I thought this was the point of the thread? Yes so why all the swearing? Garbarak has that affect on people... B-)

The oop Xanadu albums are needle drop transfers taken from LPs (it states so). Don't know about the Wilkerson as I have that on CD. Overall, I find that less than 1% of the emusic tracks have errors. Also, stay away from the few tracks that are still encoded at 128 (stated as such).

That won't last long, especially with the rain we've been getting in So Cal lately...

Very much agree with this. Garbarak can, at times, be one of my favorite tenor players (in Jarrett's quartet, for example), but at other times he can be terribly boring. His tone is damn icy, which is something that I can either love or hate depending on mood. Question: has he recorded much (anything?) outside of ECM? I'd be curious to hear him in a context other than ECM and Eicher's cooly Euro sound production...

Just heard about this upcoming show... http://www.mckenna.edu/news/aji/2004-2005/Spring/ Concerts are supposedly free. The other cats playing later in the month ain't too shabby either...

Not only do I understand Clem's post, but I think I agree with it entirely! Stop the world, I wanna get off now!

The two-disc set you ask for is the Impressions set... impressions does not include the versions with overdubbed orchestra. Exactly. I have the Impressions set and I think I'll stick with that one. My point was, the only reason to re-release this is for the improved sound quality - if they did, in fact, finally locate better tapes - or to finally have all the dubbed and undubbed versions together on one disc (or a pair of discs). You can say that the "format" disctates the release, but so far Verve has shown some incredible stupidity with some of their LPR releases. They recently released the "RRK in Copenhagen" disc, but failed to include the extra tracks from that concert that were previously included on the box set. So why not release it as a VME instead of an LPR, and take advantage of the bonus material available? The LPR should be limited to those albums that don't have bonus material (though generally I don't understand why they can't include any appropriate bonus material in either case - who wants a 25 minute CD with pertanent material purposefuly excluded?)

I ain't too embarrassed to say: The Archies' version!

I bought one of these last week and got a shipping notice from Uni the very next day. Don't know how long it will actually take to arrive, but they processed quickly.

He's only 50? But he's got enough albums out there for a 200-year old guy! Seriously, I dig a lot of what he does, but I haven't really listened to many of his albums in a while. When I was younger and still learning the ropes, he was one of the guys who, while not too "out there," played with more intensity (or just modernity) than most of the guys that I listened to at the time. Now obviously my horizons have expanded over the years and Murray now sounds a lot more mainstream to me. But I still like that he tries so many different types of combos and "theme" albums, like his Grateful Dead and Coltrane tributes. The big band that he did with Butch Morris and the organ jazz discs are particular favorites, as well as some of his DIW quartet albums.

How can you be so sure that some aren't assembled by the NIGHT shift??? I don't know about any "day laborers," but I'm pretty sure tiny cobbler elves mend Michael Cuscuna's shoes in the middle of the night...

Anybody ever see the spoof TV commercial on SNL with Stevie Wonder (really him!) hawking a camera? Hilarious!

If you sign up again using the same e-mail address/account as before, emusic should still "remember" you and give you access to all your old downloads - which, of course, you can re-download for free, at the improved VBR rates. I recently re-downloaded a whole bunch of stuff that I had burned to CDR and deleted from my hard drive. But when I got my mp3 player I figured I'd get the files again to keep as mp3s.

Great piece, Peter. Thanks. That had me tearing up more than any of the obits I've read.

Man blows up ballons - with his ears!

I don't even wanna think what he can do with ping-pong balls! -
There are many guitar-bass duet albums, but the Metheny-Haden is my absolute favorite. An essential album imo.

Rooster's BFT #25, questions and logistics only...
RDK replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Blindfold Test
My two cents... I don't think we've had any BFTs with more than 40 participants. 30-35 seems more normal, though your 4-disc "box set" may draw a few more. Depends on who's burning for you and the software/burner that they're using, but you could have a problem with very long CDRs. Besides the 79:56 minute length, check the file size as well. I had one disc once that was less than 80 minutes long but over 700 MB, and it was the file size that prevented me from burning it. (Have a newer computer now so that's no longer a problem.) Also, instead of a program that changes the volume of tracks (which may or may not affect sound quality), see if your burner/software has built-in "normalization." That will help smooth out volume differeces and shouldn't affect SQ. At least it never has for me. -
Christ, can Verve not get anything right? This should have been released as a 2-disc set with all versions (dubbed and undubbed) of the original tracks.
-
Jeff, there are literally thousands of jazz albums and tens of thousands of desireable tracks available for download at emusic. If someone can't find 40 tracks to download in a month's time, then something's wrong. I don't care how you look at it, but emusic is hardly a ripoff. Heck, if you have one single track left in your monthly alotment you can d/l a complete (one long track) Anthony Braxton album if you like.

A lot of people seem to be jumping to the conclusion that Sims wanted the title changed because of his support of the war. But I've seen no evidence to back this up. Honestly, we know so little of the reasons behind this - both personal and political - that I think the speculation is doing a disservice to the artist. He may be in favor of the war (and in that case "so what?" - he's entitled to his opinion) but we really don't know that. He just may be more sensitive to any possible "offensiveness" than we are - he's the one, after all, who (in his mind at least) could lose gigs over something like this. Also, I'm not sure what Sims being a lawyer has to do with any of this. Are some of you guys implying that being a lawyer automatically makes him a conservative/Republican/warmonger? If so, I find that generaliztion very offensive, and believe me it would come as a shock to my very liberal lawyer wife.

No need to be embarrassed by James Taylor. I can take him or leave him, but he was a talented cat. Overall I try hard not to disparage any musical genre as I find there's both brilliance and dreck in all of them. Might i also suggest that more guys have gotten laid as a result of playing James Taylor than John Coltrane...

By "hair band" do you mean Twisted Sister (as already mentioned) or. say, Flock of Seagulls or Psychedelic Furs? If the latter, then I'll admit to a few "hair bands" that I kinda sorta dig; if the former, then they most definitely they sucked worse.

Waiting for the Boogaloo Sisters... RELEASED!
RDK replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Just need to add that "Jimmy Smith Goes to Washington" is a great title. Very clever play on words combining one of my favorite films with one of the greatest organists of all time.
