What Classical Music Are You Listening To?
JSngry replied to StarThrower's topic in Classical Discussion
The record has much stronger performances (vocally and musically) than that video, so if you like that well enough, definitely get the record. Had I been paying attention, I could have heard it live here! https://www.dallasnews.com/arts/opera/2017/05/04/dallas-operas-arjunas-dilemma-realizes-hindu-legend-mix-indian-western-musical-styles I'm learning that if you can get a good DVD of an opera, go for it. Best of both worlds, or as close as it can be other than live. -
What Classical Music Are You Listening To?

Proceed with confidences both positive and wary. I very much like it as a whole, but it seems like there might be sections that would have visual appeal, which you don't get here, obviously. But the parts where it careens from Carnatic melisma to operatic tenor to Bollywood scoring and then etcetc, it's pretty compelling, imo, if only becuase I('ve not heard anything quite like it - and by the time it's over, I do want to hear it again. -
So...if I call up my local NPR station (or yours for that matter) and ask them to play me all that good Tyshawn Sorrey that their own poll picked as a great record from the last year, they're gonna obligate me right away and put it out all over the air, correct? And same with all these other critic's picks, right? They're all gonna be ready to throw down with all the poll winners, right? We're NPR, we'll tell you what is good and we'll play it for you all you ask, this is how it works, right? Can't wait to pledge for all that public service!

Does anybody have a menu from the Royal Roost? Apparently they served fried chicken! -
Puerling & Farnon, unfettered.

A Hi-Lo's Trend/Starlite set, that would have been justified. But no, they give us the FFF instead. The four freshmen had one formula and replicated it endlessly across different songs and backgrounds. They don't impress me, never have. Gene Puerling, otoh had a deeeeep skill set, and the early Hi-Lo's records are full of surprises, things that are seriously WTF-ish. Now sure, the "cutesy" stuff...it is what it is, but even it is loaded with some seriously crazymad writing and singing. Gene Puerling was deep. Bow wow wow. For a full measure, get that Singers Unlimited a capella collection, there's where the marvel is out in full force.

The Crosby set was justified. The Four Freshman set was just lame,n lame in every way.

Right...but if the problem has only recently developed, has it been established that the external was only recently plugged in at boot time, or has the external long been plugged in?

One Classical Recording You'd Like Others To Hear

Yeah, they did that series for Spain, they all had the weird blue-tinged cover, I got something out of that, I forget what. But US Blue Note did it too: The music on that series was excellent, of course. But the covers were pretty creep... https://www.discogs.com/label/343585-The-Blue-Note-Collection I mean, c'mon, stop it before somebody gets hurt!

Messiaen’s ‘Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant-Jésus’
JSngry replied to paul secor's topic in Classical Discussion
For the times when I want to consider multiple options, I do recommend Berkshire Record Outlet. In this case: https://www.broinc.com/search.php?row=0&brocode=&stocknum=&submit=Find+Item&text=messiaen+vingt+regards&filter=all -
But why? Serious question, trying to figure this one out myself, like with Car Talk...

Those were originally Solid State, they were released on Blue Note unedited and stuff that had come out on Laserlight or some other LRC (Lester Records Cartel), but it's all the same thing now, maybe?

yeah, that'll work.

Just heard the name in the last week or so. Catching up on my magazine backlog and read an Alex Ross (I know....) review of some of the goings-on around the LA Phil's centennial season, and he totally raved about Norman's new work "Sustain", and the way he described it, the way it worked, sounded very much like something I wanted to hear, if nothing else, just to hear the process. And of course, it's only very recently been premiered, so there's no records or videos yet(?). But I started Googling the guy, and it turns out that he's a "hot name" in contemporary composer circles, which in and of itself doeswn't impress me, I mean, is this guy for real or is this a case of the flavor of the decade having gotten the fix in, you know, or more accurately, I DON'T know, so I poked around the web some more and found enough samples to say, yes, I might indeed be interested, let's see if anybody else is too. What I definitely DO like is the very energetic break away from Glass-ian minimalism. I've been tired of that for about as long as it's been around (although enough music that has grown out of that is just fine), The guy's 39, so he's not a kid, but in today's environment, I think it also means that he's still going to grow (or at least evolve). So, we''ll see, eh?

I had a performance-affecting issue with my external, not in booting, but with slowing everything waaaaay down while it ran it's random(to the best of my knowledge) backups. Sometimes they do what they want to do and make it none too easy to tell them otherwise, at least I couldn't figure out how to stop it. It went away when I got a new machine and got 10. My lesson learned was to never install an external's own backup software. It seems a little..."territorial" once it gets on there. Also/possibly food for thought - I had been a lifetime Dell user, 4 desktop units, going back to the days of Windows 3.5 and 5" floppies. When it came time to replace the last one, both of my kids came down really hard on me to not buy another Dell, as was my instinct, but to get one built instead. They told me that it's pretty easy now, really, and you can save beaucoup bucks. Well, uh....no, not me. But my daughter's boyfriend is a serious geek, and he said he'd be happy to do it for me. So we went to MicroCenter (shopping!), bought the good stuff, and the next day, voila, a really good system that does everything I ask it to do at a significant fraction less than a Dell equivalent. So if you have access to that option and the Dell is about ready to RIP, do not despair about the budget.

I love it when people post about how they're not going to post anymore, and then come back later to say how they're not going to post anymore, and then,,,,etc. That's funny! But don't take my word for it!
-
If it were my computer, I'd back up all the data, wipe the existing HD, install Windows 10, and then bring my data back. If that doesn't get it, hey, shopping trip!!! Believe it or not, that might end up being your shortest distance between two points, AND you get to go shopping. Find a record store while you're out there consuming!

Again, no qualms about the validity of those sets, or of the Wilson, or the upcoming Armstrong. But...what kind of, for lack of a better term, "post-1959" musics/artists do we have any reasonable expectations of looking forward to/even halfway hoping for? It seems to me that Michael was the one navigating that fork of the stream, and who's in line to take that up if/when he retires?

But she's enamored!

I'd be surprised if the bulk of this wasn't live recordings. Best as I can tell, the still-unreleased vault sessions are best left that way.
