  2. Must be a US release, because I saw it in a local brick-and-mortar shop for $10. Looks to be a Verve slimline digipak. There's a CD Universe page, which I won't give because I don't know how to link it with Organissimo...

  4. Sorry for OT inquiry (this seems like the best candidate of existing threads), but does anyone have an opinion on Johnny Griffin's Argo release JG, with Ware and Mance? I just saw a (new release?) mid-price CD, and am considering it. I so far have only two Blue Notes, A Blowing Session (which I dig), and The Congregation (which didn't do much for me, despite my Sonny Clark obsession), and had been planning to try some Riversides next.
  5. I've read some very interesting articles about the Chinook-Marion Tinsley rivalry. Unfortunately, I forget the sources, and a quick Google didn't turn up anything...

  7. Going back to the subject of retired players' injuries, there was an interesting photo spread in last week's Sports Illustrated. It was a reunion of Heisman Trophy winners. Most guys were striking football poses, but Earl Campbell conspicuously remained seated, presumably because of his physical condition.

  9. Happy birthday! I'm practically a neighbor in upstate NY (likely 45-50 mi west), but slightly older...
  10. Ordered a couple of (low-priced) Al Haig discs from Amazon Marketplace sellers: Ornithology and Trio and Sextet.

  17. Another modern classical composer who writes a lot of silences is Salvatore Sciarrino. Ben Johnston's String Quartet #3 has a short "silent movement". It's on the New World recording. I listened before reading the liner notes, and it freaked me out.

Yes, I also own Live in New York, but don't rate it nearly as high as the albums I mentioned above. Re. Jay Hawk Talk, it's good, and definitely worth getting if you like Carmell Jones, but I don't spin it as frequently as the Mosaic Select for some reason...it's a decent but not outstanding sideman appearance by Harris IMO, with the piano having that awful Alderson/Schlitten/Prestige underwater sound. You should check out Charles McPherson's Bebop Revisited (Prestige), also with Jones and Harris, which I like even more!
  21. I dig Ichiro a lot, but am afraid that his speed-based game may not hold up through a new 5-year contract. Still, he brings in so much revenue from Japanese sources that, as long as he can play at a respectable level, the dollars probably make sense from a business/P&L perspective (if not from the strictly baseball POV).
  22. My father's hobby is audio, and he constantly scours flea markets for stereo equipment, which he restores (if necessary) and turns over. I get to try out lots of the stuff, especially old CD players. The ability to acquire decent players for $10-25 makes the transport+DAC setup very attractive. My experience is that Denon changers are decent, but the quality has fallen off noticeably over the years, so they aren't worth paying too much for. Sony ES equipment (mentioned by Quincy) is great, if you can find it used. Onkyo "Integra"-level stuff is also excellent, but my only experience is with a single-disc player. I'm currently using a non-Integra Onkyo 6-CD changer as a transport; it has some annoying mechanical quirks (probably due to dust/dirt), but plays/reads fine.
  23. The doping shouldn't really bother me, since it's been going on forever, including years when I paid great attention to the TdF, but the Puerto-related stuff just seems too sleazy for my taste. And I suppose we shouldn't have too many illusions about any professional sport being drug-free... I'm following the Tour casually, enjoying the spectacle but not caring overly much about the results. The field seems wide open this year, which is a plus. I followed the Giro much more avidly this year, as I find it (esp. the Dolomites) much more beautiful than the TdF, and some of the mega-climbs (Tre Cime, Zoncolan) were spectacular. I don't expect this Tour to match the Giro for excitement. [Yes, I know that the Giro's probably more "dirty" than the Tour...]

OT, but Jaki Byard really suffered at the hands of Schlitten and Alderson...On the otherwise great Jaki Byard Experience, for instance, the piano sounds like it's underwater.
