  3. Thanks! I owned Hollywood. It's good, but paled a bit on repeated readings, so didn't "make the cut" when I downsized the personal library. Will definitely try Post Office next. There's definitely funny stuff in the short story collections, but some serious darkness mixed in... Interesting that you mention Barfly; Hollywood treatments generally don't fare well with literature fans. I may have to set aside my dislike for Mickey Rourke and rent it.
  4. I liked a couple of short story collections published by City Lights: Tales of Ordinary Madness and The Most Beautiful Woman in Town and other Stories. Read a couple of full-length novels that I liked less. I sort of lack the poetry gene, so can't help in that direction. Disclaimer: I donated all my Bukowski to the library a couple of years back, so I can't say I consider anything indispensable...

  6. Seems like as I get older, I follow sports less and less each year... I'm too lazy to work up all these picks every week for 17 weeks in a row. But I'll check the standings, and may return after the regular season, to defend the playoff crown.

  14. We've had relatively few super hot/humid days this summer (in fact, it's been quite a good season in the Catskill region of NY), but the past 3 days have been really horrible. Particularly the humidity. Fortunately, it's supposed to break tonight.

  20. Too complex to answer the question overall, since I made two buys in last Summer's Concord blow-out, and have steadily been adding titles since then. One noteworthy recent addition: thanks to an excellent seller on this BBS, I just picked up Eric Dolphy At the Five Spot, Volume 1 K2, which I had tried in vain to buy in last year's blowout.

  23. My experience is if they don't come up with your cd(s) within two weeks, they cancel the order. The last time I took advantage of there sale, I received 2 of the 4 discs. Two were placed on backorder. A good time had passed and I wondered of there status. I called there 800 number and that was there response. I wish I knew of this beforehand, since I saw one of the recordings in a store and passed up on purchasing them. My experience with J&R on backorders is pretty dismal. If the item doesn't clearly show "In Stock" on their site, I don't even bother to put it in the shopping cart. I found that the not-in-stock, "ships in 2-4 weeks" (or whatever) items basically never shipped, and just slowed the rest of the order down by two weeks. [Added] Just got e-mail from J&R pimping a "Jazz Sale". In addition to the BNs, there are a lot of OJCs for $7.99. Their best sale prices on OJC have been $6.99, but the $7.99 level may still warrant adding a few items to BN orders...
  24. I was told that this is a federal matter because Bad Newz Kennels organized the fights in Tennessee and elsewhere (Georgia?) in addition to Virginia. Yes, a Sports Illustrated article mentioned this a few weeks ago. Not just organization; Vick's (and partners') dogs were transported across state lines to participate in fights. Haven't seen details of the plea agreement yet. It'll be interesting to see what goes down on the Federal charges. I did hear on the radio this afternoon that Vick is likely to do some jail time.
  25. Thanks much! I'll remit via PayPal as soon as you send your e-mail address (or PP instructions). Very considerate of you to ship so quickly. [Added] Fantastic transaction, CDs arrived today in what must be a speed record for CA->NY.
