the beatles... i find a lot to admire in their songs, creativity, humour, cleverness, whatever... (similar with david bowie) but i can't say that their music really reached me on an emotional level the way, say my favorite aztec camera, syd barrett, nick drake, stars song has reached me... maybe a generations thing... i would immediately agree that kurt cobain's 30 best songs can't compete at all with the Beatles' 30 best songs (and to a lesser extent i would agree with 5 best songs ) but in terms of finding my own feelings expressed i clealy prefer cobain (and someone who died in the US when i was 12 is not completely my generation anymore i'd say)

would be really interesting to get that perspective (i mean - if a rock fan came over here worshipping jazz artists from the 60's and 70's we would probably rather direct him to lesser known jazz artists from the 50s and 60s than to contemporary stuff... always thought in rock there was a similar tendency to look back - though maybe not as strong as in jazz) but i might be completely wrong...

lots of thngs i agree with totally (some of which i saw clearer than others) (some points i am to young/european to understand them) while the music as a whole did not reach greater heights or whatever i think there have still been some fine songs (even albums) in more recent years (listened to elliot smith, bonnie prince billy, jeff buckley (at olympia) and some the cure recently - all stuff which is maybe not innovative but nice to have around at least for me) (and is it rock?)

you mean it is not consensus that the early nineties with, say, Oasis and Nirvana were still a pretty good time in rock? Definitely not! As a matter of fact, the declaration that Kurt Cobain was the next John Lennon caused me to finally leave rock behind and seek out other forms of musical enjoyment. i am certainly not cobain's biggest fan (not even among his 10 million biggest fans i guess, actually), but i still like to hear their albums (don't have to own them for this) though not the way i like to hear, say, kenny doham... as aggie said memories have a lot to do with this...

actually, i like these very mixed lists, like the one paul secor recently posted... they tell you a lot about the author and sometimes you see connections you can identify with or see a completely unknown item within stuff you really like... and so on; don't think these lists aim at people who try to get started with listening to jazz... but I think that 100 is quite a lot and that 15-30 is maybe better for making a statement (but that's only the opinion of someone who has heard relatively little and has a relatively small collection) (and all the nice things i just said don't apply to a list that has 11 authors - although i found the list pretty interesting before i knew this) just saw, import_cds at amazon.com has lucky thompson vogue vol 1, new for 3$ (similar offer also at amazon.de)

hadn't made it to Cologne during the day time for half a year until last Saturday... found that my favorite used cd store (Music Rebel) had closed... went to the other (not at all great) used cd store around the corner and (in their closing sale) bought Bonnie Prince Billy - Sings Greatest Palace Music not bad though i don't think i will play it even half as much as the album of his that i own "Master and everyone" ("Why can't I be loved as what I am a wolf among wolves and not as a man among men" kitsch but not too serious about it)

there is one thing left i do not get... i understand that caution is needed... but then: why did the psychic's word get the teachers started (and not observing the girls sexualized behavior (whatever that means))... alexander and goodspeak: after observing "sexualized behavior", would you have waited with the investigation until one of your assistants got a hint from his or her psychic? With 40 kids in a class? Please. wtf? you say when you observe "sexualized behavior" in a class of 40 kids you can't do anything... investigations will have to wait until some ta went to his or her psychic (and the absence of the psychic let's alexanders story sound a good deal better than the one in the article... i mean - i am not even saying that the teacher should just have forgotten about his ta's psychic's report... that would have been ok with me but say, i also would have found ok (maybe better) some phone call to the mother in the evening "you know, this may sound horrible, and there are hardly any facts behind it, but as it's a serious thing... this crazy person who works with us went to see her psychic..." but this here sounds like a completely crazy reaction - why does the poor women have to leave her job right away... amazing how many issues from this thread appear in this ali g clip

on a vaguely related note lee morgan appeared in a dream of mine last night... (to get into the details, as far as i still remember them, he was walking down the street like two meters in front of me (a housing area like 10 minutes from here, can post detail in case anyone is interested) we came by a house and a small (70% of normal size) russian-looking man with a brown beard (he would turn out to be a tenor player a few minutes later) was lying about 1.5 meters from the ground on a bush, he seemed to have slept there, lee and i got him down and went into the house, directly behind the door was a woman, can't remember her very well, she was his sister and after a brief conversation it turned out she had just shot their dad and was glad we brought her (enchanted?) brother back... the whole thing had some sort of parsival-feel to it...) then i woke up (after all it's not surprising that russians appeared in my dream last night, don't know about the house, but the street was familiar... lee morgan and a murder)

would you say the answer to this question should be "yes" in the present story? I'm guessing by "similar," he means the psychic has another vision which is shared with the teacher. I can only imagine how THAT conversation would go: CPS: Were you aware of any instances of child abuse before this one? Teacher: Yes. CPS: Can you elaborate. Teacher: Yes, my psychic told me. CPS: Your psychic told you? Teacher: Yes, my psychic told me. CPS: So your psychic witnessed the child being abused? Teacher: No, she just had another vision. CPS: So, your psychic had a vision of this child being abused. Teacher: Well, not exactly; it was a child whose name begins with the same letter as the child in question. CPS: So, let me get this straight: you see a psychic and this psychic tells you of a vision she had wherein an unidentified child is being abused. And this isn't the first time. Teacher: Well, yes... CPS: And you immediately drew the conclusion that the child in question was the child in the vision. Teacher: Um, well... CPS: Has the child said anything about being sexually abused? Teacher: Well, uhh... CPS: Has the child made any motions that would indicate sexual abuse of any kind? Teacher: Well, she makes these sexually-oriented gyrations.... CPS: You do know the child is autistic, right? And the child can barely control her own movements, right? Teacher: Well, yeah, but... my psychic told me! I hope this teacher is severely reprimanded for such a blatantly stupid act.

got five from the list, the ones i would consider for my desert island package are unity and the lucky thompson (though in the end i would probably leave unity at home and substitute the thompsons with one of the other 1956 Paris discs (americans swinging in paris)... funnily however the remaining three are on my list of stuff i definitely want to check out more deeply sometime so maybe including them would be a pretty good idea..., the ortega especially.. New dance- Anthony Ortega, Hatology 1966-1967 Blacktone legacy- Woody Shaw, Contemporary 1970 The Complete Vogue recrdings- Lucky Thompson, Vogue 1956-57 Unity- Larry Young, Blue Note 1965 Art Pepper meets the rythm section- Art Pepper, Contemporary 1957 detected one more - great one, should pull it out again (especially the session with art farmer) Memorial volume 1 and 2- Wardell Gray, OJC 1949-52

here is an article (in filipino) which actually mentions a Beidai Recording Company http://filipino.cri.cn/chinaabc/chapter24/chapter240110.htm
-
asked my chinese colleague what he can read (so maybe let's forget for a moment that he keeps his dirty laundry under my table at work) he says the song is called "I want you come" ( ) the artist is Yi Min (where Yi is the family name) and the company is called Shanghai Beidai Cassette Company (where i wouldn't take the word cassette too literally as he called the record a cassette...)

what about woody shaw's song of songs?

wonder whether the studio takes are the material from the mosaic or the session Anthoy Ortega mentioned in his interview with Steve Isoardi... or both? some board members might know more...?
