  1. Francis Lai - A Man and a Woman OST - UA (mono)
  2. pesto pizza with the Afro Blues Quintet plus 1.
  3. Mongo Santamaria - Drums and Chants: Authentic Afro-Cuban Rhythms - Tico (mono)
  4. Funny, I was tempted to name both of those tunes in my previous post, even though I haven't listened to any Miles recorded after, say, 1973. It's amazing how I can't remember to pay bills, but I can remember which 80s pop tunes Miles covered. A mind is a terrible thing to waste. It's always so embarrassing when jazz guys - in the post-rock era, at least - incorporate pop/rock tunes into their repertoire. They invariably grab for things that make a big commercial splash, but they fail to find the good things lurking beneath the surface. All the jazz Radiohead jazz covers are a prime example. It tends to expose the practice for what it is: a blatant attempt to appear relevant, even though it reveals that the jazz guys are not really aware of (or interested in) the more creative things going on under the surface of pop music.
  5. Didn't Miles cover one of the Thriller tunes during a career lowpoint? Or was it another piece of dated 80s pop?
  6. So the first two CDs have minimal laser beam wear?
  7. Currently spinning this: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...mp;#entry934011
  8. Just gave it a thorough scrub on VPI and took it for a spin. 3 bucks well spent. I'm sure all of you vinyl junkies have encountered an occasional LP like this: It looks so bad you're afraid to play it, much less pay money for it, but it turns out that most of the marks are superficial and plays surprisingly noise-free. Aside from a little noise between tracks and an occasional low-level pop, this plays through amazingly quietly. Thanks for talking me into buying this!
  9. You have to see the cover up close. Not only does he have a combover, but the art department actually enhanced his combover. Instead of giving him more hair, they just gave him a better combover.
  10. I always thought "Taking of Pelham 1-2-3" would have been much better as an Italian Polizia flick. Now's your chance...
  11. Wardell Gray - Central Avenue - Prestige (twofer)
  12. Thanks all. I picked up a less-than-pristine copy for 3 bucks. Most of the marks look superficial. I'll clean it on the VPI and report back.
  13. Was this Prestige album ever reissued on LP or CD? Either as an OJC or a 70s twofer?
  14. Christopher Scott - Switched on Bacharach - Decca (stereo) THIS is how the future sounded, circa 1969.
  15. Did anyone look at the list of target CDs from that link? How reassuring to discover that the best sounding CD technology was applied to the worst 70s and 80s corporate rock. IMHO, of course.
  16. Willie Bobo - Feelin' So Good - Verve (mono)
  17. Cal Tjader - Along Comes Cal - Verve (mono)

  19. Various CDs from the late 80s and early 90s. Yes, I've now tried them in different players and that seems to help. Thanks!
  20. For all of the drawbacks of vinyl, I can say this: I have never pulled out a clean LP after many years and had it randomly skip all over the place. Wish I could say the same for CDs. I'll come across something that I haven't heard in ages, pop it in, and - not always, but more often than I'd like - the thing randomly starts skipping. Has anyone else encountered this? I can't imagine that I'm doing anything beyond the usual with these things.
  21. Just saw one of my favorite episodes, "Walking Distance" with an amazing Bernard Herrmann score!
  22. Jim Helms - Kung Fu OST - WB
