  1. Take it from me - er, - it can survive an hour in a cup on its way to the doctor's office. I've got two little ones to prove it... Seriously, though, I'll bet they were having "safe sex" and she neglected to "toss the evidence."
  2. So much for the Grammies. True, but come on: anything that wasn't in a traditional jewel box was nominated.

Well I know that Shorter can play outside - I just don't generally consider him an outside guy on a regular basis. Just as I don't consider Marsh that way.
  4. Funny and sad all at the same time. She's got a lot of nerve demanding child support. Still, the courts will generally rule on what's in the "best interests of the child."
  5. My point about Braxton is that he's generally considered an "outside" player who can play "inside" when he wants to. But I suppose one can say that about almost anybody...
  6. Up for air. And for anyone going to this show, maybe we can try to hook up...
  7. Pharoah Sanders (at least "recently") Anthony Braxton (on his "standards" dates) Gato Barbieri ? Eric Dolphy Booker Ervin (occassionally?) Joe Henderson (again, occassionally) Odean Pope Roland Kirk

Interesting the different interpretations of an "inside/outside" player. I've never thought of Wayne Shorter as being "outside" at all, and Coltrane only in his later years. I wouldn't call Marsh "outside" either, though I think I can understand that more because of his extensive improvising. One of my favorite inside/outsiders (at least as in how I consider that term) is the not-yet-mentioned Pharoah Sanders.
  9. Congrats on the gig, Mike. And I bet your wife's relieved... I just hope you didn't have to do anything for the club owner either!
  10. Well at least Aric is lucid enough to suggest that somebody edit his rant...
  11. Congrats Weizen!
  12. You know, the more I think about the question - "How did I become interested in jazz?" - the less certain the answer is to me. The past becomes rather blurry at that point, and no it has nothing to do with experimenting with anything in high school or college. It was around 1980, my first year in college I believe, or possibly the year before, while still in high school. I can still remember my first jazz LPs - "Massey Hall," Miles' "In a Silent Way," Monk's 2-Lp Blue Note collection - and I think what triggered their purchase was the first Rolling Stone Record Guide which came out around 1979-80. They recommended those albums highly, and for a while I took my chances on any of their 5-star albums. I also checked out a ton o' jazz LPs from the library, which is how I first heard Mingus, Coleman, and others. But what I can't pinpoint any longer is what exactly prompted me to want to listen to jazz in the first place. My parents had no interest in the music and most of my peers in high school were into either Zepellin or Genesis/Yes. Born and raised in Rochester, my biggest exposure to jazz in the early 70's was Chuck Mangione - so come to think of it "Feels So Good" may have been the root of my obsession. I also played the drums for a little bit, and I remember Buddy Rich being my instructor's inspiration (though not really mine). But what exactly made me jump right into the deep end eludes me now...
  13. Hmm. If jazz never existed, do you think we'd have all become rabid Kenny G. fans, all posting here on the KennyGissimo forums?
  14. Agreed! Jazz is just another genre of music. I love listening to music, so if there wasn't any jazz I'd just be listening to some other genre...

    Hmm. The Henderson's down already....
  16. That's extremely cool, Drew! Would love to see a pic when you're able...
  17. Well of course records are meant to be played, but they're also collectibles. Perhaps the original poster has no interest in the music or perhaps he has a second copy for listening. His reason for having the LP is irrelevant to the question asked - unless, that is, his reason is to hear the album, in which case I guess he would have to remove the shrinkwrap. I have a few still-sealed LPs, and unless I want to listen to the album I'll leave it sealed until that time - and I've never had one warp on me by doing so. The way I see it is you can always take the shrinkwrap off but you can never put it back on and have the LP (as a potential collectible) in its original state.
  18. Well it's a great deal if you like Bill Evans, but an awful lot of Evans if you don't. Out of the 18 discs, there are something like 11-12 discs of his trio, so that may be a lot more than you need. But it's obviously not something to listen to in one (or even two or three) sittings.
  19. Damn, I'm starting to like this Clem dude more 'n more...

My vote, too, would be for Witchi-Tai-To or Belonging, though I tend to think of the latter as a Jarrett album. More "garbarek-y" albums that I like are Afric Pepperbird, Dansere, and Photo With...
  22. Cool. But after seeing the title of this thread, my first thoughts were either that "Demand" was some obscure jazz record label or that some Hawkins performances were finally available on iTunes!
  23. Just received mine a few minutes ago. Shipped from Uni Music's Santa Monica offices - funny, but a year or two ago they could have interofficed this to me! Just gotta comment about the packaging. Even after hearing the complaints about this for years, I still gotta say, "What the fuck were they thinking!" I don't mind the outer metal box (slightly rusted, but already staining my fingers) but the way the discs are shoved inside on that metal ring thing! The book seems nice, but as I'm getting older it's really getting hard to read that teeny tiny type...

The thing that always get me about this picture is - what the hell were they thinking ending railroad tracks some 40 feet above the ground? Something like this was inevitable. And it's just calling out to someday be used for the cover for some unreleased old jazz album... B-)
