Looking at other books in this series I saw Michael Sparke's book on Kenton. Larry, I think you may have mentioned it before. What's the assessment? Worth getting?

A pianist who could be counted on to make any session he was on outstanding. His recordings with Sonny Stitt are still among my favorites of all time. He lived long and very, very well. RIP.

Very good point to recognize his contributions as producer and A&R man.
And I for one enjoy Nat's son's singing and playing and writing I have heard.
Cannonball did the liners for a few of the original Vee Jay hard bop records which I think he might have produced. And of course, he did a lot of work for Riverside. He really was active on that score.
I suggested that Mosaic do a Cannonball Capitol set, but I guess it would be too big.

It was about a month ago I think - I got an email about it. Alas, have never been able to attend one (for obvious reasons).
Me neither, not because I'm on the other side of the pond, but because I'm on the other side of the country!
Appreciated this article. Like Lon, I hope they're around as long as I am.

Just saw Branagh's "Belfast." Excellent movie. Highly recommended!

Too bad Boots Randolph is gone. He could use this technology to issue a new version of "Yakety Sax" with a zombiefied John Coltrane dueting with him.........
Though, on his worst day, Boots was worlds better than Gorelick.

It is just SO weird that we can't preorder this one. I think Lon must be right. It must have something to do with the partnership with DOT Time. After all, Mosaic has used preorders recently to decide how many sets to produce.

I've been lucky enough to get all the Basie Mosaics covering the first Verve period and all the Roulettes (as well as much of, but not all of, the Old Testament stuff). I love all of those. As for later, I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the Quincy Jones arranged "Lil Ol' Groovemaker." Once upon a time--many many moons ago--that was my favorite record. I also like the Dots. The stuff with the latter-day Mills Brothers is fun.

And so, the curtain falls --
"I love being a singer!" That brought a bit of mist to my eyes. He has had an epic career.

Re Stitt's competitiveness, Laurie Pepper has some interesting things to say about Art's session with Stitt in the notes for the Hollywood All-Star Sessions box. She makes it clear that Stitt made Pepper very nervous, and that it was his least favorite of those sessions, even though he played pretty well.
I wonder if Stitt's brief flirtation with the Varitone hurt him a little with critics and listeners. I always thought it was a gimmick and was glad when he jettisoned it.

Certainly readable, but not in the same class as the Hampton Hawes IMHO.
I haven't read the Hawes book, but I did enjoy (if that's the word!) reading O'Day's book. She had quite the life, no doubt about it.

He was simply brilliant in "Network," for which he received an oscar nomination.

Only slightly less a profanation b/c Joe Beck had the flayva already, no need to bare the (w)hoariest of cliches in the arrangement.
But still...totally unnecessary and pretty unpleasant. Joe Beck/Esther Phillips, there was some room to work there. Joe Beck/Sinatra...not really.
A bit better live, but not by much...
One of those guys should have booked Keith Mansfield. The we might be able to discuss seriously.
So, I'm gone traveling for a few weeks, and I return to the Board to find.....this....... I think I might have to leave again!

Chronological Classics you say? 😉
Loved listening to this, but it's interesting how much it sounds like Paul Whiteman until the swinging trumpet solo at the end!

This one sounded a bit less Whitemanish. Thanks for posting these, Chewy!
