  1. Apparently everything in my July 5th order. (although they are all still listed as available for sale) Jimmy Woods - Conflict Jimmy Woods - Awakening! Red Rodney - Red Rodney Quintets Shorty Baker/Doc Cheatham - Shorty & Doc Various - Birdlanders, v.1 Various - Birdlanders, v. 2 Jimmy Heath - Swamp Seed Charles Kynard - Legends Of Acid Jazz My July 5th order is still "processing" "waiting for back-ordered products." I placed a second order for 4 discs on July 25th and have already received notice that it shipped. I've called twice on the 7/5 order and got nothing that shed any light on anything. I've emailed twice regarding the status (albeit one was only 24 hours ago) and didn't get a response. I'm not back from vacation until August 3rd so I will give them until then. If I don't hear anything by then I guess I'll have to insist I talk with a manager and try to get some kind of concrete answer. Is everything I ordered out of print? I've seen others receive some of the titles I ordered. You'd think I'd at least get a partial order that should have shipped by now.
  2. Ordered them via Oldies, hope I get them. Alan Broadbent will be new to me. Gene Ammons - Jammin' In Hi-Fi With Gene Ammons Wilbur Ware - The Chicago Sound Alan Broadbent - Personal Standards Alan Broadbent - Pacific Standard Time
  3. Yea, I probably should have let the call slide. I'm going on vacation tomorrow and won't be around to get the mail for 9 days anyway.
  4. Still waiting too for my order from the 5th. I called them today and was pretty underwhelmed with a disinterested customer service rep. All that I was able to wrench out of her was that something, possibly an invoice(?), was supposedly printed out in the warehouse today which supposedly means that they are pulling the order today. The order supposedly is set to ship today or Monday. Judging from the customer service rep's indifference, I'm not especially confident in what I was told but I will hope for the best. I didn't think I'd dare ask what items might or might not ship. So what do I do to reward such stellar service? I placed an order for 4 more discs! It's a sickness, I know.
  5. As an audience member, I think a musicians leaving the stage should be an infrequent exception and never a rule. I recall a live performance where a musician didn't even leave the stage but he had totally checked out mentally. He played the entire set but his eyes rarely left the TV over the bar where a baseball game was playing. At first I found it amusing but it detracted from the performance for me. The same holds true for me when someone leaves the stage. For me, whether intended or not, it signals disrespect and disinterest. I think musicians should grab a chair or a stool when they're not playing and during the other's solos, become part of what is hopefully an interested and attentive audience.
  6. Does anyone here have any thoughts on Freddie Hubbard - "The Artistry of Freddie Hubbard". I initially dismissed this title upon seeing it thinking it was a compilation disc but then discovered it was a stand alone release sandwiched between "Ready For Freddie" and "Hub-Tones" both of which I enjoy quite a bit. The sound samples still leave me sitting a bit on the fence. Is the disc more compelling than the sound samples might lead me to believe?
  7. You're the second person who didn't receive 2 of the titles I ordered. That's already almost 25% of my order and it looks like the fill rate is hovering at around 50% for a lot of people reporting back on what was ordered/received so I can probably expect I'll be missing out on a few more titles. I was really hoping I would get both of the Jimmy Woods discs. To a lesser extent, the Stitt would be nice to have as well but I'd be less disappointed about not getting that one. Are these items considered "cut-outs" or "limited" which supposedly won't be kept on back order for 30 days?
  8. I'm still waiting to hear anything on my order of the 5th (& 7th) as well. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm not going to get anything either. It only takes 1 disc to send a partial order, did I pick nine unavailable titles? I'll give it another day or two and if I don't hear anything, I'll give them a call to check on the status.
  9. Don't know about RA but is that woman in the Toto video wearing the red dress that chick from "Dirty Dancing"? (Not Jennifer Grey)
  10. In looking at the Oldies site, it doesn't appear that they are removing any titles that have been appearing on people's not-filled list. Is that a sign of hope that the non-filled portions of peoples orders will eventually be filled since they are still showing that they are listed for sale or is it more likely that Oldies doesn't know what stock they can get their hands on and aren't updating the listings in the sale?
  11. I only ordered nine titles so I'm hoping for a better fill percentage than you received. I see from someone's earlier post that they did not receive 2 of the titles that I ordered so we're already looking at almost a 25% no-fill rate if it holds true for me as well. I'm still waiting (im)patiently to hear or see anything on my order. Maybe I set myself back when I added some titles to my order 2 days after my initial order on the 5th. Any day now, right? (fingers crossed)
  12. 1. Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) 2. Red House 3. Tie: Hey Joe, The Wind Cries Mary Someone mentioned covers. I'd have to go with Stevie Ray Vaughan's versions of Voodoo Chile and Little Wing. I actually like SRV's version of Little Wing more than I like Hendrix's.
  13. The Odd Couple Jonny Quest Theme for Jonny Quest Here's a nice workout for the trumpeters out there: The Green Hornet The Green Hornet Theme The Mod Squad
  14. As much as I love my jazz collection, sometimes I think the hunt is more fun than the actual acquisition. It's kind of an exciting buzz discovering, hunting, searching, finding and then the anticipation of waiting for the CDs to arrive. I love hearing the new music but once I have it in my hands, it isn't long before my mind is pondering other possible buys. I think I need to ponder what it is that makes me feel more excited about the hunt than owning and listening to what I have in hand. I easily have hundreds of titles that would be like new to me when I gave them a spin. I have to somehow transition my brain to embrace that concept and cut back on the new acquisitions.
  15. Very dry and surprisingly cool in the Twin Cities suburbs. It's currently only 61° with an expected high of around 63° which will be a record low for this date since the late 30's. We'd gladly take several days of that rain others here seem to be getting.
  16. If you live anywhere near a Half-Price Book store, you should really get on their mailing (or email) list. A couple of times a year they offer coupons good for 20%, 30%, 40% and 50% off an item. Over the last couple of days I picked up some great deals on some still-sealed CDs. Billy Taylor Trio With Ed Thigpen & Earl May Elmo Hope Trio - Complete Studio Recordings: The Master Tapes (4-CD, includes "New Faces, New Sounds", "Meditations", "Elmo Hope Trio", "Homecoming", "Sounds From Riker's Island", "Here's Hope", "High Hope", "The Final Sessions") I've had my eye on this one and it's been sitting on the shelf at Half-Price Books for the last several months. I couldn't pass it up at 40% off. John Benson Brooks - Folk Jazz U.S.A. (Contains "Folk Jazz U.S.A. and "Alabama Concierto" featuring the likes of Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Art Farmer and Cannonball Adderley) Grant Green - Organ Trio And Quartet (Contains GG's "Iron City" and Sam Lazar's "Space Flight")
  17. I haven't reached the saturation point to the degree that I've quit browsing for and buying new music but I'm starting to seriously feel that way more and more over time. I've gotten a lot better about not picking things up just because I'm kinda interested in them, reserving purchases for things I like a lot. Unfortunately, that still allows for a lot of buys. Even now, about 16 new titles made their way or are in the works for making their way into my collection over the last month or two. I've encountered too many good sales. When discs are only $5 to $6, how can you not pick up at least a few? Maybe a solution would be to get a family member to randomly select a disc or two from my collection, put it them a mailer and stick them in the mailbox once or twice a week.
  18. Bummer! Two of my nine picks are on the list of items you didn't receive. I ordered the 5th, added on some titles the 7th and my order is still processing/waiting for back ordered items.
  19. No, I wouldn't spend $40.00 on it. Buy it from a marketplace seller on Amazon.com. Newbury Comics is selling a new one there for $15.99 as of this posting.
  20. From a poster on the AAJ board, the kid was Frank "Sugar Chile" Robinson. Here's some more information on him. Frank "Sugar Chile" Robinson His AllMusic.com bio: http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&s...dvfyxq8gldde~T1AllMusic bio
  21. Did this little kid grow up to be anyone we might know? Little kid makin' "Caldonia" work for him.
  22. Jazzbo and Chuck, Just to get an idea of a potential time line, when did you guys place your orders?
  23. Got it to work. So far my top 10 (according to their pairing choices of course) are: 1. Amadeus 2. Boogie Nights 3. The Deer Hunter 4. A History Of Violence 5. The Passion Of The Christ 6. Star Trek (2009) 7. The Italian Job 8. Momento 9. Pulp Fiction 10. Napoleon Dynamite The next 10: 11. 3:10 To Yuma (What the...?) 12. The Green Mile 13. The Ring 14. Apocalypse Now 15. Road To Perdition 16. Ray 17. Billy Eliot 18. Spiderman 19. Little Miss Sunshine 20. Collateral Interesting. There are a lot of picks there that never would have made my top 20.
  24. Another Ray Charles title I just became aware of. Ray Charles - Soul Brothers/Soul Meeting (2-CD w/Milt Jackson)
  25. This can be gotten rather inexpensively used, Ray Charles & Milt Jackson, "Soul Brothers/Soul Meeting" (Atlantic): Thanks for the suggestion. I will look for this one. I want to thank you for this recommendation as well. I listened to the samples and knew almost immediately I wanted to pick this one up. I didn't realize it was a 2-CD set and found a nice deal on a used copy. In addition to this, I picked up Charles' 2-CD "Blues + Jazz" (w/Count Basie Orchestra) so I can have a little Ray Charles fest in the near future. :tup
