not that i've heard these, but isn't Strickland the Abdul Rahim Mustafa on Donald Ayler's Firenze recordings (no idea where i read this so it may be bs) Indeed, Abdul Rahim Mustafa was plain Donald Strickland then! He is on that Donald Ayler concert. From what I remember, he was much more at ease and impressive with Tyler! always wonder whether googling names like abdul rahim mustafa or majid shabazz will get me in trouble some day

don't have the best Turrentone records it seems, after reading this thread, but my favorites are Shirley Scott's Blue Flames (OJC) and the The Common Touch (and then the Legends of Acid Jazz Scott twofer)

no idea about WOLFERT BREDERODE but he has Claudio Puntin in his band which promises great things!

Jazz tunes that refer to science fiction novels and tales
Niko replied to Larry Kart's topic in Miscellaneous Music
according to jack chambers dick twardzik discography http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/~chambers/twardzik2.html there is an earlier (1954) recording, Serge Chaloff's Fable of Mable where it is titled Slam ?! -
on phil woods homepage under http://www.philwoods.com/disco/data3.php# there is some more info (click on the album covers for details, always the same lineup), don't know how reliable that is...

great, i was right! nice how he pronounces berlin in the german portion in a way that you can really hear it comes from (the (very similar) german word for) "bear"
-
how do you pronounce "Berlin" in English? emphasis on ber or on lin? (heated discussion over lunch today )

Caiman.com on amazon Suspect cdrs sold as new.
Niko replied to Jazztropic's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I think that Ron has it right, and that some people see rare OOP titles listed by Caiman and then get ticked off when they don't show up when the reality is that the listing should be taken with a grain of salt. Take the plunge, hope you get a shipping confirmation in a week or so or else cancel. Its not that difficult. But that still doesn't justify their re-listing of items they'll never get! and it can't be that hard - even for a huge seller - to keep track of orders that were cancelled because of unavailability on their side... (at least sometimes it helps to keep the prices of other sellers relatively low i guess) -
Caiman.com on amazon Suspect cdrs sold as new.
Niko replied to Jazztropic's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I can see that. Still, what happened to me recently was that Caiman suddenly listed an item (on Amazon Marketplace UK as it were) which had previously not been available. Suddenly Caiman indicated it as "in stock" (which of course it wasn't, as they have no stock). So how do they suddenly decide that they will be able to get an item? In the end, it costed me a dollar because of the varying exchange rates so it was no big deal, but still... i also find that irritating, stuff like, Don Patterson's Dem New York Dues or Woody Shaw's Song of Songs, i ordered from them within the last six months after they put a NEW offer out for them, the cds never arrived i got my money back, the offer disappeared and came back a few weeks later, admittedly i didn't try to order again, but still, i really don't see the point of what they are doing (didn't read the whole thread) - do they want a credit without interest at the cost of making their seller rating worse? that said, i still order for them, i can afford giving free credit from time to time and when they do ship they have good prices... edit to say, it seems all i wrote had been written before, but as there are still non-believers out there, why not; my experience with chmarche24 was good so far; most annoying experience was with cd-lp-dvd, took several emails to get my money back, but then when they deliver they are so fast (within germany) that i still use them anyway -
got destination out yesterday and have only tried the first 6 minutes, it sounds great

We are renowned for our infectious colds in the UK. Everyone here is permanently full of them. Get well soon ! thank you! (guess it rather was my own stupidity, i was kinda nervous monday night because tuesday was quite an important day and in britain you have to step outside to smoke (and i am certainly not complaining about that...) so i spent a little more time outside than i should have that night...) (by now only the backpain is left ) bought today: Jackie McLean - Destination ... Out

scan of the water is life cover, though not all the information you need (and unlike luminaries like Heinz Rudolf Kunze and Howard Carpendale, Mariano is not among the ca 20 artists mentioned on the cover ?! or is there another single...) http://www.bap-total.de/single/waterislife.html great site!

came back from three days in england yesterday with three great jazz in paris cds from the hmv sale (Byrd in Paris, Django Reinhardt Nuages, Bobby Jaspar au Club St Germain de Pres) (and a cold, headache and severe backpain for the first time in my live - people have always told me this backpain would come to me some day given that i am tall and don't do sports - now i am almost certain it will never go away and feel tired / like the first 10% have already left this planet, especially the reinhardt is a perfect soundtrack for that mood )

The liner notes to the Cicala LP gave the personnel for those tracks as Duke Jordan, Bill Crow, Kenny Clarke plus unknown trumpet Cicala was a joke as far as accuracy was concerned but this bootleg operation released some material that had not been made available to the public until then. coincidentally, on the west coast jazz mailing list they are discussing all day how to convert european dvds so that pianist john williams can watch them with his american dvd player - seems he is still around...

thank you! the tracks with Getz are among my favorite parts of that set, especially the version of Dear Old Stockholm... that you made a note indicates there was no personnel on that lp - sounds (a little) like it was the one Levitt had, too (does it also say "Carnegie Hall and Birdland"?; iirc the announcer says "Stan Getz at Birdland and Get Happy", and the same guy announces "Pernod"); who doesn't love walking the streets of Paris?
-
i read Al Levitt's Fruscella article (http://www.jazzmagazine.com/Vies/portraits/fruscella/fruscella.htm) again last night and stumbled across the following: now there is no recording with Levitt and Crow in Jonathan Kutler's/Michael Fitzgerald's Fruscella Discography, there is however this entry, indicating that the Fruscella/Getz live session with only three tracks was reissued on an lp called Yesterdays... does anybody know more about this? is there more Fruscella on some cheapo Getz live compilation, or is there just some confusion regarding the people in the rhythm section...? (just see in the discography it says, "Q 013 gives incorrect date as 1953", 1953 seems to correspond to the Crow/Levitt rhythm section from a very superficial research... any idea on who is right? (guess i have to give up the hope for more Fruscella...) after all Levitt should know, but then...

Hingis tests positive for cocaine !!!
Niko replied to Van Basten II's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
on a positive note ( ) , i can heartily recommend, two great novels (actually (a really great one and another on that's just very fine) that deal excessively with the pros and cons of cocaine Jörg Fauser "The Snowman" http://www.amazon.com/Snowman-Jorg-Fauser/...4670&sr=8-1 (even better is his autobiography Rohstoff, not translated into English it seems, which is the best (and arguably most desillusioned) book about Germany around 1970 i know - through his heroin addiction the author is "forced" to spend his time in leftist/hippie circles which he understands a little to well to enjoy...) the second book would have been pitigrilli's "cocaine" but it doesn't seem to be available in english... -
admitted, my post reads like i took it personal, can't even remeber 10 minutes later...

Well, that's another thing that sticks in my craw (and again, this is nothing personal). "rather open to...", like it's some sort of controversial...moral issue or something like that. Fender Rhodes, percussion...OOOOOHHHH, DO WE DARE????? What about vamps & chants? LET"S LIVE ON THE EDGE!!! I mean, damn, the shit happened, and it happened lots. Some of it was really really good and some of it wasn't, but saying that one is "rather open to it" in 2007 is like saying that one is "rather open to" the use of electronic keyboards on pop records... No idea how old some y'all are, but I'm telling you for real - If you're getting into jazz these days, you're gonna hear a lot of bullshit about what it "is" or "isn't". And you're liable to end up thinking that a freakin' Fender Rhodes is something to be looked at with a combination of fear, dread, and if you got some heretic in you, something to scandalize the elders with. Hey - this is 2007 - it's a fucking Fender Rhodes. Nothing else. i was not talking about where i see or saw the boundaries of jazz (this question hardly interests me) but about which sounds i like or liked to have around me, "rather open to" was just a (somewhat ironic and not particularly well-formulated) statement about my personal development concerning musical tastes, trying to indicate that i don't think my problem with Rosewood is that it's from the 70s, besides that, all in all i like rosewood quite a bit); it did take me several years to learn to like Fender Rhodes, i started with Benny Goodman in 1994, had my personal bebop revolution in 1996, and always knew that i knew almost nothing about recent musical developments (which i do feel a little bad about sometimes, but not much)
