  1. Next up is Tito Puente's Tambo! Here is "Jungle Holiday:" And the beautiful "Call of the Jungle Birds." Ms. TTK and I used to listen to this album a lot when we first got together.
  2. Mine was thriving, but the flowers started falling off. Eventually, the stem became yellowish-brown, so I trimmed it back. The plant itself seems to be doing well. I have tried to give it the proper amount of sunlight, along with a recommended feeding of 3 oz. of water per week. I have heard that orchids can come back. What is your experience?
  3. Drinking some fizzy water with that thawed fresh-squeezed lime juice, which is still very good. Now enjoying some Gene Rains. Vibraphonist Gene Rains was Decca's answer to Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman. He made only three albums, but these are creme de la creme exotica. I'm guessing that the masters were lost in the Universal disaster.
  4. I've never regretted buying a Bobby Hutcherson album. Well, there was that one smooth jazz album he did in the 1980s. I unloaded that one.
  5. Also, I have jungle sound effects on the docking station in our Bora Bora room. I have these playing along with the music. I'm out of grapefruit juice, but a have this fizzy water called Spindrift that has real grapefruit juice in it. Because a Navy Grog uses both fizzy water and grapefruit, I may attempt to mix one later using this stuff, and see how it turns out. I will keep you posted.
  6. While International Tiki Day is technically August 11th, celebrations generally occur on the weekend before or after if it falls during the week. So, TTK will be celebrating today. I am assessing my lime supply. I have a huge bag in the fridge, but I also have from frozen lime juice which I am thawing. (Lime juice should be frozen and not refrigerated for longevity.) I could mix Trader Vics Maitais, although I am out of mint. I think I have all of the ingredients for a Shrunken Skull. I recently waddled over to Qobuz to buy some lossless Les Baxter albums which never appeared on CD, save for vinyl rips. These will serve as part of the soundtrack this evening. For now, while I'm cleaning the house, I am listening to Stanley Black's Exotic Percussion on Phase 4, and then Lalo Schifrin's Several Shades of Jade, which was released under Cal Tjader's name. These are paired with a virgin fruit smoothie. I love Stanley Black's version of "Flamingo," with pretty ladies doing wordless vocals. And here is Lalo Schifrin's "Borneo."
  7. Qobuz has Patterns available as a lossless download for only $8.99. I may have to get this.
  8. So it looks like I have some of these albums on CD, for which they created period-appropriate cover art, but I still have lots of these on vinyl with the appropriate cover art.
  9. So it looks like all of the albums I have with the inappropriate cover art were in something called the "Blue Note Classic" series, which is not a helpful phrase, as they are using that same phrase now. Here is a list. I would like to know if most or all of these albums later received period-appropriate cover art. https://www.discogs.com/label/66004-Blue-Note-CLASSIC
  10. Is there a definitive list of previously unreleased Blue Note Albums that were released circa 1980 with CTI-like cover art, but that later received period-appropriate cover art with later reissues?
  11. For me, the cover art determines how I perceive the music. Even the record label design, also. I have said to my wife that she can randomly put on an LP, and I can tell her from the next room if the record label design is correct or not.
  12. I have Medina on vinyl with ugly cover art.
  13. If the whole thing is as good as the title track, I agree with you. I have another of the unreleased Bobby Hutcherson albums that was released during that period, when the covers used CTI-like artwork instead of something period appropriate.
  14. Circa 1978 or 79, I started listening to a local station that played jazz in the evenings. The first time I heard Bobby Hutcherson was on this station during this time. They played the title track from Patterns when it was released in 1980. I have a lot of Bobby Hutcherson albums, but this one has eluded me. So I waddled over to the InterTubes and played "Patterns." I still remembered the melody more than 40 years later.
  15. You are very lucky! I would keep those four CDs in one location, and I may even be tempted to frame the cover art together! Did you tell her the records wouldn't sound as noisy after they are cleaned? But I know what you mean. I have a Nitty Gritty, and when it is powered up, it sounds like my parents' 1950s-era four-wheel Electrolux vacuum cleaner!
  16. In the US, there were some early releases that were mono, but stereo was the norm. In fact, reel-to-reel was the only way to hear music in stereo for a few years, so the tapes were geared toward the stereo market.
  17. Bernard Herrmann - White Witch Doctor
  18. I don't play music directly from the drives. I mostly play the CDs themselves, and use the files as backup. I may import files into Apple Music if I want to burn a custom CD. So for my uses, I don't know what the powered units accomplish that mine do not. I like the size and convenience of the small ones.
  19. I began backing up all my CDs about 10 years ago, and have more or less backed up everything. I have the smaller, non-powered drives, and they work great. I back up all my digital music on two and lately three drives. These can fail, especially if they are accidentally removed improperly, which is why I keep a few. I back up everything using XLD, which tells you if the discs extracted correctly or not. As I'm a Mac person, I use Apple lossless. One thing about the smaller ones: If you need a USB port for your computer, be sure you get a good one by a company like Anker. The cheap ones will not be able to handle transferring a lot of information.
  20. Well, yeah, if she's buying on impulse! she's probably making some good choices.
