan's "global village" no longer just an idea, but a hard reality. Stridency and idiocy in response to the change (either by those wishing to prevent it or those wanting to hurry it along, in both cases little more than a mob-mentality screaming MAKE IT STOP) might be inevitable, but to invest in that conversation rather than one looking at what will come next, be it in 5, 50, or 500 years seems to me the more entertaining and healthy route. Plenty of good seats left!!!! -
Wild Bill with Floyd Smith and Chris Columbo (Epic 10") 1954(?). Nice, very nice. It's got the arrangement of "April In Paris" that Davis used to make the big band chart for Basie. Even without that, nice.

American Recording Society 10", Dean Dixon.. McCarthyism in full blow...and that wonderfully boxy pre-HiFi sound. Not an amazing peice of music, but there's more to experiencing a record like this than just the music, or can be....

Lots of pluses with Laswell overall, and at least as many minuses. This is one of the bigger pluses, imo, all the way right.

Highly recommended.

The face of a jazz label which kept the company alive.
JSngry replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I think this was after Smith left BN and had taken up at Verve (where he started of with a BIG bang), but before Sidewinder. 62-65, roughly. Not my claim, though. IIRC, somebody (Dan?) brought it up here a few years ago. I was a little surprised, but it would make sense. -
I think he's kidding himself that those are raindrops. Jimmy Jones' charts are great - for a Nancy Wilson record. Mel Torme is in so many ways NOT Nancy Wilson, none of them particularly to Mel Torme's advantage.

Somebody here said that Gene Harris 3 Sounds were carrying BN for a while at one point. -

Prestige...King Pleasure, Annie Ross...they had hits early on, Prestige did. And Gene Ammons, always popular! For BN B4 NoRa, what was that group, US3? Cantaloopin' (On A Sunday Afternoon?) Wow, she was banking BN even before her first record came out?!?!?!?! -

Yeah, well, idiots can attach themselves to any cause. Idiots gonna idiot, period. -
Helluva good run, a life definitely not wasted. RIP, and thank you.

Yeah, in my mind, the focus of this thread is by definition what vinyl are you spinning now, the medium being the focus, not the content. Now is a very good time (in these parts, anyway) to find all kinds of worthwhile classical music on older LPs for $3-6 dollars a pop. I've been getting a good number of deals like that lately. And I do like the "idea" of the vinyl listening thread sorta looking like an old record store, where records of all types of music (and spoken word, and sound effects, and anything else) show up for anybody to look at. Just walk around the store and see all kinds of things and wonder hmmm....wonder what that's like? And then somebody knows, or they play it in the store, and there you go (and occasionally, you succumb to your curiosity and buy it yourself!), questions and answers, all centered around records, one thing leads to another.

It's a cheap thought, to be sure! Just sayin', I hear "SJW" (or it's full word equivalent") in today's "conversations" and to me it sounds just like "hippie" did back ca. 1972, or "redneck" ca. anytime, Just a way to compartmentalize and avoid.
