I just got a reply from Michael Cuscuna. Without going into details let me just say that there is some hope.

I've done some more research and I think it was like this: Vol. 1: CEP 4001 April 6, 1953 Mallets You And The Night And The Music La Mucura Gazelle Vol. 2: CEP 4007 July 20, 1953 You're My Thrill Fugue Afrodesia Sweets Both were combined on the 10" LP C2503 (simply called Vol. 1 again), the four tracks from 1955 were then added to the 12" LP C3507 - "Vol. 1 - The West Coast Sound". So C2511 (Vol. 2, "New Works" - and no, that's not a reissue tag, it's just really small on the cover) could be considered the third volume in the series. I can see why they just called that one Vol. 2 (despite that earlier 7" EP release it is the second LP, after all) but why they went on to call the next LP Vol. 4 and not just Vol. 3 puzzles me. I would guess that's how it happened, though. I know, that's why I put "and The Two" in brackets. I know that as well, I was just trying to make some sense of the missing Vol. 3 and an album called "The Three" seemed like it might be the one despite all that.

I'm trying to piece together a rough discography of Shelly Manne & His Men on Contemporary. So far I have: Vol. 1: The West Coast Sound Vol. 2: New Works Vol. 3: ??? Vol. 4: Swinging Sounds Vol. 5: More Swinging Sounds (doesn't really say Vol. 5 on the CD though) Vol. 6: Concerto for Clarinet and Combo Vol. 7: The Gambit + the Black Hawk and Manne-Hole sets and the "Yesterdays" live disc on Pablo. Half of Vol. 6 ended up on the Vol. 2 CD with Sophisticated Rabbit, Bags' Groove and My Old Flame still not available on CD as it seems. What was Vol. 3? Was it Shelly Manne's The Three (and The Two)?

Not yet, but then you can always just get the Japanese version (I did).
-
That's good news, all these are on my Blue Note wishlist (I didn't get them because of the copy protection until now).
-
Is the "Stan Getz Quintet at Carnegie Hall" disc any good? I'm a bit worried about the sound.
-
I guess all European board members remember that not long ago all EMI discs were issued with annoying copy protection, forcing many fans to order imports from the US (those discs were still issued as regular audio CDs for some reason). EMI has dropped copy protection meanwhile and I've been seeing more and more discs from those batches without the copy protection - obviously re-pressed CDs with slightly altered artwork to get rid of those old copy protection warnings - they didn't even bother to use the original RVG spine lettering, instead the area where the copy protection message used to be is now just left black - weird). Here's what I've personally seen or even bought recently WITHOUT copy-protection: Horace Silver - Horace Silver Trio (spotlight on drums: Art Blakey - Sabu) Jimmy Smith - Home Cookin' Lonnie Smith - Turning Point Stanley Turrentine - That's Where It's At

Anyone have an idea when we can expect the next Gene Ammons Classics disc? It should cover the last tune from the Savoy "Red Top" album (Big Slam Pt 1+2) and the complete 1954 and 1955 session for Prestige, thus filling the final blanks in Jug's discography on CD (Fantasy still hasn't released some tracks from those sessions on CD...) up until and possibly partially including "The Happy Blues".
-
Too bad I already ordered a slightly overpriced copy a few days ago.
-
It seems the Mosaic came out in 1993, which would be quite odd. Hmmm... Maybe it was reissued in 2005 (possibly re-mastered?), after all many usually reliable sources claim that's the year that it came out. How is the sound of the Cool & Blue CD anyway?
-
Probably not, but I don't ever buy LPs.

Chet Baker in Paris 1955-1956, the Barclay sessions
Kyo replied to brownie's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
How can I have missed this until now? -
I'm definitely going to get the Boston 1950 CD. As for the other discs mentioned above, what I have from those CDs is the Dial material on the Gillespie/Berman disc - and I'll probably get the Oscar Pettiford Sextet stuff on Debut soon. The Savoy session with Pumpernickel for example seems to be only on some out of print Japanese various artists CD ("Lestorian Mode") . The other interesting material is the Red Rodney's Beboppers session which I could only get on an out of print Keynote CD (it wasn't even part of the Mosaic set). Those two sessions on really expensive rare discs alone would make one of those compilations worth getting, especially since those are all really cheap. Thanks for recommending the Carnegie Hall X-Mas '49 disc. It seems very hard to get, but I'll keep looking for it. Scanning the usual channels I haven't seen a single copy offered. So far the Cool'n'Blue CD seems like the way to go for me. Most online stores list it as a 2005 release by the way - I'd just like to make sure it came out after the Mosaic...

Time to resurrect this old thread... Both are available now, one features "Zoot" as a bonus and the has all of "Zoot!" added to the original album. Yes, those album titles weren't particularly unique... Can someone comment on the sound quality of those Fresh Sound discs? The bonus stuff is probably taken straight from the official releases, I just wonder where the "plays Alto(s)" etc. stuff has been taken from.

I'm currently researching Serge Chaloff's discography and there are three different compilation discs covering what I guess was (most of) the first disc of the old Mosaic set. Each of them is a little bit different in terms of bonus material but it's hard to find any reliable info on those extra tracks. Those are the track listings with the "exclusive" material in bold font: A Proper Introduction to Serge Chaloff - The Baritone Sax Master 1. Blue Serge 2. Curbstone Scuffle 3. Nocturne 4. Woodchopper's Holiday 5. All God's Children Got Rhythm 6. Elevation 7. Fine and Dandy 8. Goof and I 9. Pumpernickel 10. Gabardine and Serge 11. Serge's Urge 12. Bar a Second 13. We the People Bop 14. Chickasaw 15. Bop Scotch 16. Most 17. Pat 18. King Edward the Flatted Fifth 19. Goof and I 20. Everything Happens to Me 21. Pennies from Heaven 22. Four Brothers The Complete Small Group Bop Sessions (Jazz Factory) 1. Red Cross 2. Billie's Bounce 3. Body and Soul 4. Blue Serge 5. Curbstone Scuffle [-G] - Sonny Berman, Serge Chaloff, 6. Nocturn - Sonny Berman, Serge Chaloff, 7. Woodchopper's Holiday [-C] - Sonny Berman, Serge Chaloff, 8. Blue Serge [-A] 9. All God's Children Got Swing - Serge Chaloff, 10. Elevation - Serge Chaloff, 11. Fine and Dandy - Serge Chaloff, 12. Goof and I - Serge Chaloff, 13. Pumpernickel - Serge Chaloff Sextette 14. Gabardine and Serge [-2] - Serge Chaloff Sextette 15. Serge's Urge - Serge Chaloff Sextette 16. Bar a Second - Serge Chaloff Sextette 17. Chickasaw 18. Bop Scotch 19. Most! 20. Chasin' the Bass 21. Pat 22. King Edward the Flatted Fifth 23. Blue Serge [-B/C] Serge Chaloff Memorial - We the People Bop 1. Blue Serge 2. Blue Serge (2nd) 3. Curbstone Scuffle 4. Nocturne 5. Woodchopper's Holiday 6. All God's Children Got Rhythm 7. Elevation 8. Fine And Dandy 9. Good And I 10. Pumpernickel 11. Gabardine And Serge 12. Serge's Urge 13. Bar Second 14. We The Bop People 15. Cickasaw 16. Bopscotch 17. Most 18. Pat 19. King Edward The Flatted Fith 20. Move 21. Hot House 22. Ornithology I assume that the first two discs' bonus tracks are from the Boston 1950 Uptown disc which would make the last set the most interesting of them - however I have no idea where those final tracks are from and who plays on them. Maybe some people who have bought one of these sets can shed some light on this. I would also assume that those tracks that all the CDs share are ripped straight from the old Mosaic set. But if one of those discs sounds significantly better than the others (or has better annotation), I'd also like to hear about it. Thanks!

Brilliant, thanks a lot!
-
What's the personnel for this album? I can't seem to find any info on it.
-
I think the more important question is "how many of them are there in the quartet?"
-
I have downloaded just the Larry Young session from eMusic not too long ago and I must agree, it's really mediocre and it's very obvious why it's stayed in the can for so long.
-
Got the Lighthouse '66 disc yesterday and listened to it at least three times in a row. Great stuff!
-
Mail sent. Maybe if some others join the "We Want Stan!" chorus, this might actually happen.
-
The Definitive set contains about 136 minutes of music, the Shrine CD (minus the two studio cuts already in the Definitive set) another 52 of live tracks. Someone should suggest a Mosaic Select with the whole package! I think I'm gonna write Cuscuna an email about this right now!

Which Jazz box set are you grooving to right now?
Kyo replied to Cliff Englewood's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
But not nearly as beautiful as the RVGs. Oh yeah, now playing: My Herbie Nichols Blue Note set.
