If you ever get the opportunity, pick up the very scarce JRVG version (BCD 0053). This remastering brings a whole new feel to the session. Very well done.

Actually, I offered Weizen the Original Master Tape of 'Trompeta Troccata' signed by Kenny Dorham and a bonus TOCJ SACD copy mastered and signed by GregM, all for $9.95. He declined the offer. He said he would rather donate any spare change that he had to the Dennis Kocinich campaign. I certainly concurred.

So where were you this morning, Brad? I posted every TOCJ at the special price of $1.98 each. And with the purchase of every 5 TOCJs I gave away a free JRVG. And for puchasing a complete set of TOCJs for $29.95, Son-of-a-Weizen won the free tickets to the Democratic Convention in Boston in July. He said that it was a dream come true. So sorry Brad that you missed the sale.

Best Wishes. And I hope everything works out for you. (BTW, without your web site I'd be lost with respect to new releases.)

It was propounded by the editor of a monthly titled 'Digital Audio and Stereo Review' in the late 1980s. Supposedly, the green felt marker applied to the side of the disc would prevent the scattering of the laser beam which would then be focussed on the playing side of the disc. Of course, sceptics asked, why green? Why not, blue? The proponents had no coherent reply. Others asked that if the laser could be scattered then why not color the whole inside of the CD player? Again, the green felt proponents had no reply. The recent 'reverse polarity' proponents carry a similiar credibility as the green felt gang. Urban myths are fascinating. On the down side, many a CD was ruined by applying the green (and other assorted color markings) to the disc. 'Digital Audio and Stereo Review' went bankrupt around 1990.

Reason can prevail. Mr. Ricci's compromise is commendable.

Yes, that's that. It appears that AAJ just gave us a hearty KISS-OFF.
-
Of course, he can do whatever he wants. However, that does not make it any less petty.
-
The AAJ Board now BANS any mention of Organissimo or any other Jazz Site in its forums. That is really petty. When AAJ was down due to hacker problems I remember real concern being shown on this Board. However, as of today that feeling is no longer reciprocal. When the crash of this site today was noted on the AAJ site by Dmitry, the thread was promptly closed and posters were curtly told to go elsewhere.

NEW!!! Blue Note Europe Bulletin Board
grey replied to Aftab's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I tend to agree with Kevin Bresnahan and disagree with JSngry that the BNBB was not something wholly independent of the members who comprised the Board. The death knell occurred on the day Bo departed and no new moderator was appointed. From that point the Board began to spin out of control. I LOVE the old ('55-'65) Blue Note product and I really enjoyed the old BNBB, at least prior to Bo's exit. This Board is a godsend and all thanks are owed to B3er. This Board is my new jazz internet home and even if they resurrected the old BNBB that Board could never be the same again. EMI/Blue Note killed it. _______________________________________________________________ -
They are remastered by Tohru Kotetsu using RVG masters. They are a special Blue Note 65th anniversary issue using 180g vinyl.

On March 24 Toshiba-EMI will reissue numerous Blue Note LPs. They will retail for approximately $40. They will carry a TOJJ code. For example: TOJJ 6503 - Art Blakey - Moanin' TOJJ 6515 - Duke Jordan - Flight To Jordan
-
Bill Evans - Portrait In Jazz John Coltrane - Soul Trane Ella Fitzgerald/Oscar Peterson - Ella and Oscar Miles Davis - Cookin' MJQ - Django Selena Jones - My Love Wes Mongomery - Full House Sarah Vaughn and Count Basie - Sarah Vaughn and the Count Basie Orchestra Tropical Jazz Band - Tropical Jazz Band Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus and 2 other releases which I cannot translate. They are scheduled for release on March 10.

Claude, Thanks for confirming my initial translation and that we will now have yet another format release of these titles---DVD Audio. I did a rough calculation of their cost from yen to dollars and they will sell for around $45.
-
I received an email from JVC Japan and while it is in Japanese and I have some of it translated, it contained a surprise. I claim no accuracy for the following. It appears that numerous Prestige/Riverside titles will be released yet again but this time in a different format. The items are listed as 'Format - DVA' and the best translation that I can get is DVD-Audio. For example; Format: DVA - Bill Evans - Portrait In Jazz - VIAJ 60008 Format: DVA - Miles Davis - Cookin' - VIAJ 60009 There are about 12 titles in the series. Does anyone have any info about this release. Am I interpreting the DVD-Audio format correctly?

As well, with the JRVG of Hub Tones (TOCJ 9361) RVG used the same mastering for the JRVG as had been used for the RVG where the RVG release preceded the JRVG release. Since June '04 the JRVG and RVG use the same mastering.

I haven't had much time for CD browsing but I did stop into the Tower on the Upper West Side since we were visiting relatives in the area. It was quite a disappointment. I hadn't been there in almost 3 years and that was before the bankruptcy. This Towers location was one of the best retail sites that I had ever been to for imports but now it seemed real empty. Too bad. On the brighter side there is something magic about NYC at Christmas --- the lights, the decorations and even the snow the other night. We went to see the movie ELF last night and appropriately it is set in NY. A big

I have a satellite dish into the satellite receiver into a S-VHS recorder into the television-monitor. I have had the set-up now for 8 years. Two months ago the S-VHS recorder broke and as opposed to fixing it I got the Panasonic DMR - E50 which took over the functions of the S-VHS recorder. I learned long ago that a standard VHS recorder was useless with satellite recording since it provided such a degraded picture. The set-up with the DVD recorder as a replacement for the S-VHS recorder is excellent and unlike TIVO (which is an alternate method) the DVD recorder can play any DVD recording.

Tower and Virgin used to have good selections of TOCJs, JRVGs and VICJs. Do they no longer stock that stuff?
-
We're in NYC for a few days visiting family and friends for the holidays. It is the first time back home since March '01. I want to do some CD browsing but my time is quite limited. 1) Do the 2 Tower locations (W4th + W66th) still have good jazz import selections? 2) Do the 2 Virgin Megastores (14th + 45th) still have good jazz selections? 3) Is the Jazz Record Center (W26th) still worth a visit? I have no time to peruse used CD stores. Thanks for any advice offered.
-
Strictly speaking you are correct. This does become esoteric but for the sake of accuracy there is a difference between an OBI and an OBI Strip. All TOCJs and JRVGs have OBI Strips. The early JVC VICJ mini-LP Prestige releases had true OBIs. They then switched later releases to OBI Strips. The purpose of an OBI and OBI Strip is to carry all of the information required for a Japanese consumer to make an informed purchase while maintaining the original integrity of the Album or CD which is usually in English. They also contain other retail information. However, even Japanese releases have OBIs. I have 100s and 100s of duplicate TOCJ, JRVG, VICJ and other OBIs which the Japanese printer gave me. Would there be any market for these things? I don't know what to do with them.
-
Grey, educate me here. Were the TOCJs Rudy masterings? Some of them? most of them? all of them? I thought they were done by Japanese engineers. I only have a few TOCJs, so am unable to check that. All JRVGs are TOCJs but not all TOCJs are JRVGs. TOCJ is the Toshiba/EMI stock code. TOCJ means Toshiba/EMI Compact Jazz. One Board member will disagree with this meaning of TOCJ but it comes from a company document. When people refer to TOCJs they are not referring to JRVGs (even though JRVGs are TOCJs). They are referring to TOCJ 1501 - 1632 and 4001 - 4422 and some compilations which mostly, but not always, parallel the original Blue Note record numbers. They are only available in jewel case versions and are called the Blue Note Works Series. RVG had nothing to do with the mastering of these CDs. There are over 400 TOCJs. JRVGs are TOCJs in the 9000 or 66000 series, are mastered by RVG and come in mini-LP sleeves except for the JRVG Completes which are in double CD jewel cases. They are not refered to as TOCJs. There are about 350 JRVGs released so far with another 40 coming through March '04. While people compare JRVGs Vs RVGs, there is also another whole kettle of fish: JRVGs/RVGs Vs TOCJs. I have A/B/C'd every JRVG Vs RVG Vs TOCJ. (I have too much time on my hands.) Have I clarified or only confused?
-
Over the past 5 years I have A/B'd every JRVG Vs RVG through the June '03 JRVGs releases. 1)The domestic and Japanese masterings are different except for TOCJ 9361 - TOCJ 9371 which utilize the domestic masterings. The JRVG Completes require elaboration which time does not permit. 2)It is wholly subjective which mastering is preferable and can be argued both ways and in many cases on a title-by-title basis. All that anybody can really say with authority is that the masterings are different. 3)What is a more interesting question is why are the JRVG/RVG masterings quite different? For example, the JRVG and the RVG of Green Street are so different that if a person didn't know if would seem that they were done by 2 different masterers.

Of course your point is irrelevant since you are viewing the Board and therefore there is one user within your time frame. It is not possible to view zero within our laws of physics. Although, I grant that the laws of physics may be different in Germany.
-
...and therefore 1 user. To reiterate, it is impossible to view 0 users.
