  1. These are two of my favorites as well. I also like the cover on Larry Young's Unity. Guy
  2. Oh shit. I hope he makes a quick recovery. Guy
  3. As long as it's up--how is that Holland/Phillips album? I've seen it everywhere, but I'm somewhat tentative on what seems (up front) like it could be mismatch. This album is (surprisingly) available on yourmusic.com, so you can try it out for cheap. I have it but haven't listened yet. Guy
  4. YES!!!! Guy
  5. What about the John Handys for Roulette? Guy
  6. I just saw "Death's Head Revisited". Really powerful. I'm surprised they were able to tackle the topic of the Holocaust (without any whitewashing) on network TV. Guy
  7. I've been listening to all three of the bootlegged Fillmore West shows (4/9, 4/11, 4/12) and I'll be damned if Black Beauty wasn't the runt of the litter! Even without Wayne this was a great band. Guy
  8. Hasn't Nelson coached them in the past? Yup, the Run TMC era (and then one year w/Chris Webber). They haven't made it to the playoffs since he left, over a decade ago. Guy
  9. Great news for Warriors fans! Mike Montgomery is gone, Don Nelson is going to coach next year! Guy
  10. I downloaded this OOP ECM album recently. My first exposure to Bailey. Lots of scraping. I liked it! Guy
  11. I downloaded this OOP album and just listened to it for the first time. Wow, this is great music! Highly recommended to fans of Herbie Hancock's more atmospheric 1971-73 music. I'm now really psyched about Julian Priester's Love Love, which I bought earlier this summer. Haven't listened to it yet. Guy
  12. There was recently a thread on this. Guy
  13. Somebody posted on AAJ that Pip Pyle, drummer for several prog rock bands (National Health, Hatfield & the North), passed away last night. RIP. Guy
  14. I'm listening to the April 12, 1970 gig by the Miles Davis sextet at the Fillmore West. (Two days after Black Beauty was recorded.) Steve Grossman plays a really nice tenor solo on "Directions", maybe the only one I've heard from his tenure on Miles. His soprano playing during this period doesn't do much for me aside from "texture". It's too bad Miles was so fixated on the soprano during this period! Guy
  15. link Looks like there are some good shows there this fall. I'll definitely be at the Osby/Cyrille, maybe also at the Ben Allison. Guy
  16. I tried doing this with my CD but now I have little plastic bits everywhere. Guy
  17. I was having a debate with my friends over this album. I insisted on side 1. On the other hand, two of my friends said "side 2 is clearly better". Guy
  18. I think #7 is my favorite Sibelius symphony. #4 is a close second. Guy
  19. 7 only has one movement. Sibelius has lots of haunting, heavenly melodies. Guy
  20. I actually had a Samuel Smith taddy (?) porter tonight. It was good. I don't think I've had a SS before. Guy
  21. (1) The Sinatra and Zappa are there because I picked the 100 highest-rated jazz recordings from a more generic highest-rated recordings list on rateyourmusic. I could have omitted them, making space for a few more recordings. Nevertheless, I felt they were close enough to jazz to merit inclusion. (2) I don't understand the "too many listings by the same artists" argument. Some artists recorded a lot of classic albums. Guy
  22. If you want to see the best part of the movie, here's a brief youtube clip. Guy
  23. Joe Lovano's solo on "Folk Song for Rosie" is one of the best I've heard from him... damn. Guy
