    R.I.P. Tom Lehrer

Very little comedy stays popular forever. I remember when this guy was HUGE. Now, it's mostly just old folks who remember hi. I do, and fondly. RIP
  2. These Middle Quartets are...expansive!
  3. Brass is Metal: THIS should be covered by a Metal band.
  4. Thanks! Pretty obscure movie, but I saw it on TV one time, a weekday afternoon movie on a local station, back when they did that type of thing. And of course, there is no YouTube evidence of it, not that I can find anyway. What an odd mixture of talent:
  5. Interesting packaging here - all but Op. 95 were carried over from the sessions used to make the 2LP Epic Rasumovsky/Harp set from 1964-65. But once the decision was made for the band to do a complete cycle, the recorded Op 95 in 1970, after which there was now a 3 LP set. But the timing didn't work out of everything to be "in order". Now, on CD, they are. The Epic recordings were awesome. And so is this Columbia artwork!
  6. I had never really noticed how much whimsy, even mischief there is in the Op. 18 quartets. Maybe it's me that's been listening too seriously? Maybe it's these interpretations? No matter, it's not like it's nonstop comedy, it's just that there's enough sideways shit in there that sometimes I think I can hear smirkage going on while the ink was being put to the page. Otherwise, the lucidity of the playing here has me wondering what kind of a...psychedelic experience could be had with these records. Anybody have their own story to tell about that?
  7. Donald Clarke - Billie Holliday:Wishing zon The Moon https://share.google/mLHaof3scG4hDuReS Accept no substitutes!
  8. What was the rock-and-roll movie that Thader performed in?
  9. Going into the weekend with this set: First up: Mostly recorded in 1968, with one session in January 1969. I LOL-ed at a mention in the liner notes that noted that the JSQ was specifically asked to NOT play Beethoven in their earlier days, and were at least once BOOED when they actually did! By this time, though, they had matured a bit, and can't imagine anybody booing this.
  10. In Arlen, the flags are at half-mast. RIP
  11. Yeah, that's a good book. I very much appreciated the musical analyses, but also the non-musical parts. Unless you're one of those types that freezes up at the mere sight of a staff, it's still kind of a go=to book in my mind.
  12. Jeanna Gray - It Feels Good (But In A Good Way)!!!
  13. That's a weird record...a lot less CTI-ish than I was expecting. More like a really good club band, One of the earliest CTIs though, right?
  14. I don't do Apple, but if they're offering lossless files, I would take take that deal! Waiting for the French Sony CDs to come at an affordable price might take a while, and waiting for Sony Classical is...how long are you planning on living? But this set of music...I have other sets, and it's one of those things where there are differences, but there is not "better".
  15. Storrs Neevle - Your Teeth Are Bothering Me
  16. I just ripped that French 2-CD set and combined everything into one folder. Much to my delight, the six quartets can then be burnt into thee discs of two quartets each, in order, and each of a respectable or better duration: 1-2 = 59:05 3-4 = 37:55 5-6 = 60:27 Has Testament or somebody like them issued these? Even if they have, CBS Sony really has a gap here, imo. Pretty remarkable performances.
  17. Not at all a fan of the music, but certainly a hoot as a Pop Culture figure. RIP, and lay off the bats up there!
  18. Yeah, Fogarty had a hot string of radio hits, his band left him, and he had exactly one hit after. I get that he feels like he got screwed, but objectively, he got stuck with the deal he made and he was kinda over before he had leverage to redo terms. Welcome to the record business. He wasn't the first and he won't be the last. Besides, CCR...good to hear on the oldies radio, but geez, who still listens to that? Ever? Take me out coach, I'm not ready to play.
  19. Hey, Zaentz did business with Mingus...
