    Brubeck

Put me in the like him, don't love him category. Guy
  2. I finally got around to hearing Lovano and Harrell's "Shades of Jazz", performed with a pianoless quartet. It's a fun little romp, and I like both horn players, but boy does it fall short of the original (and for that matter, the alternate take). Guy
  3. My BMG settlement shipped today: MOTIAN, PAUL BAND GARDEN OF EDEN ROLLINS, SONNY BRIDGE - REMASTER. TAYLOR, CECIL CONQUISTADOR! MCLEAN, JACKIE CONSEQUENCE (REMAS
  4. Looks like it to me too. Guy
  5. When internet and real world friends collide! I caught two sets of the Paul Motian trio tonight at the Village Vanguard. They played "Misterioso", "Jack of Clubs", "I Have the Room Above Her", "Monk's Mood", "Body and Soul", "Yahllah" (played with a rock-ish beat -- maybe this is how "Miles Runs the Voodoo Down" would have sounded like with Motian on drums), "Dance", "Drum Music", and a bunch of tunes I didn't recognize. Motian himself was terrific -- he was particularly brilliant on "Body and Soul". I spoke to him after the show and he mentioned that a new album has already been recorded for ECM and will be coming out in January. Good to run into David (7/4) again, one of the fellow Motian nuts on the board. Guy
  6. Ali G fans have probably already seen this, but here's a segment where Borat learns about American dating. Here he learns about American democracy. "In Kazakhstan, women can vote but horse cannot!" Guy
  7. Happy birthday, Adam. Guy
  8. I seem to recall that I like volume 2 better than volume 1. Which one has "A Night in Tunisia"? (Or is that on the Bohemia sets?) "Confirmation" is terrific. Guy
  9. Good to hear you are (or will soon be) alright, Paul. Guy
  10. Interesting. Given your professed dislike for Mr. Jarrett, what were you doing there? For the sidemen? Guy
  11. I still don't know what I'm doing. Maybe I'll just see you there. Alright -- I'll look out for you there. It's gonna be awesome! Guy
  12. I saw this as well and dug it a lot. I'm a big fan of Quadrophenia. I was surprised at how Daltrey's voice was in decent shape. Guy
  13. Alright... I made a reservation for me and 3 friends Thursday @ 9 PM (one more may be joining us for the second set). If anyone wants to join our group, PM me asap. Guy
  14. "Juicio", not "Juice". Agreed, it's a nice one. A rare appearance by Dewey on alto on "Gypsy Moth". It's also available from Collectables on a 2-on-1 with the earlier, excellent trio album Life Between the Exit Signs. Guy
  15. I am listening to this, seeded by our very own Ron Lyles on the site-which-must-not-be-named. Great music and prime-era Dewey. Setlist is "The Rich (and the Poor)", "Death and the Flower", and "Angles (without Edges)". Guy
  16. Somebody posted this on AAJ: No clue how reliable this is, hopefully this is just a false rumor. Guy
  17. I'm glad to see that Bonds is juicing again! Go Giants! Guy
  18. Guy I just saw the price tag on this set in yesterday's Times- $35 plus a $10 minimum. OUCH!!! any interest in Friday's sets? I have to get up early on Friday so Thursday may be prohibitive. Yeah, the weekend price is the main reason I am inclined to come on Thursday. That, and there is always a chance to stay for the second set paying only another minimum. Guy

    Dewey Left Town!

One of my favorite Dewey Redman moments is at the end of Keith Jarrett's Survivor's Suite, where Dewey states (wails, really) the final theme over the rumbling rhythm section. First time he plays it straight, then more loosely the second time. It's really powerful. Guy

    Dewey Left Town!

Thanks for the great music, Dewey. & Guy
  21. Excellent choice -- I haven't listened to these in a while. Guy
  22. These are two of my favorites as well. I also like the cover on Larry Young's Unity. Guy
  23. Oh shit. I hope he makes a quick recovery. Guy
  24. As long as it's up--how is that Holland/Phillips album? I've seen it everywhere, but I'm somewhat tentative on what seems (up front) like it could be mismatch. This album is (surprisingly) available on yourmusic.com, so you can try it out for cheap. I have it but haven't listened yet. Guy
