  1. I've been watching this show from the beginning and have no issues whatsoever with the fourth season, thus far (two episodes at this point). Totally digging it.
  2. Introducing Paul Bley - Debut (OJC reissue, mono) Ike & Tina - Outta Season - Blue Thumb (stereo) - Great whiteface/watermelon album cover!
  3. Shelly Manne and His Men, Vol. 1 - Contemporary (OJC reissue, mono)
  4. Only about 10 tracks - some interesting choices: Side 1 Mother Nature's Son Rocky Raccoon Julia Back in the U.S.S.R. Dear Prudence Side 2 Cry Baby Cry Good Night Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey Sexy Sadie Blackbird
  5. RD, you really need to find the Ramsey Lewis "Mother Nature's Son" album - all White album tunes with Morton Subotnick-esque moog interludes between tracks. Far better than the Beatles' album.
  6. James Brown - Slaughter's Big Rip-Off - Polydor (white label promo) Various - Brothers and Other Mothers Vol. 2 - Savoy
  7. Thanks Chas. I pulled enough for two shows, and naturally, didn't get to everything. There were a couple of other Andre Hodeir tracks I was considering, but they were very long. Hopefully I'll get to do a follow-up. Man with the Golden Arm: The Jerry Goldsmith stuff that I played is on the 4-disc Twilight Zone set. Not sure if it's still in print - well worth picking up if you can find it. One disc of Herrmann, One Goldsmith, and two discs of various composers. Incidentally, the background music when I was talking from the Outer Limits episode "Nightmare" by Dominic Frontiere.
  8. That's the least of his problems, IMHO. I can't believe that guy had a career.
  9. Thank you guys for not including Dave Marsh on any of your lists.
  10. When you've accumulated a lot of records, the key is to get familiar with stuff but not too familiar with it. And then to mix it up stylistically.
  11. Michel Legrand plays Richard Rodgers - Philips (black label, mono). From 1962, this is an overlooked gem that has not been reissued on CD AFAIK. A big band lineup augmented with woodwinds, french horns, and additional percussion. Brilliant writing, lots of jazz content and that touch of Kennedy-era space age sparkle. Right up there with Legrand Jazz, IMHO. Then: Michel Legrand - Les Desmoiselles De Rochefort, Instrumental Version - UA (pink and orange stereo) Michel Legrand - The Happy Ending - UA (pink and orange, stereo) John Barry - On Her Majesty's Secret Service - UA (pink and orange, stereo).
  12. Allen, I just read the review, and this was my favorite part: "...I could understand how just “some guy who collects records” could sit around and play these things without cringing (I’ve met several of these), but I find it puzzling why Lowe, a professional jazz musician, inflicts so much pop drivel on the listener and then makes such comments as “I like it, so there.” You couldn't PAY for a better line than that. That sentence alone sealed the deal for me. Can I give you my credit card number?
  13. Allen, if it's any consolation: No one gives a rat's posterior about critics anymore. Critics' opinions don't carry the same weight they did decades ago, even though the critics have probably put on weight themselves. People who would care enough about music to buy the collections you compile would read about them on sites like this, or read Amazon reviews, etc. If there is a new release that I'm interested in, I can determine pretty quickly if I should buy it or not. I don't worry about what Robert Cristgau thinks. The days of the almighty music critic are gone. So don't sweat it.
  14. I mention "Stones" because there was a limited edition CD pairing of "Stones" and "Psychedelic Percussion." They go well together. Like a fine cabernet with drunken goat cheese.
  15. I KNOW YOU ARE NOT KIDDING!!! EQUALLY AMAZING IS "STONES" BY EMIL RICHARDS.
  16. 1st Priority - Stuff I want that I probably won't run into any time soon. 2nd Priority - Stuff I want that I probably wont find at this price.
  17. Booker Ervin - The Trance - Prestige (green label reissue, stereo). Mono playback to improve balance.
  18. Zoot Sims - Zoot - Riverside (OJC reissue, mono).
  19. Parts of it reminded me of 70s Euro-sleeze that I love so dearly, but it never quite reached the heights of, say, Horst Jankowski's MPS albums or Paul Mauriat, to say nothing of Michel Colombier.
  20. I have an Oppo DVD player, and after entering the code, it plays films from all regions - at least all of the regions that I'm aware of. Is this the case with the Oppo Blu-Ray players?
  21. McCoy Tyner - Song for My Lady - Milestone (label design I'd never seen before, stereo). God, I'm such a sucker for any 70s song or LP title with the word "lady" in it.
  22. Is it worth the upgrade? How do conventional DVDs look when played on Blu-Ray? Will we be forced to upgrade at some point soon anyway (because there won't be conventional DVDs of certain titles available)?
  23. The Blue Stars of France - Pardon My English - Mercury (black label, mono).
