  1. My favorite Churchill comeback (and it's likely in the link Jon posted; I haven't looked yet) is when, at a dinner party, a lady scolded an obviously besotted Winston for being drunk. He replied: "I may be drunk, madam, but you're ugly. And I'll be sober in the morning."
  2. Did you include a warning label or was your name on the CD enough? Seriously, that's pretty cool.
  3. Look, it's the legendary Watermelon Man - half-man, half-melon!
  4. No worries. Just pointing out what might be some "rarities" to MM fans.
  5. For those so inclined, there are a few random MM tracks available on emusic. Don't look like jazz but instead dance/house music from various Japanese label comps.
  6. Just downloaded "Yele" with Alex Blake and am really digging it. Thanks for the tip!
  7. Indeed. I picked up a disk of his during the Tower close-out sale that impressed me, but better still is this 50-minute track with Johnny Dyani that I found on emusic... http://www.emusic.com/album/Per-Henrik-Wal...d/10842588.html
  8. That was taken during Mann's brief stint with the Village People. Before they settled on their soon-to-be-famous assemblage, the group consisted of a Police Officer, Indian Chief, Construction Worker, Biker, and Jazz Flautist.
  9. I don't understand any of that. But I like it when he hums along to his songs. It's cute.
  10. Can't we all just agree that Jarrett is a prick in his personal life and move on?
  11. okay... edit: not in response to B. Clugston btw...
  12. This reminds me I need to stop at the 7/11-turned-Quick-E Mart down the street...
  13. Is "Moods" the old Style Council tune? If so, great song!
  14. Holy Shit! But at least it comes with a disclaimer...
  15. I can't get past the guy named Ed Balls.
  16. I dunno... I guess I'm just really into cheesy cadences!
  17. Looking at all the words (I haven't heard the tune), I'm not even sure that I'd consider it "racist" - at least it doesn't appear to be racist in intent. Stereotypical, yes, but a product of its less sensitive era. As Jon correctly states, it does seem self-deprecating and tongue-in-cheek, and if an African-American singer wrote and sang it originally I don't think him using words like "nappy" and "pappy" would have given it any kind of racial connotation. That Mercer, a white dude, later sang it is a bit more problematic, but I'm not sure where to draw the line between minstrel and novelty song. edit: Adam said it much more eloquently than me!
  18. This reminds me of something a friend of mine from Boston once told me. He had a college professor (an African-American who grew up in the South but now lived and taught in Boston) who, in comparing "racism" between the North and the South, said something to the effect that Southerners hate the race but love the people while Northerners hate the people but love the race.
  19. Very good point. And I say that while generally siding with everyone else.
  20. Lakes Peacock & DeJohnette?
  21. I'd worry more if they didn't applaud at all.
  22. One of the more memorable pies I've ever had in my life (and I love my pizza!) was, believe it or not, the Hawaiian pizza at Moose McGillicuty's in Maui back in the late 80's. I've had plenty of ham and pinapple pies, but this was special - I'd never had anything like it. Unfortunately, when my wife and I returned there on our next trip, several years later, they had completely changed their pizza recipes and the Hawaiian they served us then was pretty lame, the kind of Hawaiian pizza you'd find anywhere.
  23. One of my favorites (though not exactly traditional despite being served in a traditionally red vinyl-boothed Italian restaurant) is Etna's on El Cajon Blvd. in San Diego. One of the densest, sweetest crusts I've ever had and plenty of cheese. I rarely go to SD without stopping in and/or bringing one back home with me.
  24. Has anyone heard anything about these backorders?
