  1. Thanks! The only problem with checking out recommended videos is that once I get to Youtube, it is addicting and 2 jazz hours later, I'm wondering why it is almost 2 a.m. and I'm not asleep yet... I also checked out some Lee Morgan, Jimmy Smith, Freddie Hubbard, Benny Green, Maynard Ferguson, Stanley Turrentine. Marla
  2. I just received my copy of the Buddy Rich at Ronnie Scott's CD. To me, the sound is excellent, probably because I have had to play the LP version since the age of 13. I didn't take very good care of my beginning jazz collection back then, so I'm thrilled to have this out on CD. The original liner notes are included, as well as new informative and well written liner notes by John LaBarbera. His notes include some great behind-the-scenes stories specific to the live recording. For any fans of the Buddy Rich Big Band, I think this is a must; some great arranging/composing by J. LaBarbera, Herbie Phillips, others. Marla
  3. I would love to see some company put out a box set of CBBB. I have in my possession several of the videos of this band (my true intro into how great this band was) and I would welcome a well organized audio companion with detailed liner notes. Is there any jazz writer/journalist with the knowledge to write detailed, informative liner notes for a box set of CBBB? Thanks, Marla
  4. Yeah, i think I'll invest in the Blakey DVD from the Jazz Icons series next. A friend previewed it for me and it is a winner, especially Lee Morgan's playing! Marla

    Red Mitchell

Thanks, Brownie. I keep a positive attitude and will add the CD to my wish list and just keeping using Google 'til it turns up with something! Marla

    Red Mitchell

Brownie, The Red Mitchell/Jimmy Rowles looks killin'! Can't seem to find this available for purchase on line. Is this one out of print? Marla
  7. Didn't Dustin Hoffman live right around Washington Square Park at that time?
  8. Welcome home, Valerie. How could I forget Renee Taylor; she made quite the entrance and exit! Glad you enjoyed last night. Marla
  9. My Mom (vocalist Rebecca Parris) was doing a gig at a restaurant/jazz venue (kinda) called Vibrato in Bel Air, CA. Front and center were Lainie Kazan, Michelle Lee and Joe Bologna. They stayed through all three sets and I did get to meet them; delightful people. Also at another table that night was actor Tony Russo. I was also at a weekly gig pianist Gerry Wiggins and the late bassist Andy Simpkins had for a while back in the 80's at Dudley Moore's restaurant, Maple Drive in Beverly Hills. Sylvester Stallone seemed to be enjoying the music one night. Another night, Sugar Ray Leonard was in and also stayed around to talk with Andy for quite a while. My guess is that it is very easy to run into famous folk in either/both Bel Air/Beverly Hills! Marla
  10. So far, only available directly from the source in England? Does anyone know if this is available for purchase on line anywhere in the U.S.? Thanks, Marla
  11. Hello, I was just talking about Ian Carr with a friend. Why is there a benefit. And for those of us outside of the London area, is there a place to send donations? Thank you, Marla
  12. I've been a fan of Grossman's ever since getting to hear him live in NYC in the 80's - one place was, I think the Grand Street Bar in Soho and the other was a night to remember - Grossman and Clarence "C Sharpe" on alto at Mikell's on the upper west side. Two of my favorite recordings where I think Grossman really shines are: the one he did with the McCoy Tyner Trio, Live at Sweet Basil's and the one he did with Barry Harris. Then again, he did a nice LP recording with the Cedar Walton trio - now I'll have to look and see if that is out on CD! I also have a video of a television performance of Grossman's at the New Morning club in Paris from around 1990/91. That's the last I heard of Grossman. I know he was here in the states a few years ago (does he still live in Italy)? Not living near NYC anymore, I'm sadly out of touch and would have done my best to get to NY had I known Grossman would be performing there. Marla
  13. Buck will be performing a CD release gig at the following location in the D.C./Maryland area: http://www.sabangrestaurant.com/jazz.html Sabang's Restaurant in Wheaton, MD on Saturday August 5 and... Blues Alley (as mentioned already) on August 21. Buck also does an annual gig at the East Coast Jazz Festival in Rockville, MD and that happens every Presidents' Day weekend. Marla
  14. Kevin, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your Father. Thanks for sharing your thoughts/memories of your Dad. Marla
  15. Mark, So sorry to hear you lost your friend who was so young. Thinking of you... Marla
  16. Great! Thanks for the heads up - Freddie Webster is legendary and I've not heard much from recordings featuring him. I'll be tuning in tonight and if I can get freecorder to work, will try to tape it on to my hard drive. Marla
  17. Benny Green will be at the Harriet (sp?) Gilman theatre in West Palm Beach tomorrow night - not sure who is playing with him. Marla
  18. Down here on the south shore of Massachusetts, we had a ton of rain but fortunately, to the best of my knowledge, not much flooding. Today, mostly sunny and around 68 degrees. Not complaining! Marla
  19. The 3 people and two dogs living in the house are probably the most unusual items in the house! Marla
  20. And with that last post, I made it to "Veteran Groover" status!!! A good day here on the south shore of Massachusetts. Taking advance orders on Look, Stop and Listen? Marla
  21. If all goes as planned, the 2nd Dameronia on Uptown "Look Stop and Listen" will be out later this year. Chuck, You have made my day!!!! Marla
  22. Agree with this statement 100 percent. Certainly one of the most unique/identifiable of arrangers/composers. I do think Lovano did a very loving tribute to Dameron with 52nd Street Themes. Yeah, the two Uptown Dameronia recordings are on my wish list for CD release and no, I'm not holding my breath! There was also a wonderful concert (I was in attendance) at Alice Tully Hall in 1988 and it was a tribute to Dameron. Walter Davis Jr., Kenny Washington, Charlie Rouse, Tommy Flanagan - all the guys individually and as "Dameronia" - played beautifully. Probably one of the most memorable jazz concerts I ever attended. Marla
  23. Found this interview with William Gottlieb at Jerry Jazz Musician website: http://66.51.167.104/mainHTML.cfm?page=i-view2.html Marla
  24. Very sad news....certainly one of my favorite photographers and I am glad Gottlieb wrote the story leading up to the famous pics (inside and outside Minton's Playhouse). Here's the link; I believe this was originally published in Down Beat, though I could be wrong: http://memory.loc.gov/music/gottlieb/wgpubs/1151r.jpg Marla
  25. I also love King's Dreamlands Vols. 1 & 2 recordings. Intimate and swinging. And this one: w/the Metropole Orchestra Marla
