  1. I love the pre-Chuck Mangione Chuck Mangione. The Jazz Brothers, Hey Baby!, Spring Fever and Recuerdo are all good listens and I especially enjoy those that feature Sal Nistico.
  2. I just checked on the price for the set today and it is now listed for $39.99. I'm glad I was able to get one and it seemed to be listed long enough for a lot of people to take advantage. It'a a great set.
  3. Ray Charles - Blues + Jazz (2-CD)
  4. What's the word from Oldies?
  5. I find that there are a couple or more albums worth of material on Joe Henderson's "The Milestone Years" that are pretty much unlistenable to me. I got it at such a nice price that I couldn't even buy all of the single albums worth of material I do enjoy without spending more than I paid for the entire 8-CD box set so I'm holding on to it. Ronnie Scott's 4-CD "Boppin' With Scott" didn't do much for me but I only gave it one listen. It may be one of those that grows on me when revisited.
  6. Laurie- Thanks for sharing some of Art's music likes and dislikes. Just as easily as you could write pages about what music Art liked and didn't, I could easily read them. I find the insight fascinating. It doesn't surprise me that Art was able to plug in and appreciate such a wide variety of musical styles and musical artists. He played with such a palpable sense of emotion, feeling, presence and passion that you know there had to be something behind it. Beside his own colorful life experiences, being open and appreciative of such a wide variety of music shows a sensitivity and empathy toward whatever feelings or experiences would lend themselves to inspiring the wide spectrum of emotions different kinds of music would offer. A lot of guys could play, but to the degree and regularity that Art seemed to give of himself when he played, he was pretty unique and stands tall in a much smaller group of guys.
  7. You're not alone, the exact same thing shows up on my order. (It just started showing this today.)
  8. I picked both of these up myself. Looking forward to hearing them. Did you have any trouble adding to your order? No, I had no problems finding additional CDs to add to my order! Actually, I placed my initial order online July 5th. On the morning of the 7th I called customer service directly to see if I could add to my initial order. I thought I'd give it a shot but I had already resigned myself to placing a 2nd order if they said no. The call was kind of weird. At first the rep shot me down saying it couldn't be done because I placed the initial order online and now I was calling in. I said, "OK" and then she told me to wait while she checked on something. She then shot me down again saying it wasn't in a place where she could add on to it. I said, "OK" and then she asked me to wait again while she checked on something. She then came back on and said that she would be able to add onto the order. I gave her the titles, she confirmed what I gave her, she gave me a new total and said it would be under the same order number. Now I'll have to wait and see what happens because orders that are called in apparently don't show online. I don't see that they've charged my bank card anything yet and the site shows my order is still processing.
  9. I ordered all I dared to order from the Fantasy warehouse sale and stopped after 9 titles having pared down a list that was easily 3 times that size. Some below the radar titles I saw that I'd recommend: John Wright - Mr. Soul Jon Eardley - From Hollywood To New York Jon Eardley - The Jon Eardley Seven
  10. The Fantasy warehouse clearance sale at Oldies.com was so good I had to go back for more. Fortunately, I was able to tack these onto my previous order so I didn't have to pay a shipping charge again. Various - The Birdlanders, Vol. 1 (Al Cohn, J.J. Johnson, Kai Winding, Milt Jackson, Henri Renaud, Duke Jordan, Percy Heath, Gene Ramey, Charlie Smith, Lee Abrams.) Various - The Birdlanders, Vol. 2 (Al Cohn, Kai Winding, Oscar Pettiford, Henri Renaud, Tal Farlow, Gene Ramey, Max Roach, Denzil Best.) Jimmy Heath - Swamp Seed Charles Kynard - Legends Of Acid Jazz
  11. Via the huge Fantasy-related titles sale currently at Oldies.com. ($30.00 and change delivered!) Jimmy Woods - Conflict Jimmy Woods - Awakening!! Sonny Stitt - Stitt's Bits: Bebop Recordings 1949-1952 (3-CD) Red Rodney - Red Rodney Quintets Shorty Baker & Doc Cheatam - Shorty And Doc
  12. The same thing happened to me. I provided my email on 6/29 and still haven't heard a peep. Nothing in my junk email folder either. Maybe I'll try it again. Edit - My predictions for a top 10 or many that will be among my top 10: The Godfather The Godfather II Amadeus Apocalypse Now The Shawshank Redemption Goodfellas Some Like It Hot Gladiator Spirited Away The Bourne Trilogy (Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum)
  13. Baby Face Willette - Stop And Listen Art Pepper - Complete TV Studio Recordings
  14. I'll be getting on board as well. From the song samples, it sounds like another winner. The description indicates that 2/3 of the music here has never been released before. With 31 tracks, that would make about 10 songs that have been released before. Does anyone know what songs they might be? Two of them should be the Warne Marsh tunes (12&16) from disc one and the two songs (4&5) from disc three that were identified from the Hollywood All Star Sessions. Can anyone here identify what else on this set has been released before? (see post #36 for the set's discography) Edit: It appears several of the numbers from disc 1 are from "Surf Ride", "Art Pepper Quartet" and "Discovery Sessions".

  16. I've been looking but I haven't been finding.
  17. Marie Bryant on a couple of numbers from "Jammin' The Blues". I don't know if you want to count Jimmy Rushing when Pres played with Count Basie.
  18. How do you get discs for $5.00 a pop? Is that before or after shipping? I have an account with BMG and the current deal is 80% off. Once you factor in shipping that runs to $6.59 per disc.
  19. Wald sounds like a pot-stirrer to me. His shakey premise is predicated by the assumption that rock-n-roll would have stayed the same had the Beatles not shown up on the music scene. It's undeniable that the Beatles were a huge influence on music but how and why should such an accusation be placed soley on their shoulders even if there were some truth to what he's saying? Was there no one else who dared to sully the "purity" of rock-n-roll? He then goes on to insult and dismiss artists who created a lot of good, if not great, music. I think it's a bunch of baloney.
  20. I re-set the cable/modem box and now Hotmail seems to be accessable again. We'll see if it holds up. (fingers crossed)
  21. Anyone here having problems accessing Hotmail? The last several days it seems to have a mind of its own and only works when it feels like it. I can never predict when I might be able to get through to Hotmail but most of the time it fails and I get the message, "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". I'm not having problems accessing anything else.

  23. You're not alone, I very much dislike the name and would have advised against it. While I want to believe that these releases are being put out there to preserve Art's legacy and to expose a lot of Art's fantastic performances that were never released, the name gives the impression, whether true or not, that it's only about money and milking what is now a "commodity". Having gotten that off my chest as well, it's really the only fault I can find with these releases. I think they've been great and I'll continue to support the cause and buy them.
  24. I'm guessing that may be the reason Best Buy is mispricing the set thinking it's the 2-CD set. I ordered and received two of the 6-CD box sets at that price.
  25. I just got this press release via email. It looks like we'll be seeing a new 3-CD set of "Unreleased Art" on June 23rd. The first three releases were all excellent so I'm looking forward to this one. New 3-CD set of "Unreleased Art"
