  2. As I attempted to address in my post, I don't think it's a rare instrument in jazz at all, at least not in my collection. I'd never even thought about this topic until reading your initial post. Then again, I remember Gary Burton saying something along the lines of the vibes being an "unusual" instrument. Not in my collection. Every album I own has vibes! I have a Fajardo LP with a giant tiki on the cover. I can't remember if I liked the record, but damn it's a cool cover!
  3. If he never did anything besides "Blue Velvet," that would have been enough. RIP.
  4. This has been sitting on my shelf and has been on my "to read" list for years. Opinions seem to be very divided on it. Either that it is a timeless classic, or that it is hopelessly outdated with its Freudian perspective (It was first published in 1949). I've never read anything by Campbell. Is this worth reading, or is there something better that has come out in more recent decades?
  5. I thought this was a Rutles appreciation thread.
  6. Geez, I have tons of stuff with flute, especially Latin jazz stuff. Lots of jazz soundtracks, lots of space age bachelor stuff.. To me, it can get a little cloying when they're up there in the higher register for too long. But the sound of an alto flute or bass flute has a very moody and sensuous quality. Alto flute paired with the vibes is probably one of my favorite instrumental pairings.
  7. I have the US edition of this album with different cover art. I like this record! WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!?
  8. I heartily endorse this game.
  9. TTK will be BACK on WMNF's Latino 54 on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 with an Food-Themed show, just in time for bikini season. Latino 54 airs on Wednesdays from 9 AM to 10 AM EST on WMNF 88.5 FM Tampa, and online at www.wmnf.org The show will be archived for exactly one magical week following terrestrial broadcast, before disappearing forever into the ether. I will be spinning my signature blend of old skool Afro-Cuban jazz, bugalu, and, if you behave yourself, some Eydie Gorme.
  10. Thanks all. I bit the bullet and went for the Bose. Best sound, it was on sale, nice design, and portable.
  11. He had a hell of a run. God knows how many albums I have that he played on. He is easily in my top 10 favorite piano players.
  12. Thanks for the replies. I've decided to go with this one: Seriously, I'll check out the suggestions so far.
  13. Apologies for using the word "essential" - I get annoyed with that word too! I would say that, as Latin jazz albums go, it's not all that great. OK, nothing more.
  14. I don't think I want to pay $300 for a Bose. There is a Philips for $150. Any recommendations? I basically need this for travel and vacations, nothing else. Thanks in advance.
  15. I have a pretty decent collection of Latin jazz. This album has always felt to me like they're phoning it in. Pleasant but far from essential. I never unloaded my copy, but I don't listen to it often. I should give it another chance.
  16. Universal probably didn't even know that there was a label called Argo that fell under their umbrella, until one of the 12 or 13 people who still listen to jazz approached them regarding a reissue. I'm sure they have no idea what they had or what they lost with all the mergers that occurred along the way.
  17. Sorry, I thought I was replying to the original comment.
  18. I am obsessed with this unusual ballad from BH's 1966 album "Happenings." It could fit on Tim Buckley's "Happy Sad" album.
  19. :tup Why not just shut down the board and end all conversation?
  20. TTK will be BACK on WMNF's Latino 54 for FOUR WEEKS beginning Wednesday, May 19, 2010. Latino 54 airs on Wednesdays from 9 AM to 10 AM EST on WMNF 88.5 FM Tampa, and online at www.wmnf.org Each show will be archived for exactly one magical week following terrestrial broadcast, before disappearing forever into the ether. I will be spinning my signature blend of old skool Afro-Cuban jazz, bugalu, bossa, MPB, and exotica.
  21. MJQ - Fontessa - Atlantic (green and red stereo)
  22. On the bright side, maybe we'll all be able to get higher-end audio equipment for much cheaper now, if no one is buying it. I have found nice pieces being sold at yard salesby kids who had no idea of the value.
  23. Where can I get a copy? My interest is piqued.
  24. I have this on CD and have been spinning it non stop lately.
  25. Welcome back, Clem. We've missed you.
