  1. The question is who left us in the jazz community. The fact that he was in a movie scored by THEE GREAT KENYON HOPKINS earns him a higher place in the jazz community than some folks who are labeled jazz musicians. IMHO.
  2. Paul Newman
  3. That was a real steal! A box set for only $199.
  4. Because you DOUBLE the amount of groove distortion with vinyl to vinyl. Vinyl to CD has the potential of sounding good if it's done right. I've never heard of Andorran until this thread, so I wouldn't know. I do know that LPs mastered from LPs generally do not sound all that great, at least from some specific examples I can site. I'll opt for the CD issue in these instances.
  5. For what it's worth, it's pretty easy to tell when vinyl is mastered from vinyl (groove distortion on the inner grooves, for starters). I have no issue philosophically with CDs mastered from vinyl, but I really can't stand vinyl mastered from vinyl.
  6. The label is Scorpio. The albums are legitimately licensed and mastered from DATs made from the masters. A great value, especially for rare titles. I've never been disappointed, except for the odd LP that showed up in less-than-flat condition.
  7. Who even knew that 30 CDs were released in 2008?
  8. I enjoy photos of semi-nude men as much as the next guy, but in this case, I'll pass.
  9. In the alternate take of this thread, Paul Secor wrote "What Sayest Thou." I wish that was the version that was issued. "What Say You" sounds like the producers deliberately wanted to dumb it down, against the artist's intent.
  10. Thanks for sharing. Can't get me enough Sabu!
  11. Isn't it ironic that people frequently consider Burt Bacharach "easy listening;" yet the melodic, harmonic and rhythmic structures of Burt's best tunes can be WAY more challenging to musicians than many of the 32-bar AABA standards that jazz musicians often play?
  12. I have some things on vinyl, and I need to spin them again. Thanks for reminding me.
  13. One female member of this board has commented to me privately about the male-dominated aspects of this site. I won't name her, but I will add that her contributions are INVALUABLE, and I wish she would post more often. I used to date a woman who had an impressive jazz collection, along with Russ Meyer films on VHS and an original copy of Les Baxter's soundtrack to the biker flick "Hell's Belles" on American International. Not to mention some Kenyon Hopkins albums that had eluded me. I knew right away I had to marry her. We merged the record collections and traded in the duplicates for store credit at such fine establishments as my beloved Stereo Jack's. She loves it ALL, even the really out stuff (no smooth jazz though, thank God). Don't mean to gloat, but these women are out there, believe me.
  14. Your arrangements are GREAT! Jobim may not have been the best piano player in the world either, but I NEVER tire of listening to him. Taste is very important, and you clearly have that! This is a VERY cool project! Bonus points for covering HUGO MONTENEGRO!!!
  15. WOW! Really nice stuff! Congrats on both the release AND your superb taste in music!
  16. There was a nice piece on "Fresh Air" recently: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.p...toryId=97485041 In incorporates part of an earlier broadcast, including both music and a conversation between Terry Gross and McKenna. The new segments include an interview with McKenna's sister.
  17. I don't have an answer to your question, but may I add that I am obsessed with the David Snell track "International Flight" on Sound Gallery, Volume 2. That track beautifully conjures that early 70s elegant international drug cartel aesthetic.
  18. Now, break out some Piero Umiliani and Piero Piccioni! Not to mention Bruno Nicolai and a guy whose initials are E.M.
  19. How about some Johnny Zhivago or Heaven 17?
  20. Squares are not allowed to listen to "Jazz Heat Bongo Beat."
  21. They could have just spun "Kenton Plays Wagner" and make everyone in both camps miserable.
