  1. Just received my copy. Haven't opened it yet, because I'm not sure if I want to keep it. Front cover image looks clean, not like a cheap xerox or anything. Has the black connoisseur series band on the left. Above the bar code in microscopic print, it says "Manufactured by CreateSpace, Scotts Valley, CA." I'm thinking of sending it back because I didn't realize it was a CD-R at first. It's fine that Amazon sells these, but CD-R should be specified in the format, IMHO. What do think I should do?
  2. Have they reissued the groovy MPS session with latin percussion where they do "The World is a Ghetto?" That is on heavy rotation when I DJ.
  3. CD-Rs unfortunately do not have the longevity of CDs. Also, it depends on the software that was used to make the CD-R. Some are more accurate than others.
  4. How did a square like Miles ever get to record with someone as cool as Bob Dorough?
  5. Ella Wishes You a Swining Christmas - Verve
  6. I'll start off with June Christy's bittersweet holiday concept album, "This Time of Year," arranged by Thee Great Pete Rugolo. Hard to find for many years, it was reissued on CD a few years back. Your turn.
  7. I have lots and lots of Atlantic R&B and soul in my collection. I am also at a point in my life in which I don't want to spend money for overplayed hits. Compilations that are arranged conceptually or artistically mean much more to me than greatest hits collections. From what I'm hearing, this new compilation is worth getting.
  8. Thanks. This set seems to be less "hit" focused, unlike the earlier massive set.
  9. Anyone have this box set from Rhino Handmade? http://www.amazon.com/Atlantic-Soul-1959-1...3963&sr=1-2 Curious to hear any comments.
  10. Listening now to some groovy French stuff from the early 70s, aging EZ guys trying to get hip to the sounds of today! Much more edgy and compelling than the stuff that actual sweaty hippies were releasing during the same time.
  11. Wait'll you guys get a load of the Trans Siberian Orchestra. http://www.trans-siberian.com/intro.html
  12. Not to be contrary, but I defend an arranger's right to re-arrange anything, regardless of the results. If an arranger chooses to dumb something down, we can choose to not buy it and to not listen to it. And if an arranger improves a composition, all the better.
  13. Allen, glad to see you're including a Rudy Rae Moore soundtrack!
  14. Closer To It is my fave Oblivion Express album.
  15. I really like this album. Love the one title, "Miles Behind."
  16. A twofer of "The Reporter" and "East Side West Side" by the greatest jazz arranger you've never heard.
  17. Strictly speaking, a CD-R is not an "Audio CD." If they can legitimately sell CD-Rs on Amazon, they should at least specify that in the format field rather than in the small print.
  18. This set is my record collection. I'm delighted to see that a French radio station has inherited my good taste.
  19. Freddie Hubbard - Blue Spirits - Blue Note (mono)
  20. It IS about the music but, for some of us, it also about the complete aesthetic experience.
  21. It's hard for me to shell out significant money - for me - for something that doesn't have the original artwork. Think of it as less competition for limited edition releases.
