  1. I have a Dynaflex pressing of Mancini's "Mr. Lucky" that sounds AMAZING, blows away the black dog copy.
  2. A lot of this occurs because of the EU 50-year copyright law, which is bound to change in 2012. In most cases, these are done well (e.g. El/Cherry Red). With rare titles, it beats not having the music. Otherwise, I'm content to play records. Also, master tapes disappear.
  3. The show is now archived for one week: http://www.wmnf.org/programs/144
  4. There is a Japanese reissue of "Jazz Goes to Physical Therapy," but it's not out in the US, AFAIK.
  5. I had George Russell pullled but I didn't get to him. I also had "City of Glass" pulled, but I opted for "Abstraction" by Pete Rugolo. We're on the same wavelength. Hope you like the show.
  6. I get very excited when I find his records on vinyl! Still looking for"Simpatico" with Gary McFarland, with the great scooter cover!
  7. I will be devoting an upcoming radio show to Twilight Zone jazz. Details here:
  8. What's PT?
  9. TTK will be guest hosting WMNF's next installment of "A Step Outside," Wednesday, June 23 on www.wmnf.org from 9 pm to 10:30 pm. EST. I will focus on an esoteric sub-genre that I have dubbed Twilight Zone jazz, a mid-century hybrid of jazz and "serious" music that suggests caffeine jags, the concrete jungle, and an imposing modern world gone awry. Here is a previous thread: The show will be archived for exactly one week, before disappearing forever into the ether. See you tomorrow.
  10. Agree with you completely. Even looking beyond jazz, film composers such as Bernard Herrmann had already gone the minimalist, hypnotic static route previously.
  11. Supposedly, they are reissuing the hard-to-find "Jazz Impressions of Dante's Nine Circles of Hell."
  12. Baden Powell - Le Grand Festival - Barclay French double LP, circa 1970.
  13. "Kon-Tiki" by Thor Heyerdahl A fascinating expedition, even if Heyerdahl's theories have been disproved by the genome project.
  14. Hawaii Right Now! The Aliis - Reprise (stereo)
  15. Did they do "Agua Dulce?" If not, they're washed up. Get it? "Agua?" "Washed up?"
  16. Agreed, except the swing tune in the middle of side two sounds out of place. The rest of the album is great, though.
  17. Ira Sullivan - Horizons - Atlantic (Red and purple mono)
  18. Thanks Jim. That's what I got. A/Bed it with a $999 Yamaha - I thought the Privia had better sound and action, overall. BTW, the hardest part of the decision was getting past the name "Casio."
  19. MG spins more vinyl than any of us. I'm going to his house. I'll bring the wine.
  20. I downloaded the 10" cover from the Japanese BN site, printed it CD size on glossy paper, and slid it over the commercial CD cover (12" version) on my copy. I like the 10" album cover better.
  21. PLEEZE, don't EVER compare the sublime flute to the dreaded soprano sax, which is THEE MOST HORRIBLE INSTRUMENT EVER INVENTED!
  22. Just found this thread and voted for the ballads. Still, I like both. One of the reasons I love the "Come Fly with Me" album is that it mixes ballads and swingers, a rarity in the Sinatra catalog in that regard. Sinatra's version of "A Cottage for Sale" on "No One Cares" is absolutely stunning. That one easily goes in my top 10 Sinatra performances list.
  23. Vibes had a towering figure, and thus a role model, pretty early on - Lionel Hampton. I can't think of any of the flautists (as in primary instrument) mentioned so far who come close to his popularity. Maybe not, but I was simply making the comparison because neither the flute nor the vibraphone is underrepresented in my collection. Maybe it's all what you buy or are drawn to. I never would have thought to ask the question.
  24. I hope so, but the corporate entity that now uses the name Impulse! was very slow to catch on to the resurgence in popularity of Gabor and Mid-60s Chico that peaked about 10 years ago. But there is always hope.
