Good call -- The Shape of Jazz to Come, Turn of the Century, This Is Our Music would be the three to start with Strangley enough these were the first 3 I started with. I owned Shape for at least a year, played it 1/2 a dozen times and didn't get it. Like the origianl poster, I wasn't going to give up. This Is Our Music had just entered the CD market (outside of the box) so I tried it. There were some brief moments where I thought it might be clicking, but not really. But I'd put it on every month or so anyway. Came across a used Turn Of The Century and figured I might as well invest another $7 in this mystery. BAM! Not sure if it was the playing of the other 2 over a period of time that laid the ground work for "getting it" & loving it with Turn Of The Century, or if it was finally hearing the right entry point. I suspect some it is due to the lead song "Ramblin.'" Some things take time. Sometimes time doesn't help. Keep trying till you're sure.

had a good burger lately?

I'm tempted to get the grinder attachment for the Kitchen Aid mixer. Anyone have one and do they work well? Kitchen Aid mixers have great motors, so I'd think it'd work fine, but thought I'd ask just in case. -
Very believable. Woo-hoo, I feel like I've just placed a win-place-show bet on the Belmont! (Now watch Wang or Hughes muss it up.) Though the neck cramp crack is funny, I'm going with the good ole groin as the most likely Clemens injury. (Not that your specific injury picks were in order.) Gee, this is almost like entering a "death pool."
-
Heck, the way things are going for them it's more like who won't get injured. I'll pick Pettitte to go next, followed by Clemens, then Moose. And I think they're due for another Saturday afternoon injury too. Check the Fox schedule.

I was there a couple of times 20+ years ago. Yes, very very good, well worth visiting when in the LA area. Went there an extra time rather than try Fat Burger. I had chili fries on the 2nd visit. But I wouldn't call it the best, mainly because I could not pick just one. I do like 'em fat, grilled & rare too. I've heard that neck meat makes the best burgers. I once had a burger that was partially from neck meat (hand ground) when I shared a camping spot in Canyonlands. It was very good, but I had hiked 16 miles that day, so a grilled lizard would have been tasty too. -
$&#@!, that's a hell of phone message to leave. I don't think VORP factors things like that into the equation. FWIW the M's-Rays game is on and B.J. Upton is playing CF. Dukes not in the lineup. Upton leads off with a HR.

The head scratcher for me concerning the Yankees is this is the 5th season without a fulltime studly 1st baseman. Sure Giambi sometimes plays there, but other than hot month of May Tino had a few years ago they haven't gotten much there. You'd think that'd be the easiest need to fill. I suppose instead they invested the dollars that could have gone there in Pavano. Then again the Mariners never did have a quality fulltime LF next to Griffey for those 11 years he played CF, and that's another seemingly easy position to fill. As Dan notes it likely won't be a problem next year if Damon moves over there and they pick up one of the FA CFs.

Out of 1st in the AL East or wildcard race? Winning the division doesn't matter. The Red Sox can play .700 ball all season, yet if the Yanks somehow are better than the 2nd best team in the Central (just guessing here) that's probably good enough to make the playoffs. And as we've seen for years, best regular season record doesn't mean a thing in the playoffs. Supposedly George realizes that the massive amount of injuries to the staff is a rash of rotten luck (and one who was a rotten signing. ) We sort of went thru this last year, speculating on the Yanks not making it during a rash of injuries (it's always a "rash" of injuries isn't it?), and they were able to buy their way out of trouble and improve their play. If Hughes comes back & lives up to promise, and Abreu ups his game, and _____ and _______ and ______ (lots of blanks to fill in), toss in cliches about it being a long season. That said it's not going to be easy, as Leyland's Tigers were no fluke, love those Indians, and Minnesota always seems to manage to be competitive. It's a mighty good & interesting season this year!

She's a walking candy apple! That episode had enough going on in it to make 3 shows.

Well, as one who hasn't been in a math class in too many years and wasn't that good begin with, I guess I meant the slope of deterioration of the entertainment value was seemingly not linear but more complex in it intensity, as it went from Phil Collins to Bette Midler to Kid Rock. Oh the pain & the agony! So that's my excuse for failing to provide the proper mathematical comparison.

That's what I paid yesterday. Just got $20 worth. Article in the paper about how the feds need to raise the gas tax for roads but are too chicken to do so. Pay less on gas, pay more in auto repairs from driving on damaged roads...

He could be hurt, but I wonder if it's just the nature of throwing the cutter. He may have lost the feel for the pitch, at least in April. If you're off just a touch on the pressure exerted by one of the fingers you lose movement, and that pitch is all about movement. As he's always been a fastball and cutter (I think he throws 2 different kinds) with nothing else maybe hitters are finally guessing better. The sample size is so freakin' small, but his May numbers are reasonably good. 2.57 ERA, WHIP of 1 in all of 7 innings. Yes, 2 HR in a month is a lot more than in the past, but he is 37 years old, and his past seasons were so lights out there's no way he could keep that up forever. As for yesterday's home run it's possible he may have been pitching freer with a 5 run lead. Better to allow a solo shot than walk a guy, or so says "the book." So my wishy-washer answer yes, decline phase and perhaps more, or perhaps not. I think the thing to watch for is how left-handed hitters do against him. When relievers decline usually the platoon-favored side (from the hitter's perspective) starts beating the crap against the pitcher. Remember when Jeff (sorry to bring him up Beri) Reardon became a mess? Hitters were hitting well over .300 against him in those final years. Same thing happened to Eck, at least at the end in Oakland & 1st year in STL. After saying this I should note that lifetime right handed hitters hit better than left vs. Mario so maybe my "what to watch for" should be flushed down the tidy bowl! Say, did anybody find last Saturday's Yankee's game to be deja vu all over again? Just 3 weeks earlier they had a pitcher break a leg on a lined shot back to the mound very early in the game. This time in the 1st the rookie breaks a hand on a lined shot. Even stranger is how I can't remember the starter's names, such has been the mess of the starting rotation this year.

That was a painful time for 2 reasons. 1) Year one of law & order manager Vern Rapp. He made Hrabosky shave off his Fu Manchu, the source of his strength. Simba had to cut his mane...well maybe that was a good thing. 2) The year before they traded Reggie Smith to the Dodgers for C Joe Ferguson straight up*. The thinking was (I suppose) that Joe would allow Simmons to play 1st and save his knees/extend his career, but it didn't work out that way. Reggie hit 32 HR for the Dodgers in '77, which means he probably could have hit at least 25 in Busch. 25 HR at Busch in '77 would almost feel like 40 HR today. Instead the Cards played Jose's brother Hector Cruz and Tony Scott. Oof! I actually defected to the Cubs over the Smith trade and Rapp's anti-hair leadership (I was a fan of Stabler's Raiders, so I didn't take to Rapp's clean cut hang up.) What I remember about most about Freed was how color announcer (and former 3b) Mike Shannon would talk when he'd come up. Shannon's main contribution when paired with Jay Randolph during the Brock years was to bet Jay "an ice-cold case of Busch beer" that Lou would take off on the next pitch. He did so in a deep gravelly voice which would slur as the game progressed. With Freed's season I remember him bringing up names like Dusty Rhodes & Smokey Burgess when he'd come up, who then I'd go Google...errrrr, I mean look up in my Baseball Encyclopedia. *Edited to note I was wrong about the trade being even up. The Cards also got Bob Detherage, who hit .308 & slugged .500 lifetime. That lifetime was 26 AB for the Royals in 1980. Minor leaguer Fred Tisdale also was part of the deal, and in the minors he stayed. Detherage & Ferguson were shipped the following year to the Astros for Larry Dierker & Jerry Da Vanon. Jerry was cut in May after going 0 for 8 and poor Larry Dierker left his arm in Houston. Whole lotta nothin' for Reggie Smith, who played on 3 Dodger pennant winning teams.

Yeah, my "huh?" can be changed to a "yes." Aside from some composer names being tricky to spell "song" titles tend to be "Symphony No. 2" and such, which make classical different from the other musics. Being able to search within a forum might be easier. Of course moving past classical threads takes some work, but maybe someone can collect the links for Jim.
-
He's on Harold Land's The Fox too...What a legacy.
-
Oooooooo, that's a great point that I hadn't thought of. There are some mighty long semi-tricky names to spell in classical, especially if you're a newbie.

It's a very productive .228 though... Folks, that's 21 homers, 61 RBIs for a little more than half a season. The swing change you describe doesn't sound good though. Hey, if he ends up in Fenway he can change stances faster than you can say Yastrzemski.

I rounds off the edges on some buttons that appear as squares & rectangles in Firefox. Honestly, that's the main reason why I use it instead of Firefox. Mr. Superficial, that's me. There was a time when Safari & this board didn't seem to get along, though I imagine that passed quite some time ago. Also had problems with Java apps & Safari, so I added both Firefox & Camino. I use Firefox for Zillow and a few other sites that don't seem to be Camino friendly. If I recall right, Safari hired away a bunch of programmers away from Camino way back when (when Camino was went by another name.) -
Um, I think you mean Memorial Day perhaps. Good luck, and I hope you're an organ donor.

Mine went out of whack for the same reason that Dan mentions above - using Google to search for something on the o. Camino 10.3.9 btw. -
I totally agree. I agree too. I understand that this is predominantly a jazz board, so it makes sense to have a "Misc. Music" forum to discuss anything other than jazz, but I hate to ghettoize other music genres beyond that. I'm easy, I can either way, but I lean towards RDK's view. I will say over the past year I've been buying & listening to more classical music, even craving it on some days. So thanks to y'all for the threads & recs.

Given the amazing things you find in that closet of yours, there just might be an extra shoe that matches the style of the "3rd" shoe. Welcome back, we missed ya!

Given all the bumps & bruises, never mind the shorter livespan an NFL player has, it really is damn stupid they test for pot. Let him be. -
Another for AVG. Used to use Norton & McAfee. AVG makes for a happier computer plus it's free.

Maybe Dirk will be so traumatized he'll decide to be more like Mike; give up basketball and try to make the Rangers as oh, how about a starting pitcher. I apologize Al, that was just mean. For what's it's worth if Teix & Young revert to their respective means you'll be scoring more at least. Then there's just the usual problem of trying to prevent runs...
