But on the flipside, Phoenix only won 29 (28?) games last year and won 62 this year -- that's a much bigger turnaround than the Heat. It's fair to say that without the Shaq trade, Miami would still be a playoff team. Without signing Nash, Phoenix is lottery-bound. And yeah, I know that Dallas was better this year than last year, but besides losing Nash they also added Jason Terry, Jerry Stackhouse, Erick Dampier and Keith Van Horn. Guy

That means you're only 26?!? Damn Guy, I always thought you were much older by your posts. That's a compliment, by the way!!! Thanks Jim. While taking a break from grading, I took advantage of the free NY Times archive and dug out some more details about that game: I was wrong, by the way -- Manute did not shoot a 3 pointer in this game. The Warriors had 7 technicals total.

This is unrelated to current playoff madness, but I found a pretty cool website that has pretty much any NBA facts/stats you'll ever want. The reason I was looking for it is because in 1990, my dad took me and my brother (we were 11 and 8 at the time) to a Warriors-Suns game. The Warriors (who were a decent team at the time -- Nellie was the coach, Run TMC etc) lost, which sucked. But the game is memorable because (A) the Warriors got a lot of technical fouls -- at least 6, maybe 10 (obviously Don Nelson got ejected), and (B) Tom Frickin' Chambers scored 56 points (!!!). Unfortunately I can't find a box score or game recaps for this thing, but it happened on this day. I also think Manute Bol shot a 3-pointer but I may be confusing it with another game. Guy

Well, it looks like the ban passed: -
Perhaps the same reason Johnny Hodges stopped playing soprano sax? Didn't Hodges stop playing ss because Duke wouldn't pay him as a "doubler"? Guy

The flipside is that it made something of a comeback with free jazz. Guy

What about Zony Mash? (I haven't heard them, only of them.) The recommendations of Abercrombie, MMW and Lifetime are excellent. Guy

No "SWLABR" or "Tales of Brave Ulysses"??? Guy

Jim, Is this CD the one you are talking about? P.S. Has anyone heard Wynton Marsalis's version of this tune? I heard the 1 minute clip on amazon and it's not especially promising... Guy

I'd say the best is Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants (which is really a basic staple of post-war jazz), followed by Bags' Groove and Walkin'. I'd put the BN studio studio sessions below those. Other stuff of note off the top of my head -- the Dig session with Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins and Jackie McLean. And the Collector's Items album; this one has both Bird and Sonny Rollins on tenor, as well as a later (excellent) session with Rollins. Guy

Depends on how good your furniture is, I guess. Unlike your copy of the Andrew Hill Mosaic, most of this stuff is pretty replaceable and a pain in the ass to move. Guy

I'm don't think he is black... not that it matters, really. Guy

So, I take it you have bought all the cds you want and are looking for more. Why do you say that Chuck? Are they trading officially available material? Guy I was asking if he/she had bought (or at least owned) every recording "they" could have wanted and now "needed" more, hence downloads. Speaking for myself, I don't have every recording I want. Some of them are available for download at easytree and nowhere else (except possibly via time- and resource-consuming trading), hence I get them via easytree. Guy

I think I like the Hodges on "Half the Fun" even better. This is a great album. Guy

Probably excessive to ban him, but Van Gundy's behavior has been way out of line. Guy

I don't think the Mavs-Rockets series is over by any stretch though. And yeah, that foul on Duncan was ridiculous. TERRIBLE OFFICIATING last night. And Ginobili is terrific -- some of the Nuggets fouls on him have been ridiculous. So what about Van Gundy... is he going to spend next year in NBA jail? Guy

I haven't seen new ECM reissues for a very long time. 85% of their catalog is available, and the remaining OOP titles will probably never be reissued on CD. Some Steve Kuhn reissues were announced on jazzmatazz but never materialized. I'm referring to straight reissues of older titles. I recall looking for some Keith Jarrett titles in late 2000 or early 2001 and was told that they were being reissued that year. Nothing different, same mastering, packaging, etc., just reissued. I think this is when they changed distributor from BMG to Universal -- they deleted the BMG versions and replaced them with Universal versions. Not really reissues... Guy

Mavs are lucky they didn't call out-of-bounds on Finley... Steve Kerr is a great announcer. Guy

In fact, Bertrand lives inside said Cream of Wheat box -- hence, no room. Guy

"Shimwisery" is "Chinoiserie", a la French. I think "rikki tikki" has nothing to do with the mongoose, Duke is simply describing the sound of piano playing. I imagine that you could rip it onto CD without the first 1:30 or whatever. (Also, fastforwarding on the iPod is very convenient.) MMW do a pretty cool version of this tune on Friday Afternoon in the Universe. Guy

I think it's from the Hary Janos Suite, composed by Zoltan Kodaly. Didn't Coltrane borrow from two different classical compositions when writing the melody of "Impressions"? Guy
