  1. There is a KILLER used LP store in West Philly. It opened a few years ago. Packed to the gills, odd titles, most for $5 a throw. I brought home an armload of albums last time I was there. I can't think of the name. I"m pretty sure it's on one of the numbered streets in the mid-40s, someplace around Spruce. Can anyone confirm?
  2. It seems that a number of LP covers from the 1950s seem to discolor or yellow with age. I'm thinking of things on Clef, Norgran, Emarcy, MGM. Especially LPs with the really thick cardboard. So it's hard to say.
  3. Slightly off topic: While "Sounds in Space" is basically a stereo demonstration album with outer space graphics, there is a nice discussion of postwar orchestral outer space mood music, including cover art, here: http://www.ele-mental.org/~ecc/exo/exotica/osearticle.html This sub-sub-genre has retroactively been dubbed "outer space exotica." I started a thread on this music here: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=53818
  4. I need that Baden Powell set. It's out of stock on Dusty.
  5. There are no art/graphics credits on my copy of the record - nothing on the back, and no (visible) signature on the front. I'm guessing it was done in-house. BTW, Ken Nordine provides the narration between selections.

  7. Agree on both counts. I found this for cheap and picked it up on a lark. It is a nice collection. I understand the purists' criticisms of this series. But occasionally some good thematic CD compilations get released. They are worthwhile if you can find them for cheap, and if the artist in question is one that you primarily have on vinyl. For example, I have no idea how many Stan Getz LPs I own, dozens I'm guessing. This is the only Stan Getz CD I own, not counting bossa comps. So I'm happy with this.
  8. Maybe one day I'll be nominated for my accumulation of space age bachelor pad albums...
  9. I am obsessed with the track "Dust" from that album. When DJing, it provides a nice segue between eastern-tinged sets and early 70s introspective cosmic black consciousness sets.
  10. I spun this a few times recently and I have to say I really love this album. I get a lot out of it with repeated listenings. But I also re-visited the Mark Isham soundtrack and was far less enthused about it than I was previously. In fact I unloaded it in a CD purge.
  11. Completely agree. I feel like I'm right there, and I never want the stories to end.
  12. I have an album on Arista/Freedom from I think the late 70s.
  13. Faulkner - The Bear Third time I've read this novella. Amazing on so many different levels. I've read it both including and omitting part 4 - I'm going to include part 4 this time. I think I'll be on a big Faulkner kick after I finish Raymond Chandler detox.
  14. I like some of the stories collected in the other volumes even more than "Catcher," but the latter made a huge impression on me at an impressionable age, just like finding Blue Note and Impulse! cutouts in the budget bin on my busboy's salary.
  15. Since starting this thread years ago, I have picked up Andrew!!!, Pax and Dance with Death. In addition to the two titles I mentioned in the first post. Andrew!!! with Bobby Hutcherson has made the biggest impression on me. But I love all of these albums.
  16. You must love vocals and inaudible instruments.
  17. Prompt shipping, clear communication, CDs as described. An asset to the interwebz. A+
  18. Sounds like Jack overcharged you by about three bucks. NP: Dave Pell Octet - Jazz & Romantic Places - Atlantic (black label, mono)
  19. If you never saw Combustible Edison live, you may love Pink Martini. But I've seen Combustible Edison and Pink Martini Live. Pink Martini just made me miss Combustible Edison. YMMV.
  20. Paul Desmond & Don Elliott - Fantasy (OJC reissue, mono)
  21. Not till I get to look everything over first!
  22. Vic Mizzy - The Caper of the Gold Bulls OST - Tower (stereo)
  23. Plas Johnson - This Must Be the Plas - Capitol (rainbow, mono)
  24. http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:wvfixqerldfe Are they a Music MInus One tribute band?
  25. Hugo Montenegro - Come Spy With Me - RCA (black label, mono)
