  1. Martial Solal and the European All Stars (French Telefunken mono). It's a good one, Brownie!
  2. Eddie Harris, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Vee Jay stereo
  3. Thanks for reminding me of this. I only played it once or twice but remember liking it.
  4. Isn't he Arthur Schwartz's son? (of Schwartz/Dietz fame?)
  5. Yes, it's his profile at the piano, black background.
  6. Just picked up "Martial Solal and the European All Stars" on what appears to be a French Telefunken LP (purple label, mono. Recorded in Berlin May 21, 1961. Anyone know anything about this? I haven't spun it yet.
  7. They're both great, and the Mandel album is even better than the combo. There is/was a CD twofer (Rykodisc maybe?) that combined both LPs on a single CD.
  8. http://www.cnn.com/2007/LAW/02/08/specter....l.ap/index.html
  9. Not to mention the album he did with Michel Legrand.
  10. It was on past my beddy-bye time in our PBS market, and I don't remember how to program my antiquated VCR anymore. It's always been very interesting to me that a number of brilliant composer/arranger/orchestrators have had these collaborative relationships, and that in many cases there is some mystery as to who contributed what to the finished product.
  11. What do you think of this? I generally prefer the Beatles in mono right up through Hey Jude and Revolution, but I'm disappointed by the White Album in mono. It seems like the stereo release took priority on this one. Don't mean to rain on your parade, but I'm just curious.
  12. PEPPER SPRAY?!? How embarrassing for an astronaut. Why didn't she use a phaser?
  13. I think there's a wacky 60s comedy in the making, with Mad-magazine style poster art, and possibly starring Don Knotts as the male lead.
  14. Me to. I recently blasted "Hocus Pocus" at a very high volume. But seriously, Getz's Focus is one my favorites of the non-bossa albums.
  15. A brilliant one that I don't think was mentioned is his collaboration with the great Michel Legrand:
  16. Unlike many jazz albums from period that fell onto either the commercial or artistic side of the fence, this one has it all. Groovy chillout background music if that's what you want, or something you can sink your teeth into if you're giving it your undivided. Gorgeous arrangements and instrumental textures, using jazz and turkish instruments. He did a similar album called the "Wailing Dervishes" soon after, which is also recommended. The good news is that they have both been reissued on CD. The bad news is they have been reissued on Collectibles, and the two albums were not paired together. Collectibles does not know how to do twofer reiussues.
  17. Has anyone mentioned my favorite? Circa 1966-67. Superb arrangements by Arif Mardin.
  18. Do you have any idea if "Stress" is currently available on anything?
  19. ZODIAC Original Motion Picture Score Music Composed by David Shire ZODIAC features the exciting return to the cinema of composer David Shire (Taking of Pelham, All the President's Men, McCloud). It’s a darkly mysterious and beautiful score bringing back memories of crime thrillers of the 70s and Shire’s best, most probing work. Specially recorded for this CD is a piano theme Mr. Shire composed for the film but was not used as part of the final score. Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. open ZODIAC nationwide on March 2. Catalog #: Varese 302 066 799 2 Release Date: 03/13/07
  20. Thanks for the quick replies! We're off to a good start! 2 questions: 1 - Did AH ever record with Bobby Hutcherson? 2 - Did AH record much as a sideman for Blue Note? I don't think any of my Blue Note LPs have him as a sideman, but then again I still have many to get.
  21. I have "Point of Departure" on CD and an Arista/Freedom album on vinyl. What should I get next? Any concensus on which titles are essential?
  22. Has anyone mentioned this one yet? One of my favorite Euro jazz soundtracks of this period. Does anyone know anything about his collaboration with French composer Marius Constant titled "Stress?"
  23. Quarteto Em Cy, Ed Marre de Cy, Elenco LP ME-41, mono
