Jim's story reminds me of my one-and-only time seeing Miles live. It was 1984 or so, so he wasn't anywhere near the top of his game (imo) and the albums he was producing then weren't quite my cuppa, it was an outdoor concert by the water (this was in san Diego) and wouldn't you know it it was raining. My girlfriend (now wife) was with me and I don't think she was diggin' it all that much - and neither was I truth be told - but looking back on it now I would have gone through that experience ten times over (and paid even more) just to say that I saw Miles at least once before he died.

Haven't been to the Bakery in several months, but October is packed with acts that I want to catch.

Might possibly agree that it goes away when/if Cuscuna goes, but are you suggesting that he (or Mosaic) is a "fast buck artist?" Anyway, Mosaic has been around for about 25 years now, hardly a "short life."

I'd recommend going even if you aren't a fan of the recent album or of freer, more a-g jazz in general. I've often found freer performances of this type far more interesting and enjoyable in person than on disc. Heck, it's worth it just to experience seeing Roscoe do his circular breathing thing in person.

Paypal is great! Never had a problem with it.

Anybody know anything about... Charlie Shavers & Coleman Hawkins: A Famous Jazz Party Looks very tempting and AMG at least doesn't seem to list this material as available elsewhere.

I've heard of some of those guys - not too shabby a band! Nice pics, Mark!

Music & Arts is indeed legit, but they are likely to be cutouts so moralizing on those grounds may not get you very far. Also, many people feel that that Definitive's version of Benny Goodman's 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert is the, uh, definitive version out there (i.e., it sounds the best). Haven't heard it yet myself, but I'll be ordering it now.

With this latest escapade, OJ's proving once again that he still has what it takes to play in the NFL...

Ah, I arrived too late. But Max & Sonny is good!

Of those you listed I'd pick the first one, Dizzy & Bird. There's just something really cool to me about naming a cat "Bird."

Stunning! Thanks for posting that.

Heh. Speaking of using the "original master tapes," someone over at the Hoffman forums was creamin' his BVDs over the idea that the "original session tapes" would be used for this 45 series. I posted that I didn't think that that in itself was that big an issue since the current CD reissues (the RVG series at least) were mastered from those same tapes. And sure enough, my (rather innocent imo) post was deleted. Damn touchy over there!

the tape boxes that are pictured on this site ... these are the master tapes for producing the original lp's, right ? but, these are not the original session tapes, right ? these master tapes are dubbed from the original session tapes ... or am i wrong ? I believe you are wrong. These are the original session tapes and not the compressed and/or EQ'd LP masters. These should also be the same ones used for producing the RVG and other BN releases.

Heh. This strikes me as funny in light of Chewy's response.

I hear that people still marry their cousins down your way too. And still resent the Union... -

Maybe in NY, but the El Pollo Loco out here is pretty yummy imo; i much prefer it to some of the others, both locals and chains. -
Well, no shit. And without Edison we'd all be meeting in someone's living room to talk about books. For the most part, their jobs are very different. Rudy's brilliance was as a recording engineer (though I'm also very fond of his LP cuttings) and Hoffman acknowledges that all the time. Hoffman doesn't engineer recordings but masters them afterwards - it's a completely different thing. A lot of people, myself included, have not always been happy with Rudy's CD remasters - they don't sound like his original vinyl. Different mastering philosophies I suppose, just like those between RVG and Ron McMaster. Some people seem to take SH's comments as "dissing" RVG; I don't think that's the case. If anything, he's suggesting that improved technology and pricey, audiophile standards can result in a better product. We'll see if that's indeed the case...

Yeah, that was an embarassing thread; don't know what bug got up his ass on that one. And Sckot's not usually such a dick either. I did find it funny, though, that some of Steve's curt and ambiguous comments reminded me of Chuck.

Well see, that's part of the deal for me right there. By today's standards, it really doesn't sound too much like "fusion". Not at all. No, I think i know what you mean by fusion in this case and that was actually what I was responding to. Don't know enough of the musical lexiconography to explain it further, but there's a certain late 60s-early 70s style that I've been digging these days, where rock and pop became more influential but before, as you say, it all "went South."

Unfortunately, on that website, you say anything bad about Steve and you're *gone*. They call it getting "gorted". They just don't allow anything negative about the guy. You want to say anything bad about him, you better do it here. It's his website so he can do what he wants, but sometimes it gets tough when he makes a pronouncement you don't agree with. A couple of times, I've considered staying away because of this, but there really is no better place to talk rock and roll CD pressings. Kevin Very true, and I find the "saint" attitude of a lot of members over there sickening, but to call Steve Hoffman a fraud as was done earlier in this thread is way over the line in my view. Why not keep it civil... I agree... on both counts. The SH forums is undeniably an odd and often frustrating place and the moderation is terribly heavy-handed. But I've met Steve a few times and I have nothing but positive things to say about him. Unlike his "reputation" I've found him to be surprisingly modest (though not unopinionated) and not at all the pompous audiophile that others would make him out to be. He's also very passionate about the music and knows his stuff, with his only goal to make it sound as good as he thinks it can be. I actually think he's a bit embarrassed by some of the sycophantic adoration he receives there as well as for the heavy-handed "gorting."

If it's any consolation, Jim, no "Hey" from me. I truly dislike later Klemmer, but I've developed a fondness for the "fusion" of this period and will keep an eye open for it in my vinyl-searching travels.

You should post more often - I've missed your avatar.
