In the hypothetical case posited by that article, I.e. leaving them to your kids, just sign in on whatever device they're using and authorize it. It will take all of five seconds out of your day.

Just convert the FLAC files to ALAC if you want to play them in iTunes. One album takes about a minute to convert. Neal, you own the files you buy. DRM died several years ago.

I suppose, Rooster. I've just never encountered this headache of which you speak. And many of my digital files go back almost 20 years.

It's awful, isn't it? I don't believe there is a single poster here who hasn't complained about it at least once. -
Right, but what I'm saying is that if you've gone through multiple format changes, and multiple operating systems, over multiple decades, perhaps you're doing it wrong. I switched from Wind'ohs to OS X/iOS a couple of years ago and had thousands of mp3's. All I had to do was import them to iTunes which took less than an hour. I found other things to do while they transferred. No file format changes were necessary because iTunes plays mp3's. I had one album in FLAC that I had to transfer to ALAC. Took about a minute. As for the overhead, I paid less for my digital files than you did for your CD's. I can spare it. I'm not saying your way is wrong, or that mine is right. Just trying to give a little perspective for those who may be contemplating the pros and cons of each.

I think you may be over-thinking this a bit. You can now store all of your files remotely. And if you purchase your stuff from iTunes, it's permanently on their servers just in case you somehow lose them. There is also external HD's where you can back up everything. Etc, etc... Your CD's are no more of a physical media than my Western Digital external HD. Your argument sounds more like "THAT'S why I hold onto all my 8-tracks. Does anyone honestly think they'll still be listening to CD's a decade from now?" As for porting them across multiple operating systems... Like what? Wind'ohs and Mac which have been around for decades, and are still the rulers of the market? Besides, you can play your digital music files on any operating system under the sun. They all recognize mp3. The only quibble would be that Wind'ohs recognizes FLAC but not ALAC. And OS X the exact opposite. Either way, no big deal as changing the formats is nice and easy.

Actually (Ollie) is completely flappable. Rollie proved that years ago. He does have a nice butt, though. Always a plus. -

Funny part is that none of the folks being referred to as newbies are really even newbies. They just didn't use this as their primary JAzz BBS. Blue Train has the most recent sign up date and that was three years ago. (thelil) might be the newest regular poster, but he's had an account here for 6 years. -

Chrome worked fine up until the last update. Then I started getting the "red warning screen of death", forgotten passwords on multiple sites, and constant and consistent crashes. I'm still a huge fan of the full version of Chrome, mostly because I prefer the faster stripped down browsers (had been using Opera for years before Chrome came out). But, Safari is both faster and more stable on iOS. At least that's been my experience. -

Yep, that's a good one too! Think I'll have to make the trip up this year. Last time we were there the Gerald Wilson Orchestra capped off Saturday night, then Ornette closed out the festival. This year's line up isn't quite on that level, but pretty darn solid. -

iPad driving me bonkers

Same here. I use my iPad and iPhone to post here around 80% of the time. I had problem with remaining signed in when I was using Chrome, but I was just having a boatload of problems with Chrome in general. The wife kept goading me into giving Safari a second chance, and I've been incredibly pleased with it. -
Yes, but only because my Harman Kardon is a little over a decade old and didn't come with HDMI inputs (so I have all my HDMI inputs running into the tv, which in turn runs a single optical out to my HK). But Apple TV does have an optical out that I could run to the HK. Just don't care to bother. But, if you don't have an iPAD you'd have to have it plugged into your television so you could see the menu. There is a remote control app for the iPad which lets you completely control Apple TV through it.

YES!!!! My bad. Definitely try that first. Thanks, mjzee! I guess I had made the assumption that he had already tried that... -

Son-of, one thing I've noticed about the iPad is that it tends to have that time honored Wind'ohs disease of getting a little bonkers on you after it hasn't been properly nurtured for a period of time. My suggestion: back it up, then restore it from your backup. Kind of a pain in the ass, but I've found it does the trick far more often than not. I haven't experienced the problem you've described, but have experienced many things similar to it. -
Hear you loud and clear, brother. I've been on a MAJOR minimalist kick for a couple of years now. Whoever invented the HDMI cable should have their own private wing in heaven! But, in all honesty you're only talking one more cable (HDMI) for Apple TV. It works out perfectly for me because I have a pretty decent amount of my cd collection (and all my digital music, which is all I've purchased in the last two years) on my iMac, so I can simply use Home Sharing on Apple TV to play them through my main system. But, it sounds to me like you're wanting to make this your main system? If so, good luck and let us know what you decide and how it turns out. Who knows? You may even drag me down that path with you. Though I can't imagine ditching my surround sound receiver...

Why not save yourself $1400 bucks and get an Apple tv and hook it into your main system?

i'm sorry Chris, but this post of yours resonates with "deja-vu-ishness"!!!! c'mon, already. you seem to be getting more "sensitive" with each passing day. I actually understand what he's saying. Back in the day he, Johnny E, and myself used to have all out battle royales in the political forums. A forum that explicitly states a heat/kitchen warning, AND one that Jim can block for you by request. Now, simply pointing out obvious hypocrisy can cause your post to be deleted. But, it was recently explained to me that things got really, really bad here not too long ago. Even went as far as physical threats being made (a la SinginSumo and Chris many moons ago). With that explanation in mind it makes a lot more sense that this board would be locked down as tightly as it is now. But for some, it simply isn't their cup of tea. And to Chris' credit, when Lois removed his entire account from JC, he never came back (with the exception of a single post to offer his condolences for the death of SinginSumo). -

And THAT was the voice I was waiting to hear from. And I agree, nothing SHOULD happen to this thread. -

Same old same. Just with a little less time for posting on these boards (which gives me a little more time to listen to music, and foment revolution). Oh, and I think I'm still recovering from my hangover from our last meeting. Things got...what would you say...a little bit out of hand that night. DBA's is no place to start drinking at noon. As for the revolution, please send me dates and times! Glad to hear you are doing well, and wish you'd pop out of the woodwork more often. Are you on FB at all?
