  1. Marla, Stereo Jack has/can get this 2 CD set. That's where I got mine. Just ask Jack to special order it. It was under $20 for the set. Kevin HI Kevin, Thanks...will call Jack today and ask him to special order. You are a wealth of information! Thanks, Marla
  2. Thanks, Kevin. The only place I've found this so far (and now I'll go back and see if it is a 2 CD set) is at Crazy Jazz in the U.K. Also, thanks for your thoughts on the sound quality, too. Marla
  3. Brad, I may have just posted a question on another board and you may have answered it - the Wynton Kelly you speak of released on Fresh Sounds, with Hank Mobley - is this it: Famous Ballroom", Baltimore, MD, November 12, 1967 On a Clear Day / Interlude Vee-Jay [J] 25YD 1092/93 Hackensack - On Green Dolphin Street - Milestones - If You Could See Me Now - Speak Low / Theme - * Interpretation's by the Wynton Kelly Quartet (Vee-Jay [J] 25YD 1092/93) Any comments? I'm ready to buy today, if this is actually available. Tks, Marla
  4. Thanks for the "heads up." I've done a cut/paste of your posting to the Songbirds newsgroup - a newsgroup focusing on jazz/pop vocalists. Marla
  5. A friend once took me to a tiny storefront in Pasadena, CA that made killin' peach cobbler!!!! There was also a restaurant on Melrose Ave in L.A. called Linda's. Linda's had all of the best jazz musicians at her very "in" restaurant. Gerry Wiggins, Andy Simpkins, Ernie Andrews, Jimmy Rowles, Eric von Essen, etc. Linda's had the 2nd best (or perhaps right up there with the Pasadena store) peach cobbler ever of the non-homemade variety. Not too many jazz clubs have deeeliscious food (especially dessert). Then again, I haven't traveled all over the world, so perhaps I'm dead wrong! Marla
  6. Jazzed Media has some very good quality CDs, as so many of the smaller, growing indies. Nice to see that even with his health problems, Phil Woods is actively out there playing and recording. Last time he was at Sculler's in Boston, (with Charlap, Lynch, Gilmore, Goodwin), he musicially burned the house down! Marla
  7. Dexter with Sonny Stitt sitting in!!!! That would be very memorable for me, too! I did get to hear Mobley live (Kevin B has heard this one before) at the Angry Squire in NYC, not too long before he passed away. Mobley was with Duke Jordan. Sadly, due to his health problems, his playing was not of the quality of the 50's and 60's. He did, however, have a few great Mobley moments during the second set. I did approach him; wanted to meet him. I had a 4 x 6 black and white promo photo, which he graciously signed. He was sitting with the Barrronness, Nica and her daughter. The nice thing about this gig - so many younger Mobley fans approached him with old Blue Note LPs, asking for his autograph! Marla
  8. Heavy rotation on my IPOD/itunes right now - this new release by Jazzed Media - Phil Woods wailin' in front of the "Los Angeles Jazz Orchestra," led by pianist Christian Jacob. This CD is full of Paich's unique arrangements, with emphasis on the "Art Pepper Plus Eleven" recording. This is a live 2004 recording. Song list: Groovin' High Walkin' Shoes I've Never Been In Love Before Round Midnight Donna Lee Moanin' Anthropology Violets For Your Furs Bernie's Tune Airegin Too Close For Comfort Shaw'nuff Some of L.A.'s stellar musicians play on this recording: Steve Huffstetter, Scott Whitfield, the very talented Christian Jacob (also Musical Director for vocalist Tierney Sutton), Frank Szabo. Marla
  9. Just about to order this one, as I do not have any Rene Thomas in my collection and always LOVE to add something with Hod O'Brien. Hod, by the way, has a new one out on, I think, Resevoir - Live at Blues Alley with Peter Washington and Kenny Washington. Marla
  10. Always love listening to Lockjaw w/Johnny Griffin! Especially the Live at Minton's stuffff. Marla
  11. Same here, Allen. I've always considered myself lucky to at least be of an age during that time, where I could see/hear Philly Joe live, having missed the late 40's, all of the 50's and 60's. I was about 5 months old when Billy Holiday, Basie, Prez were all in the studio recording The Sound of Jazz - I think it was December 12, 1957? Recordings such as the Bird/Diz Town Hall find become very important to those of us who weren't around to even get a chance to hear something that signficant in person. Marla
  12. Brad, Thanks for posting the reminder/link. I clicked on the link only to find I posted something similar regarding my unfulfilled dream of having the 2 Dameronia LPs reissued as CDs (back in 12/'04). Getting old, I guess! Marla
  13. Pretty funny - I was the one there with two friends - arguing with one of them that Philly Joe could still play - both people attending with me were/are big jazz fans; one could be a bit cranky at times! Also fortunate to hear Red Garland there, too - the only time live! Allen - what did you think of Dameronia at that time? Also, Philly Joe's playing? Perhaps I had "jazz stars in my eyes/ears," but I thought he was sounding just fine and in his prime! Dan, yes, I proudly possess the CD you posted! I think I purchased it at J&R in NYC when I still lived in that neck of the woods. Thanks, Marla
  14. Thanks, Dan. I always try to have a positive outlook and say, well, something I can look forward to - though the Bird/Diz Town Hall concert looks like it might "hit the streets" sooner. The Dameronia LPs are an absolute treasure. My LPs are shot to you-know-what since I didn't take very good care of them as a teenager. Thank goodness, a friend copied them to CD-R for me, but I very much look forward to buying the "real deal" on CD if and when either/both come out. Two of the most memorable concerts I attended in NY: - Philly Joe Jones and Dameronia at the now-defunct club in the Village, Lush Life. - Dameronia after Philly Joe's passing at an Alice Tully Hall tribute to Tadd Dameron in 1988 (with Kenny Washington doing a magnificent job)! Speaking of great ideas - that entire Alice Tully Hall concert (broadcast on NPR radio stations) should be grabbed by a label for release - the Tommy Flanagan Trio, one of Charlie Rouse's last performances (gorgeous version of "If You Could See Me Now," Clifford Jordan, Walter Davis Jr., Don Sickler, Frank Wess, Larry Ridley... Marla
  15. Chuck, Is there an actual release date yet - for the Parker/Gillespie Town Hall CD? Also, would this be the very same Uptown which released two of my favorite LPs of all time - Dameronia w/Philly Joe Jones and would you know if there are any plans for a CD release? Thank you, Marla
  16. I've been enjoying checking out everyone's posts on this thread!!! In fact, whatever you are doing has worked and when I get paid on Friday, I'm going to make a big dent in my paycheck via the OJC catalog. Of course, I already have quite a few, but seeing the LP and/or CD covers for the ones I don't have in my collection makes this jazz addict want to buy, buy, buy! Keep 'em coming, as I have 2 more days 'til pay and I'm going to refer directly to what's in this thread as I buy (and leave enough money to pay some bills, get some food in the house)! Marla
  17. Thanks for the "thumbs up" suggestion. I'm looking forward to getting recordings he did on his own, as well as recordings he did with guitarist Grant Green, a favorite of mine. Regards, Marla
  18. Kevin, Happy New Year! Many thanks...I had been meaning to check out Dusty Groove, so "Now's the Time."! Marla
  19. Any source recommendations - most of the places I've looked - amazon.com, cduniverse, etc. - verrrry expensive. I'll pay it if I have to, but would sure love to be able to purchase more than one or two. At $30 each, maybe only 1. Thanks, Marla
  20. Thanks! I'll start my buying this evening and I'm guessing I'll have to go to places like musicstack.com to see if I can find LPs for those recordings never issued on CD. Marla
  21. Can all of you chime in with your favorite Baby Face Willette recording(s) and reasons why they are your favorites? I know his discography is short, but I believe he's also on at least one Grant Green recording, so that counts, too. Looking for recommendation(s) of what you perceive to be his best playing. Thanks in advance, Marla
  22. This is a beautiful CD with many memorable musical moments! I wish some of our jazz legends/heroes would do more of this type of recording - duo or trio "meetings" with other established jazz musicians. The nice thing about this type of CD is that there is a different "feel" or "flavor" to each tune. Marla
  23. Finally received and listened to "Super Standard - Super Trio." Playing is excellent. Leonhart, Barron and Foster aren't breaking any new ground but I'm a big fan of all three and they are masters of ballads, etc. Will give another listen this evening, as first go-around was with lots of interruptions. Want to pay attention to Foster's support - I think someone mentioned earlier in this thread - a concern for Foster's playing? Marla
  24. Hi Marty, Curious - was Cincotti at the Amaturo Theatre in Ft. Lauderdale? My aunt and uncle live in Boyton Beach and they've attended several jazz concerts there - my Mom performed at the Amaturo Theatre with pianist Mike Renzi in April '04. There'a also a nice jazz concert series in Palm Beach (I think) - JAMS (Jazz Arts Music Society) - at the theatre nicknamed the "Harriet." Regards, Marla
  25. I usually save the $35 and more level for japanese imports/hard-to-find jazz recordings. However, if I know the musician is getting most or all of the profit, I might spring fo a CD by a musician such as Danilo every once in a while. I just purchased a Harold Mabern Japanese import for about $35. I wanted something recent of Mabern's and I know most of his recent recorded output is on the Japanese Venus label - verrrrrry expensive, but a lot of the musicians I love are on that label and I'll continue to buy when I have the extra $. Marla
