They are an example of a contemporary "rock" group that is doing really creative things. So don't think that TTK has his head buried in the sand and is listening only to Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. I am turning on and tuning in to the sounds of today, and the Beatles are where it's at, baby! If you're not already doing so, I would implore you to get out of your comfort zone and check out what the kids of today are listening to! Today's generation is saying some really beautiful things, and it's up to us as adults to listen.

We have a tiki room in our home, with a docking station that plays jungle sound effects on a loop. I always blast the jungle sound effects when listening to Afro-Bossa. They improve an already fantastic album!

There is sadly a sub-set of the jazz audience who lacks any sense of fun, adventure, or joie du vivre. Who needs 'em. For example, all those calcified academics who hate Sun Ra. That version of "All My Loving" would fit great on Afro Bossa!

Me too. Especially Afro Bossa, as it is Duke's full-on exotica album, even though he had been doing exotica one-offs for years, including things like "Baikiff" and of course "Caravan."

Yes. I think it is important for us as jazz fans to keep up with the "rock" music that today's youth are listening to. We can't just keep listening to Stan Kenton forever. And even though I don't spin much "rock" music, The Beach Boys are an example of a contemporary "rock" group doing some really creative things.

Agreed. I have two of these, and I think there at least 5 last time I checked.

The Beach Boys are one of the very few "rock" groups of today enjoyed by TTK. I recently picked up the 5-CD Feel Flows box set of material from the Sunflower/Surf's Up period. Content-wise, this is really good. There are so many good tracks that remained in the can. It will be easy and convenient to omit the dogs and assemble much stronger albums than those originally released. The downside is the mastering. It is very shrill; I had to turn the treble almost all the way down. And it sounds as if the dynamic range has been reduced by abuse of compression/limiting. I get ear fatigue halfway through a disc.

Love this film! Have you compared the European version with the US AIP version? I prefer the US version with the score by Thee Great Les Baxter.

Breathless is a favorite. Still waiting for a cheap reissue of Stress, his collaboration with Thee Great Marius Constant.

I don't have this one, but I have lots of Sun Ra from all periods extending into the 80s. I wasn't thinking about Sun Ra in this context, because I don't really consider him "jazz."

Well, digital collections can be sorted by year, provided they use the year of original release and not the year of the CD release.

Interesting that you mention Bobby Hutcherson. I first encountered him via this station via the release of Patterns. although this was from one year later (1980). (I realize this is an older session.)

A few reasons: 1, I am asking for a friend - literally - as part of 1979-themed programming at a radio station for which I volunteer. Given that my jazz accumulation focuses primarily on late-1930s to mid-1970s, it is very likely that I have no jazz albums from 1979. 2. 1979 is the year when I first began listening to jazz radio on the aforementioned station. While they were playing older classic stuff, of course, they were playing new stuff also, so I wanted to jog my memory with regard to new things that may have been in heavier rotation. 3. As I (probably) have no jazz albums from 1979, I am curious to learn where jazz was as it stood at the threshold of that most dreaded of decades: the 1980s. Thanks all for the recs so far. I will sample these albums on the InterTubes.

I realize that most people assume that I hate all of today's "rock" music - and admittedly this music does not get spun very often at my pad - but I am not joking here. I am the first to admit that some of today's rock groups are doing some really creative things, the Beatles, for example. While their own versions are often rough-hewn and a tad amateurish, the songs really sparkle when delivered with the civility, gentility, and politeness that we associate with jazz.

Their guitarist, Creed Bratton, was on The Office (the US version).'

Yes, thank you! I have earlier issues of most of these, but it is a great one-stop shopping experience if you need to start a Herrmann collection!
