  8. well i've been spinnin' my copy in the office all day! now i'm spinnin' it at home! what a great cd!!!! nice work guys!!! (i think even yanow would agree! ) now where should we send our liner notes to get them autographed by the band?!!!
  9. I hope nobody minds me quoting myself, but Hunting the spirits inside them on Music & Arts featuring Golia, one Joelle Leandre and one Ken Filiano is a monster record. Last time I checked Music & Arts CDs were available at Cadense for some laughable amount of $$. Dave Taylor is featured on excellent CD by Absolute Ensemble called Absolution (Enja Winkelmann): http://www.enjarecords.com/cd.php?nr=ENJ-9394 Highly recommended if you are interested in exploring combination of 20th century academic orchestral music with improvisation. Besides Taylor this disc features Denman Maroney on impressive prepared piano. ← finally found this puppy used ($4.99!) what a steal! and you didn't mention that they did hendrix's "purple haze", WOW!!! thanks for the recommendation! ← I thought "Purple haze" was the most kitch and the least successful of the tunes here. Still quite entertainig - only pales in comparison to other tracks on this really outstanding record. Let us know what you think of it. ← i thought the entire cd was quite good. my wife was in the car when it was on and she asked me what kind of music it was. i said "uh..............................." so what kind of music would you call it "new wave classical"? "classical jazz"?

  15. up for those to read with the blue harlem thread. (--note all clem posts have been deleted).
  16. i missed this thread the first time around but found it when i did a search regarding the "proper boxes" - daedalus is selling a bunch of them. what an excellent discussion! i too am torn by the copyright issue i buy from mosaic, world, cdbaby, chuck, amazon, deepdiscount, cduniverse, maria schneider, djangos and many others. but i also buy from half.com (no new artist royalties generated there!) i haven't bought any proper boxes yet, but i did buy some spanish blue notes from dusty groove 'cause i really wanted to hear the music and it was not available here. and lets face it, $18.99 for a new cd is pretty outrageous. anyway, i am sure the debate will continue---curious that clem deleted all his posts!

    Steve Lacy

i am really surprised that seve lacy's "Snips" has never been discussed! this 2-disc set is steve's first solo concert in america. it was recorded in march of 1976 in a new york city "loft". steve is amazing and the music is first rate! the recording sounds to my ears like someone put a tape recorder on a table and let it go, so there is the occasional crinkle and some audience noise. it is not offensive at all (see my jason moran bandstand thread for my rantings about bad sound). for me, the way it was recorded actually made me feel like i was there! steve even "raps" a little on some of the cuts! in "hooky" he implores "don't go to school, don't go to school!" and he plays like no one else! if you are a lacy fan, i think this release is a must own!
  18. once in zayre's (a now defunct department store) i saw a sale sign advertising, "Bikinis -- half off"
  19. -oh what the heck - i decided to post my horrible guesses anyway. don't laugh (too hard). BFT#28 Well, here are my guesses and they are just that! Thanks Marty for a terrific BFT!!! 1 - Sounds like Bechet to me. I love the number – SNAPPY!! 2 - Perhaps Getz or Desmond? Has a Spanish feel to it which I like! 3 - Who is playing that piano? Is it Jamal? Good stuff! 4 - Barney Kessel? 5 - No idea, but nice. Perhaps Kenny Dorham on trumpet? 6 - Love that big band sound! Is it Duke? 7 - Help??!!! 8 - More big band!!! 9 - Milt Jackson? MJQ? 10 - Me like!!!! 11 - Lee Morgan? Oh, I am not very good at this! 12 – Hmmmmmmmmm? 13 – don’t know. 14 – don’t know 15 – This REALLY swings!!! I DIG it!!! 16 – 18 - don’t know
