I think this is pretty much it, or at least the most reasonable inference. (Though I think you could make an interesting argument that Wayne Shorter's playing "Miles-ified" during his years with the group.) FWIW, I disagree with Rooster's placing of George Coleman's playing with Mobley. On those recordings George has a very robust sound. Guy

many people who dig jazz are weird

Why? Guy -
Not sure who else is familiar with the News of the Weird column, but I've been reading it off and on since I was 14. Some classic stuff on there. From this week's edition:

Culture shock? I'm in yuppy central, so not so much. I have been shocked by the number of beautiful women walking around, but I have been living in New Haven for the past seven years. Guy -

Charles Mingus Sextet, Live at Cornell U 1964
Guy Berger replied to Guy Berger's topic in New Releases
Really? I've never heard anybody suggest this. Guy Pardon my phrasing...over-recorded is not what I meant to say. I've heard some small gripes from fellow jazz lovers that although everyone loves this group, they wish that some live recordings of other Mingus groups would surface as opposed to just this group, who already has many recordings availiable. I'd like to hear more live material from other phases of Mingus' life as well, but don't get me wrong....I think this was his best group and I hope they continue to find/release more! This new release is wonderful...an incredible discovery. Well, that I can't disagree with -- I would love more recordings from the 1959 band. (Though maybe I should listen to that 1959 Newport Festival recording that I downloaded a few years ago and never listened to!) -

Let's just say that it would take a lot of corrupt refs to change the outcome of that one. Guy -
Charles Mingus Sextet, Live at Cornell U 1964

He did this on The Great Concert of Charles Mingus as well. I'm guessing this was a regular "routine", but am not that familiar with other recordings from this tour. Guy -
Dan, I just like this music and it's hard for me to express exactly why. I really Coltrane's saxophone tone during this period, and the intellectual density/rigor of his playing. (That intellectual density/rigor is something I don't hear in some other free jazz saxophonists.) I like his playing with the Tyner/Garrison/Jones rhythm section on the 1965 quartet recordings (they only got better) and his rapport with Rashied Ali. Though I'll don't feel a direct connection to the spirituality expressed in the music, I do completely sense the passion behind it. When I first discovered this music I listened to it ALL THE TIME. These days, I'll put it on the stereo whenever I feel like it. Guy

Yup. That's a huge range of music that Trane packed into these two and a half years. A range that most artists don't produce in their entire careers. I hear less "fury" in the '66 recordings than in the late '65 recordings. Guy

I hate to deprive Allen of income, but the 2nd CD (a bootleg, I believe) is probably available online for free. Guy -
Though Jesus was also Jewish, I don't think he wore plaid. Assessments of his hipness probably belong in the politics forum. Guy

Is anybody on this board a Harper's subscriber? I am looking for an article from their archives (November 1982, written by PJ O'Rourke). You would have my deep gratitude. Thanks Guy

Maybe I'm much more jaded than the rest of you, but this doesn't have much of an effect on my opinion of NBA officiating. Guy -
Not a crazy thought... It'd be awesome if it's Chuck. Guy

I'm guessing this isn't available on CD? I may have to look for an MP3 copy. How does the music compare to Kloss's two albums w/Corea/Holland/DeJohnette? Guy

Yikes. If I came across as some sort of Jarrett "fanboy" that was definitely not my intent. To summarize: 1) I have no problem if someone dislikes Jarrett's music. Different strokes and all. I personally don't like all of it, as I'm sure you can find out if you comb the archives. 2) I have no interest in defending Jarrett the person. He's a putz. 3) I do think that people's opinions of his music are affected by extramusical factors (as you can see from this thread) -- his obnoxious personality, his pretentious blatherings, his financial success, his occasionally cult-like followers, etc. That's completely human, but it needs to be acknowledged. 4) I also think that blanket "objective" dismissals of his work, dismissals of his contribution to his music (ie "group X works in spite of his playing"), or the even stronger suggestion that he's an (artistic) phony are BS. (The obvious implication of these arguments is that the many people who seem to genuinely love his music are 'wrong'.) 5) Many of the "objective" criticisms directed against his music could easily be directed at other more "politically correct" pianists or musicians. (For example, Jarrett vs. Herbie's gospellisms. Or Jarrett vs. Byard on the eclectic nature of their playing.) 6) Hopefully if any other musician came under unfair criticism on this board, I'd act in exactly the same way. Guy
