  1. We had a brief discussion about this set a few months ago. Summary: it's worth it if you like the other live Trane from this period. Guy
  2. And yet musicians like Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Charlie Haden, Bill Frisell, Joe Lovano and many others have gone out of their way to play with him. Evidently they disagree with you about the proper "way to play jazz". Your assumption throughout this thread has been that there's a proper way to play jazz drums and hence Paul Motian fails as a jazz drummer. I'd say instead that your assumption has failed and that it's time to re-examine it. For what it's worth, the whole "change for the sake of change" argument is a red herring -- Motian's innovations are for the sake of the music, and it's goooooood. Guy
  3. Like Mike I'm puzzled by JPF's complaints, which are identical to those levelled at, say, Dizzy Gillespie or Charlie Parker in the 40s. Who determines what an instrument should or shouldn't sound like? As long as Motian does what he likes and what the people around him like, what's the problem? As a bonus the music sounds great! Guy
  4. WRONG!! Phil Jackson's playing career went through New York and they won championships in the duration. He has strong ties to the Knicks. (to answer your question, I don't know who started it) Well, if Jackson really does decide to go coach a team saddled with terrible contracts, mediocre players and the worst GM in the league (even worse than the previous Knicks GM!!), then he's much stupider than we all thought. I don't expect him to coach the Lakers either but that's much, much more likely than the Knicks. Guy
  5. Kind of unrelated, but who is coming up with this "Phil Jackson might coach the Knicks next year" crap? How much did Isiah Thomas pay Jackson for that meeting? Jackson has a higher likelihood of coaching an NHL team than coaching the Knicks. Guy
  6. Very good movie, not great. If you like political thrillers you will like this. Sean Penn is very good as expected. And Nicole... Guy
  7. Yeah I can't believe it. Looks like it's going to be Houston vs. Phoenix in the 2nd round, and Houston's played very well against the Suns. Got to give T-Mac his due, he's been terrific. Guy
  8. Wow... I've never used iTunes, but I might be tempted to buy a few. That way I don't get stuck with "Silas Stingy". If you had to recommend just 4 or 5 tracks, which ones? I figure "I Can See for Miles" and "Tattoo" are essential. What else? Guy
  9. Wow... I just listened to some clips from this on amazon. The Who Sell Out is one of my favorite albums by that band and it sounds like she does a really good/interesting job on the tunes. Seems like a bit of a novelty, though, not sure I want to blow 15 bucks on it. Guy
  10. Wow... Monk & Trane live in '57. And unlike the Five Spot CD Blue Note released a while back, this looks like the real thing! Guy
  11. I doubt it. Phoenix, Dallas, San Antonio are going to beat any eastern team because they are better. Houston is a bit of a sleeper but Dallas played exceptionally poorly in that 1st game and I really don't expect that continue. Guy
  12. I still have a tough time seeing the Spurs blowing this series, but it's gonna be a good one. Go Nuggets. Guy
  13. SERIOUSLY.... 1 for 16??? The Kings actually have to be feeling pretty good about that. Bibby had one of the worst games of his Kings career and they still almost won. I still think the Mavs are going to come back. Guy
  14. That first quarter lead they had yesterday is as close as Philly will get to winning this series. Kind of disappointed in Dirk N. Guy
  15. Uh oh... Tom, now that young Christopher is onto your scheme and will be stalking the Kenny G bin you're going to have to come up with a new plan... Guy
  16. So, at age 16 or 18 or whatever - why be so arrogant to post a thread like this? You need to develope some respect for your audience. I started listening seriously to this music around 30 years before you were born. Why waste our time? Take some time and grow the fuck up. Chuck, Go easy on the kid. I think he just meant to have a fun thread where we post our favorites, not any sort of serious/arrogant assessment of "the greatest of all time". Guy
  17. He plays (and I mean PLAYS) on two Tyner albums, Expansions and Extensions. He matches wits with Sam Rivers on Tony Williams's Spring. And he also shows up on a few albums by Lee Morgan and Donald Byrd. I'm sure I'm missing one or two other BN sideman appearances. Guy
  18. Why do you think Aric got banned from this board? In the interests of good fun, here's a list of the 5 tenor saxophonists I like the most these days 1. Wayne Shorter 2. John Coltrane 3. Dewey Redman 4. Charles Lloyd 5. Sonny Rollins
  19. Wasn't he the guy that played in Dizzy's band in the early 50s? Guy
  20. I watched ten minutes of the Philly-Pistons game. Isn't there a mercy rule to end a series after 1 game if it's just too boring to watch? Guy
  21. It's kind of weird that they would lump classics like Extensions, Expansions and Asante on a box with a high price tag and limited circulation while releasing his two weakest BN albums (Time for Tyner and Tender Moments) as individual discs.... Guy
  22. Top 50????? How about top 5? I definitely wouldn't put it in the top 5 or even 10. Not a diss against the album by any means; depends on what you like, I guess. Guy
  23. If I had to pick 10 favorites from this list, I'd say: The Real McCoy Now He Sings Now He Sobs Black Fire Genius of Modern Music Vol. 2 Ju ju Right Now Fuschia Swing Song Live at the Golden Circle Vol. 1 Midnight Blue Blue Train I recommend avoiding Grant Green's Am I Blue. It's not very good. Guy
  24. Exactly... Detroit's loss to Charlotte is somewhat comparable to the Lakers' losses in the finals. Guy
  25. Soul Station is a classic of the mellow hard bop style. Definitely belongs in a top 50 BN recordings list. In'n'Out is very good as well but not as much as Inner Urge or Our Thing. I'm not sure what else is in the yourmusic catalogue. Guy
