  1. I was pleased to see that Nancy King's new CD, Live at the Jazz Standard (with pianist Fred Hersch) is available for sale/preorder now), though I believe the street date is May 9. Nancy is a fave of mine and I'm glad to see that she has a recording coming out on MaxJazz. Guitarist Russell Malone, if I'm not mistaken, will also have a new "Live at the Jazz Standard" CD out on MaxJazz sometime soon...perhaps June? Marla
  2. Happy Birthday, Mark! I'm glad we've met via organissimo and wish you the bestest and most funnest of b-days! Marla
  3. Mark, Thanks - that was the pic - with Eldridge, Hill, Monk, McGhee outside of Minton's. Marla
  4. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...Minton's. I'm having a brain lapse when trying to post and wanted to post the other famous Minton's pic where Howard McGhee, Monk, Teddy Hill and Roy Eldridge are standing outside of Minton's in 1947. Long live Minton's (whenever it reopens, that is)!!! Marla
  5. Yeah, I believe John's is between Seventh Avenue South and 6th Ave (closer to 7th Ave S.) and it is fantastic. And after John's you can take a very brief walk around the corner to #15 Barrow Street and see the site of the famous Cafe Bohemia (now a college hangout beer kinda place). Marla
  6. Marla, Have you listened to Fred Hersch's new Live at the Bimhuis in Amsterdam? It's wonderful. Ron, Thanks for the recommendation. I am ashamed to say I only have Fred as a sideman. I'll give a look-see and perhaps purchase! I do know I enjoyed his set at the Vanguard several years back. Marla
  7. I LOVE his rendition of this on Dynasty!! Thanks for the heads up regarding this recording. Maybe next paycheck... Marla
  8. - Swing, Swang, Swingin' - Alto Madness - and Sonny Clark's Cool Struttin' for some of my favorite Jackie McLean! Nobody played "A House is Not a Home" like Jackie McLean. R.I.P. Marla
  9. Last time in D.C. I stayed at The River Inn (Foggy Bottom). Apartments converted to a hotel and the rooms were excellent. I think the room rate at that time was $149 and I spent an extra $35 at check-in and upgraded my room to what was essentially a really nice 1 bedroom apartment. There is paid parking at the River Inn and a small restaurant with limited hours. Less than a 10 minute walk to the Watergate Hotel - at the Watergate, there's a mini mall kinda thing with a small supermarket, liquor store, cafe/bakery. Loved the River Inn and the area, which was quite residential. http://www.theriverinn.com Marla
  10. Gotta go with On Green Dolphin Street and add Tadd Dameron's If You Could See Me Now Marla
  11. I'm not a musician, but I've been to quite a few recording sessions. My mom, vocalist Rebecca Parris, and the guys always seem to be fairly relaxed in the studio. Maybe it is because they've performed together so much that it is easy to get into a groove, etc. I think it also might have something to do with the seriously strong coffee and espresso that the studio owner has going most of the day! So, as the outsider or observer, I think because of the rapport between the musicians, both musically and friendship-wise, everyone can be somewhat relaxed -even knowing that what they are putting down on acetate ;-) is going to be a permanent record of the day's events at some point! I seem to remember musicians being more on edge at the final mixing sessions. Marla
  12. I'm looking forward to her duet with one of my favorite jazz vocalists, Nancy King. Kudos to Karrin for including Nancy on her recording. Nancy is one of the great not-very-well-known jazz vocalists. Also looking forward to Nancy's release with Fred Hersch, also due out in April on MaxJazz. Marla
  13. Confused here. Horace has a new website. Horace's autobiography is out (I have my copy). I can't find any old discussions to become enlightened. I think the website looks great. Can someone help me out here - maybe with a link to the old discussion? Thanks, Marla
  14. 32 degrees here and cloudy outside of Bahstan, MA as I get ready to start my workday. Rumor has it we will have temps in the 50s by the weekend. Hardly any snow left on the ground. Marla
  15. Agree with Guy - no personality to the place, but no problems there either. The place was pretty dead the night I went to hear George Coleman with Harold Mabern, John Webber and Joe Farnsworth, but the music was great. Employees at Iridium were nice enough. My 2 fave places in NYC are the Vanguard (for its history, though Lorraine Gordon is hard to take sometimes) and the Jazz Standard. Nice vibe at both places. Despite Lorraine's less-than-friendly personality, I'd give her a tip of the hat for keeping the Vanguard alive and cookin'!!! Marla
  16. Just received my copy of Let's Get to the Nitty Gritty today, Foreword (brief) and all! Looking forward to the end of my work day to begin reading. Marla
  17. Thanks! As of 4:40 EST, power is still on, but I have that thermos of coffee just in case. OK, Mom's boyfriend checked outside and there's about 11 inches of snow out there with drifts twice the size. I would take a pic and scan, but I still haven't figured out how to post a pic. I am a "techno-duh" when it comes to that stuff. I would love to see others pics posted here for those also affected by the snow. Catesta, what is the snow count in Garden City? Also, StereoJack, any snow news from there? Heard Revere got about 18 inches of snow. Happy snow to all! Marla
  18. I'll keep you posted. I've got guys scattered from JFK Airport to Suffolk County. Thanks! Weather Channel officially posted the Blizzard and Coast Flood warnings. Oh, and if I don't respond, it is because our power is down (not sure if I can get organissimo through my cell phone mobile web feature). Marla
  19. Well, I hope you guys don't get hit too hard out in Garden City. Will be interesting to hear folks' reports late tonight and for us in New England, tomorrow morning and afternoon! Marla
  20. My Mom's boyfriend already got a sub for his Sunday brunch gig in Boston (we live about 35 miles south of Boston. Glad you didn't have to drive. Marla
  21. You must be out east a ways? I'm in Garden City and it's been snowing on and off since around 5:00 PM. The grass is covered, but it's not anyhwere near sticking to the roads yet. I haven't been to "Old Country Road" in a long time!
  22. We're ready - plenty of food in the house, a snow blower, shovels. Now, if the power will stay on this time, we'll be in good shape! S'posed to hit outside of the Boston area sometime after midnight. I'm near the Cape and it ain't gonna be pretty. Then again, it will be pretty; just a pain in the you-know-what! Marla
  23. I think the Boston area is looking at as much, if not more than NYC. Living near the Cape, sometimes we miss getting the heavy duty snowfall. Then again, I have some pics of some serious snow surrounding our house! Last weather report I saw was calling for 8 -14 inches of snow. The other drag is that almost every time we've had either a snowstorm or some kind of high winds in the past 6 months, we've had power outages. Not fun... Marla
  24. Besides seeing/hearing Buddy Rich's band and Sarah Vaughan (separate occasions) at the Gate, I attended a tribute/benefit for Papa Jo Jones w/Philly Joe, Max Roach, Freddie Waits, so many others. Marla
