As a wide-eyed child of the 60's, it pains me no end that we long abandoned our commitment to space exploration (at least on a human level). It would have been unfathomable, back in 1972, to imagine that we wouldn't have made it back to the moon by now. Like so many others, I grew up dreaming of becoming an astronaut, and those ideals have guided my life in so many ways.
I was thrilled, just yesterday, when my 6-year old daughter, working on a first grade project on careers, chose to do hers on "astronauts." Glad to see there's still some hope out there...
