  1. Yet another sign I have too many CDs. I was going to check out buying the John Patton Select and referred to my CD list to see if I had any of the individual discs contained in the set when I discovered I already owned it!!
  2. Argh! I contacted Keenzo and the Brookmeyer is a no-go so I'm assuming the other titles are as well. The hunt goes on.
  3. I tried ordering the Johnny Richards from them yesterday when it was still listed as "low stock." Unfortunately, a telephone call to them today revealed that it actually was not in stock (and my order was automatically cancelled). I'd suggest that anyone else placing an order make a similar call. For what it's worth, the Johnny Richards was listed as "out of stock" when I checked the the other titles that are noted in my previous post. (still listed as "low stock") I just checked my bank and an authorization has been made on my account for the amount of the Bob Brookmeyer Select I ordered yesterday.
  4. For those who are still searching, as of earlier today, the following OOP Selects are still available ("low stock") via Keenzo.com for $43.71 + $5.53 shipping as was mentioned in an earlier post: Bud Shank / Bob Cooper Bob Brookmeyer Dexter Gordon John Patton
  5. Stop wondering and GET IT. Great set. I'm tempted but I'm not a real big trios guy (with some exceptions) and CD money is getting tight for me so I decided to forgo it. The Pacific Jazz piano trios set kind of fell into the "nice to have" vs. the "I really want it" category.
  6. Thanks for the tip, I ordered the Bob Brookmeyer set. It still shows "low stock" on the web site so I'm assuming one will be on its way. At $49.24 shipped, it's still a slightly better deal than I would have gotten from Mosaic if they were still able to sell it. Now I just have to cancel my "backordered" Brookmeyer from DeepDiscount.com which I'm guessing probably wouldn't ever materialize.
  7. Of the Selects I haven't already purchased, the Bob Brookmeyer was the only one still out there that I was interested in enough to want to buy it. I was going to wait a while until it hit "running low". (I decided I could do without the Pacific Jazz piano trios set I was thinking about earlier.) I ordered one through DeepDiscount.com and they took my order with the following caveat: "This item is temporarily out of stock and will ship to you as soon as product becomes available. We will email you soon with an estimated delivery date. You will not be charged for this item until it is shipped." It doesn't look good but I'll keep my fingers crossed.
  8. I wouldn't want to be without the Bennie Green and the Curtis Amy Selects, two under the radar kind of artists. Both sets are excellent and I'd recommend grabbing them while you still have the chance. I'm wondering if I should grab that Pacific Jazz piano trios set.
  9. Heckuva guitar player too.
  10. Yet another promotion I couldn't pass by. My order: David X. Young's Jazz Loft: 1954-1965 (2-CD) Harry Allen - Christmas In Swingtime Harper Brothers - Artistry Outer Limits, Vol. 3 (3-DVD)
  11. Oscar Peterson has played with quite a roster of greats.
  12. World's Records
  13. In today's mailbox: Winard Harper - Trap Dancer Winard Harper - Be Yourself This second title can be had dirt cheap but I don't think that it's an indication that quality is lacking. I enjoyed it and thought it was a pretty nice disc.
  14. Up with addition and price drops.
  15. There's nothing wrong with settling for "enjoyable". I'd agree, I don't think it's essential listening but if you enjoy George Wallington, Donald Byrd, Jackie McLean or some combination of the three, (not even taking into account Frank Foster or Jimmy Cleveland on the 2nd session) it's definitely worth checking out.
  16. The second I saw the line-up on the disc I couldn't pass it up. (It didn't hurt that I was going through a Donald Byrd and a Jackie McLean thing at the time.) Prior to finding this I had been listening to the Wallington sessions with Donald Byrd and Phil Woods. (The New York Scene and Jazz For The Carriage Trade) I picked up a different version of the disc, a 2-CD set which includes alternate takes for the Cafe Bohemia session as well as a 2nd release, "George Wallington Showcase". (see below) I really dug it and think it is well worth checking out. Complete Live at the Café Bohemia AMG review: The people behind the Lone Hill Jazz label deserve some kind of humanitarian award for reissuing two of George Wallington's very best albums: Live! At Cafe Bohemia (recorded on September 9, 1955, and subsequently issued on both the Progressive and Prestige labels) and George Wallington Showcase (recorded in a studio for Blue Note on May 12, 1954). The band heard at the Bohemia — trumpeter Donald Byrd and alto saxophonist Jackie McLean in front of Wallington, Paul Chambers, and Art Taylor — had the power and depth of ensembles led by Charles Mingus and Art Blakey during the mid- to late '50s. The Showcase session, using Quincy Jones arrangements, resulted in music that was equally inspired and exhilarating, if at times a bit more reined in. A magnificent front line of trumpeter Dave Burns, trombonist Jimmy Cleveland, and saxophonists Frank Foster and Danny Banks was securely backed by Wallington, Oscar Pettiford, and Kenny Clarke. Banks, a capable baritone saxophonist, doubled at times on the flute, intensifying the James Moody-like aspect already suggested by the presence of Burns and Pettiford. This marvelous session acts as an organic counterweight to the sizzling live date. The inclusion of alternate takes from both albums adds ballast and excitement to a superb and satisfying stash of vintage hard bop.

  19. Is there anyone in the upper-midwest area who might be interested in a Can-Am cabinet? I have a black, 2-drawer unit that I might be interested in selling. It holds 540 CDs (or 240 DVDs) and the dimensions are 37.75" wide, 14.5" high and 20" deep. It has a key lock with 2 keys and would also come with the drawer dividers and adjustable back-stops. It is in used/like new condition. The cost of buying this unit with the drawer dividers from Can-Am (before the pricey shipping costs) is $507.00. I was thinking of offering it for $375.00 - $400.00. I won't ship it, you'd have to pick it up. I live in the Minneapolis/St. Paul suburbs in Minnesota. I suppose if you lived relatively close, I could deliver it. This picture gives you an idea of what it would look like. (please note, I have the 2-drawer unit, not the 3-drawer and mine wouldn't have the wheels) The unit I have is pictured in the upper right-hand corner of the link below (except mine is black) with includes additional information if you're interested in checking it out further. Can-Am cabinet picture and specs. Why not pick up a great storage solution for your CDs? If you're not local, you could make a nice trip of it, maybe go see the Mall Of America, catch some jazz at the Dakota or other venues, check out one of the zoos, theaters or museums. PM me with any questions or if you're curious or interested.
  20. In today's mail: Bunny Berigan - Swingin' High
  21. Excellent disc Paps, one of my favorites of his. It's a Lester Young day for me today as well. In the mailbox today: Complete Savoy Recordings Ordered today because I need to compliment vol. 1 and I found a new/sealed copy dirt cheap: A Fine Romance, Vol. 2 I think I have a lot of this stuff elsewhere but it's nice to have it all together.
  22. The Don Sleet and the John Wright discs currently listed are both very nice dates that fly under the radar. Someone out there should definitely check them out.
  23. I just finished reading Lewis Porter's "Lester Young" and noted that Pres expressed admiration for Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford, Dick Haymes and Kay Starr. Lyrics were very important to him. He stated, "A musician should know the lyrics of the songs he plays. A lot of musicians that play nowadays don't know the lyrics of the songs. That way they're just playing the changes [chords]. That's why I like records by singers when I'm listening at home. "
