Baseless? Doesn't have to be. You look at the rosters in the spring, the new additions, the players who parted, young players who are looking to break out, older ones who may break down. One often can end up looking foolish as things in real life often follow a different course than how things look on paper, but...I don't even know why I'm bothering to reply.

What, they're afraid of missing a shot of ole stone face shedding a tear? We've seen that before, go bug Britney. I see AZ vs. CO has the same break. I don't like this at all. I hope it's a bright sunny day on the off day between 4 & 5 and it rains buckets on game 5 in both series, just to get rid of this idiocy of scheduling. It's almost as bad as calling a timeout at the last second while the kicker is kicking in the NFL this year. If your top guys can't handle pitching on 3 days rest to hell with 'em.

The Costello set (short as it is) is over on Dimeadozen.

Hasn't happened in the 12 years of having divisional playoffs. Nor has there been 3 teams sweeping. Hell yeah Jamie Moyer! He's got a great playoff record in his 5 starts, 3-1 with an ERA of 2.43 after tonight. Smashing the myth that the soft tossers can't pitch well in the playoffs. Or maybe it's only the softest who can do well. :-) Whew, another tense one tonight! Sometimes sweeps have better games than series that go the distance.

One thing to keep in mind is Pettitte isn't a normal lefty. Lifetime lefties hitters have hit for a higher average off him than righties by 10 points. Some of the brighter managers know this and sometimes don't use their normal platoons. Pettitte pitched a good game at Cleveland last August for what it's worth. That said, who knows how he'll come out today, as those Indians were mighty impressive yesterday. Kenny Lofton played like Rocky Colovtio.

Worked a couple of days ago for me. Thanks btw, as I didn't get the email.

It's not done often, but it can make sense. PR for Tek (and Cora could be used) but then be able PH for catcher #2 in the later innings if needed. And often it is needed, especially if the PR for Tek didn't score earlier. Who are the better bench options?

What, in your mind, is a "cover"?
Quincy replied to Christiern's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The original meaning has been decimated. Not unlike decimate. -
Where's the emoticon that has something lodged in its throat? When CBS ran the story about Bonds not being asked back for next season they phrased it like he had been dropped that day (whenever that was, about 2 weeks ago.) They next reported that he could possibly end up in Baltimore or Seattle. I wrote it off as sloppy speculation. But I suppose if Vidro is your DH, there will be rumors like this.

Wow! Tough going there Matthew, but what a game. The expanded rosters meant all sorts of fringe players were playing in crucial situations that you wouldn't see in a regular playoff game. Poor Hoffman, it's been a rough couple of days on future hall of fame pitchers, and he blew one on Saturday too. The career numbers looked favorable vs. Holliday & Hawpe, though Helton has owned him. But with Hawpe on deck having been so dominant of late was a scary sight, yet it was Carroll who got the sacrifice. What a game.

Burns' THE WAR gets drubbed in the New Yorker
Quincy replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
A demotion! I didn't catch last night's episode, and I hate to defend Burns, but as the US doesn't use "field marshall" maybe he chose to use "general" just to translate to Americans that Monty was a big cheese. Or Burns was just being sloppy, take your pick. -
Some manager & coaching trivia(l) ties coming up in the NL. 1) The one game playoff features managers who had their best playing years with the Royals with the Padres' Bud Black vs. the Rockies' Clint Hurdle. Closest the Royals have come to the playoffs in a long time. 2) A pair of Tiger greats, former teammates at that are opposing bench coaches. Kirk Gibson is the Diamondbacks' bench coach, meanwhile Alan Trammell is Pinella's with the Cubs.

Not quite. Congrats on your team's 10,000th loss and one of the great comebacks!

He's been a shell of himself since the All-Star break, in fact a bit before. Guess the 'roids wore off by June. The Angels might be better off if he is injured so they wouldn't play him. While they'd miss the ability to PH/PR the with extra outfielder, at this stage I'd rather go with Willits and Rivera, or throw Figgins out there and play Izturis at 3B.

I have that Dolphy DVD, which I bought mainly for the Mingus half, so I hesitated to buy the Jazz Icons Mingus - but did it anyway. The new Mingus has much better video and audio than the earlier version. Plus, having the other two concerts on there makes it essential, IMO. You won't find any better Mingus on video anywhere - so far, anyway. I suspected as much. I face the same problem with the Monk from the first series thanks to the Live At The Olympia bonus DVD, and I recall someone saying the Jazz Icons is also better quality. I'll be getting more from 1 & 2, and am starting to imagine what they may do next.

I love how the Dexter begins. A man walks into a bar... The Coltrane, Ellington and Brubeck are terrific too (especially the first 2.) Were it not for having about 1/2 the Mingus on a Dolphy dvd I would have grabbed that (and I still might someday.) Top notch indeed, and as budget permits I plan on getting more.

I always thought it silly, but 6ish years ago on the day that issue arrived about the jinx with a black cat on the cover was the day my cat died. Face it, your team has had it!

Boy I'll say, and I didn't get either one of the above emailed to me so thank ya both very much. I'll use the 40% tomorrow, unless the "void if transferred" part causes the coupon police to lock me up. Picked up a Talking Heads DualDisc (1st time trying a Dual and it appears to work fine), a PentaTone SACD and an overpriced-before-coupon Coltrane (Crescent - not many more left to get of his) digi-pack all for $9.99 each. Yes siree! Now that I know my player likes DualDiscs okay I'll use the 40% tomorrow on another.

The title is The Complete Blue Note Blue Mitchell Sessions (1963-1967). So it's complete within that date range, however it omits Collision In Black & Bantu Village which came out afterwards. Edited to add I threw in the Teagarden set when I ordered the Venuti/Lang.

better get rid of those 'organ' plates
Quincy replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I thought it was weird when I started hearing DINK used that way (double/dual income no kids) while it was still a too common slur. I mean it just as easily could have been TINK (two incomes, etc.) Of course that would have caused problems once the Telletubbies incident came around. One isn't allowed to have WINE or VINO on a vanity plate here either, which is stupid beyond belief considering we're a wine state. The state drink is milk too, which is a disgrace given all of the fine beer we brew too. Hypersensitivity R Us. -
I hear that sometimes happens after one has a fatigued groin earlier in the year.

This is close. I'm guessing you handle the wild card tie-breaker first. Scenario #8 "Scenario #8: There is a three-way tie for highest winning percentage among Division winners and a tiebreaker is required to determine home field advantage in the Division Series. The tied Club that has a better record against both of the other Division champions during the championship season will be deemed to have the higher winning percentage. The tie between the two remaining Clubs shall be broken as follows: The first tiebreaker will be head-to-head competition between the two Clubs during the championship season. If the Clubs remain tied, then the tied Club with the higher winning percentage in intradivision games during the championship season. If the Clubs remain tied, then the tied Club with the higher winning percentage in intraleague games during the championship season. If the Clubs remain tied, then the tied Club with the higher winning percentage in the last half of intraleague games during the championship season. If the Clubs remain tied, then the tied Club with the higher winning percentage in the last half plus one of intraleague games during the championship season. This process will be followed game-by-game until the tie is broken. If none of the three tied Clubs has a better record against both of the other Division champions during the championship season, then the Club deemed to have the higher winning percentage shall be: The tied Club with the higher winning percentage in head-to-head competition among the tied Clubs during the championship season. This process will be followed game-by-game until the tie is broken." Whew! Relatedly, a couple of weeks ago there were coin flips for all of the different combinations of wild card tie-breaker games and such. Seattle in the midst of their horrid losing streak on the field was involved in 12 different coin flips. They lost 11 of them. For that article click here.

Yup, it's enough to nudge me to finally get the Venuti-Lang that I've been meaning to get for many months. And yes, I know of a site where I could save $20 and order it from there. I don't normally pass on a chance to save a Jackson, but aside from supporting the great work Mosaic does they also have a ridiculous old fashioned sense of customer service. So while I'm not confident that if something wasn't right with the box from the discounter, I'm confident that Mosaic would take care of any problem (not that I'm expecting one.) Mosaic has had competition from other artists and genres for me lately, but free postage is better than nothing and they succeeded in getting my attention. Or rather the thread-starting poster got my attention!

Agreed. I carry the small version of the Rewards card on my keychain, so it's always handy when I need to present it. I've also used the same coupon more than once without any problems, but perhaps they're starting to crack down on that. I used the 40% off coupon plus $5 in Borders Bucks I'd accrued to pick up the first Jazz Icons box set yesterday for about $20 cheaper than I could've gotten it for online. Granted, that's an unusual occurrence, but you can come pretty close to equaling online prices if you use the 25% and 30% off coupons. I rarely bother with the 20% off ones anymore unless I use one to pick up a single CD. I agree with both of the above. You're right about all of this. After years of not wanting to be in another database I came to the conclusion that I might as well join the Borders Rewards program. So what if they know the occasional book/cd/dvd I buy (since I don't buy that many from the brick & mortar anyway.) But the couple of times where I was ready to they didn't ask at checkout, so I didn't bother. They took my coupon I printed out from this organissimo thread, and it felt kind of racy to get the reward without the commitment ya know. Now that the coupon police came out I have my card. Checkout is less exciting now.
