Well, the way I suggested it I can always see if the item is by an artist whom I'm interested in before reading the rest of the line. So I can skip over all Miles Davis CDs (for example) if I know that I have all the Miles I need, saving quite some time. The way you presented those items actually kept me from reading the entire list, I got annoyed with having to read it all after about one third and just gave up. I imagine other people might have done the same.

Thanks for the detailed impressions. I can live without that Woody Herman track, so I'll probably end up getting the Jazz Factory set. Along with their two Sonny Criss discs that's the third Jazz Factory album on my current wish list... Although I'll probably see what price the Chaloff Mosaic set fetches on eBay these days before I buy any of these three smaller compilations - if it's not too much, I might just end up getting that one and trying to hunt down a copy of that "Early Bebop on Keynote" CD that includes the Red Rodney session not included in the Mosaic.
-
I still haven't decided which way to go with early Serge Chaloff but I managed to find a copy of this CD for just 7 Euro today.
-
Me too. I've liked most of those ESP Disk remasters so far.
-
As for what is probably a record of a different kind, I bought the Gerry Mulligan Complete Verve Concert Jazz Band sessions Mosaic set for less than 20 Euro - that was the actual Buy it now!-Price on eBay. I was on the fence regarding that set (not really a big fan of bigger ensembles, but I dig Mulligan and Bob Brookmeyer) and this offer made it REALLY easy to decide for the set after all.
-
It would be helpful if you'd put the artist and album names first in the auction title, it's kind of a drag to browse a list of over 70 discs when most of those titles start with stuff like "prestige CD", "japan CD" or "blue note usa 1987 cd".
-
The CD seems pretty hard to find. Maybe they'll reissue it some day.
-
All the information I have is listed above. I got the CD today. The 1952 recording sounds decent even though the drums are mostly reduced to white noise. There's some distortion that's evident mostly during Duke Jordan's piano introductions. The 1949 recording sounds older but better, if that makes any sense... I'm quite happy with this purchase, it fills two gaps in my collection nicely.
-
This is on the way to me as we speak. Should be good! Too bad the DVD only includes a duet performance of Spain and not a whole set. Finally! Oh, wait... I actually meant this one: Finally! The last Sonny Rollins studio album still missing from my collection!

Looking for two OJC CDs featuring Teddy Charles
Kyo replied to Kyo's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I'm all set, nothing left to see here. -
It's a great site indeed, I've found many OOP discs there for really nice prices.
-
And that's what I did...
-
I'm looking for Teddy Charles' New Directions and the Thad Jones/Frank Wess/Teddy Charles/Mal Waldron CD Olio. Fair offers only. No, I don't want to pay $20+ for each of these... Please contact me via PM or email: progsnob (at) gmail (dot) com Thanks!

Certainly not, an example would be the Adderley two-fer that I mentioned - only the plain layout of the discographical info pages of the booklet and the back inlay looks rather cheap, otherwise it's fine and a real alternative to the real Savoy CDs.
-
I just received the second Jazz Heritage CD in recent years - the first being a copy of the "Addlerley Brothers - Summer of '55" Savoy two-fer that wasnt too bad. The new one is a copy of Jimmy Smith's The Master with crappy black & white artwork - WTF? I find it amazing that a company would even offer something like that. Unlike the other item (where I read it was a Jazz Heritage release and simply didn't know what that meant), this time there was no mention of them in the item description. We Europeans had to deal with those lame ZYX Fantasy digipacks and "special" remastering. I guess this is the kind of non-regular edition surprise you have to live with in in the US...

Falling Water seems to be the only piece not included in the individual disc releases in any form ( the Barracudas piece ended up as a bonus on Quiet Nights). Of course the individual CDs don't include ALL of the alternates and work in progress material from the box, but some of that is there. Having never heard the box, I'm happy with the individual discs. It seems a large chunk of the box set's liner notes was excerpted in the individual disc's booklets, too
-
Well, not for me. Yup - absolutely nothing, why would they? Anything else would mean that they'd have to DO something before putting the whole thing on their site - why would they do that?
-
Well, you can always try to tell the first two sessions apart by whether there's a piano or an organ playing.
-
The liner notes aren't really that helpful either, but here's the information contained therein: On tracks 1, 3, 6 and 8 Frank Morgan, Conte Candoli, Wild Bill Davis & "Machito's Rhythm Section" (whoever that was at the time...) On tracks 2, 4, 5, 7, 9 and 10 Frank Morgan, Conte Candoli, Wardell Gray, Howard Roberts, Carl Perkins, LeRoy Vinnegar, Larance Marable On tracks 11-15 Frank Morgan, Jack Sheldon, James Clay, Bobby Timmons, Jimmy Bond, Larance Marable August 11, 1956 About the recording dates of the first two sessions it says that they were recorded when Frank Morgan was 22 years old (born December 23 1933). But it also says that the session with Wardell Gray was Gray's last recording session as he died in May 1955 (at which point either Frank Morgan was still 21 or some of the given information is simply incorrect).

I am not confusing anything. The questions remain: Was there no 12" LP called Vol. 3 or is the Three/Two material considered part of the series even if it wasn't recorded by "His Men"? And if those original 10" Three/Two records really count as part of this series (does it say Vol. 3 and Vol. 4 anywhere on those?), why did they continue with a 12" LP called Vol. 4 and not simply Vol. 5? The only way this all makes sense is that they completely ignored the old numbering of the 10" LPs and that "The Three and The Two" was indeed considered as Vol. 3 of the series. Like this: First EPs: Vol. 1: CEP 4001 - Shelly Manne & His Men Vol. 1 (April 6, 1953) Vol. 2: CEP 4007 - Shelly Manne & His Men Vol. 2 (July 20, 1953) 10" LPs: Vol. 1: C-2503 - Shelly Manne & His Men Vol. 1 (combines CEP 4001 and CEP 4007) Vol. 2: C-2511 - Shelly Manne & His Men Vol. 2 - New Works (3 tracks each from December 18th 1953 and May 17th 1954) Vol. 3 (?): C-2516 - "The Three" with Shorty Rogers and Jimmy Giuffre Vol. 4 (?): C-2518 - "The Two" with Russ Freeman 12" LPs: Vol. 1: C-3507 - Shelly Manne & His Men Vol. 1: The West Coast Sound (C-2503 plus 4 new tracks from September 1955) Vol. 2: no 12" reissue? Vol. 3 (?): M-3584 The Three and The Two (combines C-2516 and C-2518) Vol. 4: C-3516 Swinging Sounds Vol. 5: C-3519 More Swinging Sounds Vol. 6: C-3536 Concerto for Clarinet and Combo Vol. 7: C-3557 The Gambit CD releases: Vol. 1: The West Coast Sound (same as C-3507) Vol. 2: New Works (combines C2511 and the Concerto from C-3536) Vol. 3 (?): The Three and The Two (same as M 3584) Vol. 4: Swinging Sounds (same as C-3516) Vol. 5: More Swinging Sounds (same as C-3519) Vol. 6: not on CD yet in its entirety, the title track is on the Vol. 2 CD Vol. 7: The Gambit (same as C-3557)

Thanks. So I was right about that after all? Interesting... That again is a bit odd, since at least on my CD copy of "Swinging Sounds" it clearly says "Vol. 4". Maybe that wasn't anywhere to be seen on the LP? It's not part of the cover artwork at least.
-
Excellent, thank you! Guess I'll have to get this one soon then.

I just got a reply from Michael Cuscuna. Without going into details let me just say that there is some hope.
