  1. No, that was 104 ppg against an elite defensive team (the Spurs) during the playoffs. You'd have to assume that either the Pistons would be much more effective than the Spurs against the Suns' offense, or that the Pistons would suddenly become an offensive juggernaut. Guy
  2. But let's not exaggerate how stymied the Suns' offense was -- it's relative to their usual production. They still averaged 104 ppg in this series. Detroit was something like 6-12 (33% winning percentage) this season when their opponent scored 100 pts. Guy
  3. Hey dude, they're still the 2nd best team in the NBA. Neither Miami nor Detroit could beat them in a 7 game series. Guy ← I do not agree. Either the Pistons or the Heat would kill the Suns. They do not play defense and they have no solution for teams that play defense against them. They would be lucky to win one game against either team. ← They handily beat the Grizzlies, a defense-oriented team (one that many people predicted would give the Suns headaches). The Heat and the Pistons are better than the Grizzlies, not nearly as good as the Spurs. Hence I think the Suns would probably beat either team. Guy
  4. The Grizzlies were known as a good defensive team -- 6th best in the NBA in defensive efficiency. The Suns ran all over them. The Spurs are unusual because they're a good team at the Suns' type of game. There aren't many other teams in the NBA that can do that -- probably none. I think all 3 of these teams teams would consistently make the conference finals if not the finals if they were in the east. (The Kings, not anymore, but 2 or 3 years ago.) The western conference has been much, much more challenging in the past five or six years, and at their best they've consistently gotten more wins than the #2 teams in the east (and occasionally the #1) while facing much tougher opposition. ???? This eastern conference had 3 (if you include the Pacers with Artest), maybe 4 teams (Bulls borderline) that could have made the playoffs in the western conference. The Bulls lost to the Suns by an average of 19 points/game this season. Guy
  5. Hey dude, they're still the 2nd best team in the NBA. Neither Miami nor Detroit could beat them in a 7 game series. Guy
  6. 1. Haven't you noticed all the "Teo edits" being restored (Miles, Monk, Mingus) - and which Miles albums are you including in "classics". No edits, no Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. As far as "classics", Bitches Brew, In a Silent Way and the Gil/Miles collaborations come to mind, though edits pop up on other Columbia albums here and there. Guy
  7. It's been said a bunch of times already, but the sound is fine as long as you're not too sensitive to high-end buzz. Guy
  8. Maybe FD isn't a lurker here, but rather posting under an alias. Clem has been trying to throw us off the whole time! Guy
  9. Very nice suggestions. I think the first few Weather Report albums (Weather Report, Live in Tokyo, I Sing the Body Electric, Sweetnighter, Mysterious Traveller) are also essential, as are various Miles Davis recordings from 1969-1975. Some of the best jazz recorded during this period. Guy
  10. Very interesting... thanks for posting that. Guy
  11. Thanks for resurrecting this thread, Moose -- I missed it the 1st time around. I haven't bought a Cuneiform CD in at least 3 or 4 years but it was nice to see them on there. Guy
  12. Is this the same penthouse in Lincoln Center where they've had smaller J@LC gigs for the last few years? Two years ago I caught two sets of the Herbie Nichols Project up there for $10 (student rush). Hard to beat the view, though the atmosphere was a little pretentious. Guy
  13. Anybody who's read the liner notes to All My Relations is probably familiar with this story, but here it is:
  14. Why is this thread blank? Guy
  15. I'd really like to have a complete Charles Lloyd + Chico Hamilton on Columbia select or big box. Guy
  16. I don't think that's what Bruce meant -- he's just trying to point out that having Shaq on your team, even in his prime, was not a guaranteed championship. Or even guaranteed success in the playoffs (making it out of the 2nd round). Guy
  17. * What's up with that weird intro to "Mr. Gone"? * "Young and Fine" has a decent Wayne solo. Too bad the song sucks. Guy
  18. I think the Suns will win game 5, I don't see them taking game 6 though. Pistons will win tomorrow. Guy
  19. Somebody pointed out to me that, if (as seems likely) the finals feature Miami vs. San Antonio, this will be a continuation of the Shaq-Duncan championship duopoly that's been in force, with the exception of last year's blip, since Jordan retired. Crazy. Guy
  20. Hey, no Larry Brown = no championship last year. Guy
  21. A few days ago I ordered Dave Holland's "Jumpin' In". Guy
  22. And I'd much rather hear the Chick Corea who played with Miles Davis than either of those... Guy
  23. Wasn't there one with Wayne Shorter? ← I was in shock until I realized you were respoinding to the "commentary" question, not the Led Zeppelin album question... ← I think he's the guy playing drums on "Moby Dick". Guy
  24. Interesting article. I wish the NY Times had printed Redman's entire list -- which Led Zeppelin album did he put on there? Has the Times done similar "favorite album" commentaries for anyone else besides Metheny and Redman? Guy
