Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?

Complete Blue Note Elvin Jones Sessions -
I posted this less than 4 months ago and I've already changed my mind. Since then, I was able to get copies of the Elvin Jones (owned several months and I haven't even finished listening to it yet) and the Gerry Mulligan. I'm really not that interested in the Gillespie or the Weston any longer. Right now I think I'd be interested in: 1. Charles Tolliver Select 2. Andrew Hill Select #16 I was thinking I'd like the Grachan Moncur III Select but I think I would be just as happy spending half the money and getting the 3 remaining Moncur and McLean titles (I already have "Evolution") which would give me everything but about 8 songs that appear on the Select. Four months from now I'll probably have changed my mind again. Maybe I should just settle for being content with what I have.

I suspect that many of those are actually not in stock--I called about the Richards, and it's not. I'd recommend contacting them regarding stock status before--or even after--placing an order. The good news is that they don't charge your credit card until they ship, if I recall correctly. Unfortunately, when you put any of those items in your cart, you'll see the following message: "This item is temporarily out of stock and will ship to you as soon as product becomes available. We will email you soon with an estimated delivery date. You will not be charged for this item until it is shipped." I'm guessing that they're never going to become available. They were my first Brookmeyer no-go.

I've been keeping an eye on that retailer and those copies are now gone. They apparently had 9 for sale ("buy it now") and 8 of those were still available when I became aware of them. They had the set selling a bit cheaper on their web-site so I purchased one there. I see that one buyer snapped up the remaining 7 copies, most likely to re-sell them for a nice profit. I hope everything pans out on this buy. My fingers are crossed and the pieces look to be falling into place. I see that it's no longer listed on their web-site. The Ebay auction said they had 8 copies for sale and the speculative buyer was only able to get 7 of them so I'm hoping the other one he was not able to get was the one I ordered off their web-site. I've received 2 emails from the retailer confirming the order and confirming verification of payment. I was informed that it usually ships 2-5 business days after they confirm payment (which was the 11th) and that they'd send a shipment confirmation email. We'll see what happens.

My Curtis Amy is ordered from Movie Mars - no word on shipping after 2 days, but they still have it on Marketplace (price increased from approx $44 to $75). Let's hope we're lucky Tom! Similar situation here (different seller) with the Pacific Jazz Trios set... anxiously awaiting some kind of shipping/payment notification! Ordered on Thursday it should have been confirmed by yesterday evening, one would guess... I'm in the the same boat with the Bob Brookmeyer set. After one order no-go, I placed orders at two other under-the-radar retailers. (nice prices at both) Certain signs are good that at least one of them will pan out. Both have sent authorizations to my bank card but I learned that that doesn't necessarily mean anything.
-
Yet another sign I have too many CDs. I was going to check out buying the John Patton Select and referred to my CD list to see if I had any of the individual discs contained in the set when I discovered I already owned it!!

Argh! I contacted Keenzo and the Brookmeyer is a no-go so I'm assuming the other titles are as well. The hunt goes on.
-
I tried ordering the Johnny Richards from them yesterday when it was still listed as "low stock." Unfortunately, a telephone call to them today revealed that it actually was not in stock (and my order was automatically cancelled). I'd suggest that anyone else placing an order make a similar call. For what it's worth, the Johnny Richards was listed as "out of stock" when I checked the the other titles that are noted in my previous post. (still listed as "low stock") I just checked my bank and an authorization has been made on my account for the amount of the Bob Brookmeyer Select I ordered yesterday.

For those who are still searching, as of earlier today, the following OOP Selects are still available ("low stock") via Keenzo.com for $43.71 + $5.53 shipping as was mentioned in an earlier post: Bud Shank / Bob Cooper Bob Brookmeyer Dexter Gordon John Patton

Stop wondering and GET IT. Great set. I'm tempted but I'm not a real big trios guy (with some exceptions) and CD money is getting tight for me so I decided to forgo it. The Pacific Jazz piano trios set kind of fell into the "nice to have" vs. the "I really want it" category.

Thanks for the tip, I ordered the Bob Brookmeyer set. It still shows "low stock" on the web site so I'm assuming one will be on its way. At $49.24 shipped, it's still a slightly better deal than I would have gotten from Mosaic if they were still able to sell it. Now I just have to cancel my "backordered" Brookmeyer from DeepDiscount.com which I'm guessing probably wouldn't ever materialize.
-
Of the Selects I haven't already purchased, the Bob Brookmeyer was the only one still out there that I was interested in enough to want to buy it. I was going to wait a while until it hit "running low". (I decided I could do without the Pacific Jazz piano trios set I was thinking about earlier.) I ordered one through DeepDiscount.com and they took my order with the following caveat: "This item is temporarily out of stock and will ship to you as soon as product becomes available. We will email you soon with an estimated delivery date. You will not be charged for this item until it is shipped." It doesn't look good but I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I wouldn't want to be without the Bennie Green and the Curtis Amy Selects, two under the radar kind of artists. Both sets are excellent and I'd recommend grabbing them while you still have the chance. I'm wondering if I should grab that Pacific Jazz piano trios set.

In today's mailbox: Winard Harper - Trap Dancer Winard Harper - Be Yourself This second title can be had dirt cheap but I don't think that it's an indication that quality is lacking. I enjoyed it and thought it was a pretty nice disc.

Up with addition and price drops.

George Wallington - Live At The Cafe Bohemia
mikelz777 replied to Tom 1960's topic in Recommendations
There's nothing wrong with settling for "enjoyable". I'd agree, I don't think it's essential listening but if you enjoy George Wallington, Donald Byrd, Jackie McLean or some combination of the three, (not even taking into account Frank Foster or Jimmy Cleveland on the 2nd session) it's definitely worth checking out. -
George Wallington - Live At The Cafe Bohemia
mikelz777 replied to Tom 1960's topic in Recommendations
The second I saw the line-up on the disc I couldn't pass it up. (It didn't hurt that I was going through a Donald Byrd and a Jackie McLean thing at the time.) Prior to finding this I had been listening to the Wallington sessions with Donald Byrd and Phil Woods. (The New York Scene and Jazz For The Carriage Trade) I picked up a different version of the disc, a 2-CD set which includes alternate takes for the Cafe Bohemia session as well as a 2nd release, "George Wallington Showcase". (see below) I really dug it and think it is well worth checking out. Complete Live at the Café Bohemia AMG review: The people behind the Lone Hill Jazz label deserve some kind of humanitarian award for reissuing two of George Wallington's very best albums: Live! At Cafe Bohemia (recorded on September 9, 1955, and subsequently issued on both the Progressive and Prestige labels) and George Wallington Showcase (recorded in a studio for Blue Note on May 12, 1954). The band heard at the Bohemia — trumpeter Donald Byrd and alto saxophonist Jackie McLean in front of Wallington, Paul Chambers, and Art Taylor — had the power and depth of ensembles led by Charles Mingus and Art Blakey during the mid- to late '50s. The Showcase session, using Quincy Jones arrangements, resulted in music that was equally inspired and exhilarating, if at times a bit more reined in. A magnificent front line of trumpeter Dave Burns, trombonist Jimmy Cleveland, and saxophonists Frank Foster and Danny Banks was securely backed by Wallington, Oscar Pettiford, and Kenny Clarke. Banks, a capable baritone saxophonist, doubled at times on the flute, intensifying the James Moody-like aspect already suggested by the presence of Burns and Pettiford. This marvelous session acts as an organic counterweight to the sizzling live date. The inclusion of alternate takes from both albums adds ballast and excitement to a superb and satisfying stash of vintage hard bop. -

Is there anyone in the upper-midwest area who might be interested in a Can-Am cabinet? I have a black, 2-drawer unit that I might be interested in selling. It holds 540 CDs (or 240 DVDs) and the dimensions are 37.75" wide, 14.5" high and 20" deep. It has a key lock with 2 keys and would also come with the drawer dividers and adjustable back-stops. It is in used/like new condition. The cost of buying this unit with the drawer dividers from Can-Am (before the pricey shipping costs) is $507.00. I was thinking of offering it for $375.00 - $400.00. I won't ship it, you'd have to pick it up. I live in the Minneapolis/St. Paul suburbs in Minnesota. I suppose if you lived relatively close, I could deliver it. This picture gives you an idea of what it would look like. (please note, I have the 2-drawer unit, not the 3-drawer and mine wouldn't have the wheels) The unit I have is pictured in the upper right-hand corner of the link below (except mine is black) with includes additional information if you're interested in checking it out further. Can-Am cabinet picture and specs. Why not pick up a great storage solution for your CDs? If you're not local, you could make a nice trip of it, maybe go see the Mall Of America, catch some jazz at the Dakota or other venues, check out one of the zoos, theaters or museums. PM me with any questions or if you're curious or interested.
