  1. But that's the one I've been looking for!
  2. As a wide-eyed child of the 60's, it pains me no end that we long abandoned our commitment to space exploration (at least on a human level). It would have been unfathomable, back in 1972, to imagine that we wouldn't have made it back to the moon by now. Like so many others, I grew up dreaming of becoming an astronaut, and those ideals have guided my life in so many ways. I was thrilled, just yesterday, when my 6-year old daughter, working on a first grade project on careers, chose to do hers on "astronauts." Glad to see there's still some hope out there...
  3. That's a new one, and it's good! I reviewed it in the New Releases forum not long ago. I wonder why it was in the cutout bin. Not a cutout, but it may have been a promo copy (the disc is at work so I can't check). Amoeba will also mark down discs (sometimes dramatically) if they're slightly scratched or if the inserts are dinged.
  4. Hey Adam - thanks for the heads up. Not sure if I can make it, but I'll try.
  5. I'm a big fan of the clearance bins at Amoeba. $2.99 each, but also buy 4 and get one free. So less than $20 (inc. tax) for the following... Benny Carter "The King" (OJC) David Newman "Under a woodstock Moon" (Kokopelli) Jeannie & Jimmyu Cheatham "Gud Nuz Bluz" (Concord) Eric Watson Trio "Silent Hearts" (Sunnyside) Alvin Batiste "Marsalis Music Honors" Ruby Braff "Linger Awhile" (Vanguard) Lennie Tristano "Lennie Tristano/New Tristano" (Atlantic) Buddy Rich "All-Star Small Groups" (LRC)
  6. Jim, one of the sickest things I ever heard was when radio talk show host Dennis Prager did a segment on this very issue. I (nor he) could hardly believe it when he asked callers this very question - would you save your child or your pet? - and many of the callers had a hard time with the decision.
  7. I dunno. Is it really any better to waterboard a cat?
  8. Who is telling you to buy the 40th copy of Soul Station? Nobody. If you're happy with the copy you now have, so be it. No one has to buy any of these new vinyl reissues. But they are there if someone wants them. They may well be the "best" version available - and on vinyl - and if you don't already have a copy or want a (arguably) superior copy then go for it. On the one hand you rave about the test pressing that you heard, but on the other you dismiss the value/purpose of the entire reissue series. And wtf does any of this have to do with Stephen Biko? Gawd, the melodrama!
  9. Thanks, Adam! I missed this. Very busy week for me, but I'll try to catch the concert on Thursday.
  10. A double header for me: A free Vinny Golia set at six, followed by Bobby Hutcherson at the Bakery eight!
  11. Yes, terrific show last time! John, you guys have a new album to go with the tour?
  12. Yeah, the Turbanator knows how to put on a show. Last time I saw him (with Lou!) he got down on his knees and played the pedals with his hands.

    fraud

    Don't much care for it.
  14. http://stereocentral.tv/phpbb/index.php Lots of really hateful, juvenile stuff here, but also some funny (and warranted) bitching, mostly about the moderators and some of the more zealous sycophants. And no, I don't post there. Personally, I like Steve and his work, but some of his followers are a bit wacky.
  15. I think she's "thinner" in person.
  16. Well, yes, they are that bad. As for the vinyl, my limited experience with RTI has been exceptional. I dunno - maybe a bad batch? I visited the place once, took the tour, and saw first hand the pressing process and QA. Also saw huge vats of the top quality vinyl they usually use - which leads me to think these defects are an aberation. Still, I agree that spending $30 or more for shitty vinyl is a bad thing. Oh, btw, "cunt" is generally considered a pretty offensive word.
  17. Dave Liebman group at the Bakery.
  18. More often than not, they don't... But that's an issue for the record label not the consumer, who (theoretically) paid fairly for it the first time.
  19. Geez. I'm almost more excited by the Benoit. Almost.
  20. Emusic just added the Black & Blue label!
  21. Any love for "Muswell Hillbillies?" Possibly my favorite Kinks album.

    Amy Winehouse

I liked her more before I discovered Sharon Jones.
  23. Any streets out there with jazz or musical names? I suppose it's too much to ask for a Thelonious Monk Blvd? Not exactly jazz, but I live on "Lyric."
  24. My wife has a client who lives on Easy Street. Seriously.
